Chapter Seventy-Two: The Other Side of Hogwarts
No one knows why Salazar Slytherin had the whimsical idea to dig such a space out of the castle's beneath the ground.
Perhaps he built the Chamber of Secrets in the first place just to have a place, an unknown place, where he could teach his students some of the other three founders' objections to open spells or research.
- Because the course on teaching black magic was strongly opposed by the other three founders from the very beginning of the school's establishment, so that it could not be realized.
However, as the furnishings of the Chamber of Secrets implied, when Slytherin completed the Chamber of Secrets, he felt strongly that he had an unrivalled position in the school.
For none of the other three founders ever left a colossal statue of their own, nor did any decorate the college with a coat of arms (snakes) that symbolized their personal strength.
They like to make their presence feel in more subtle ways, such as the Ravenclaw Library, Hufflepuff's kitchens and recipes, and Gryffindor's Broken Hat.
Rather than emulating the French, what they thought best represented the "French spirit" was presented in Paris in metal in the crudest way imaginable.
Gawain and Snape walked into Slytherin's mouth like two Beans of Bibi Duo. He can only hope that he is the more delicious one.
Through the fluorescence on the tip of the wand, he could see that it was actually a very spacious passage. There was a lot of strange slime on the floor, on the walls, and sometimes some broken scales, which shimmered slightly.
This reminded Gawain of the basilisk.
The passage wasn't very long, it was a steep slope that had been going down, but in two or three minutes Gawain and Snape had come to an end.
But their faces were all very ugly.
- In front of them was an intricate system of masonry pipes, with many entrances intertwined, undoubtedly leading to the upper level of the castle.
There is only one difference.
It is the thickest and is located in the middle.
At the entrance to the passage, a tattered bronze plaque stood, a large area of cyan that had been corroded by the water vapor, and only the letters on it could be distinguished.
βlaguγ β
That is the meaning of the lake.
"We need Professor Dumbledore to come over, now, immediately. β
Snape gasped.
Because it only means one thing.
- The rearview mirror has run out of the castle. And right under their noses, there are countless secret doors or mechanisms.
Gawain had no doubt that Quirrell had entered the chamber through a passage in the bathroom on the fourth floor, and that he had left the door open...
"All the secret passages in the castle that lead to Hogsmeade are no longer safe. β
A thought crossed Gawain's mind.
According to Hogwarts: A History of the School, Hogwarts was once a castle for Muggle nobles. It was built thousands of years ago, that is, after the Romans founded Britain.
Gawain remembers that when he went to the museum, the tour guide introduced that in 43 years, after the Roman Emperor Claudius I conquered Britain, he turned it into an imperial province.
Britannia.
The Romans brought here, in addition to the beaten Ares with a full head, as well as their superb water supply and drainage technology. These drainage pipes, even after a thousand years, are still in basically good condition.
And after the previous castle renovations, most of these drainage pipes are now deserted, and there is no longer any water flowing through. This also means that even people can walk freely in it.
"It's no wonder that Quirrell is sometimes completely nowhere to be found on the Spot map... It's a map, but it never shows a map of the sewers..."
Gawain suddenly remembered that when he had borrowed the map to find Riddle, he would sometimes not be able to find Quirrell's location at all.
It was as if he had suddenly become invisible.
Snape summoned the Patronus, and it flew back the way it came, and it wasn't long before Professor Dumbledore, who was grabbing Fawkes's tail.
"Severus, thank you. β
The white wizard's expression was equally serious and terrifying, and on his usually neat white wizard robes, there were faint marks of a large stain of black tea.
"Filius and Minerva are coming, and I hope you will help them, to find out and seal the ends of these passages, and not to miss any of them.
Pomona is receiving Lucius and asking Argus to accompany him for a while? I'm sure they will have a common language on certain topics. β
Dumbledore looked at Snape, who nodded dryly and was about to turn away.
"Professor, please wait a minute!"
Gawain thought about it, mixed the remaining saltpeter into black powder, and handed it to him in a large bag.
"You know how to use it, you just have to be careful. β
As soon as Snape took the bag, Gawain hid behind Dumbledore so that he wouldn't be stabbed to death with his vicious eyes.
Snape turned around without saying a word.
He was afraid that he would not be able to restrain himself, so he wanted to turn back and put a curse on Gawain, or deduct all of Gryffindor's house points.
"Gawain, let's go for a walk by the lake together?"
Dumbledore looked at Gawain and said with a smile but no smile. He thought more than Gawain, especially after learning the last name "Gaunt".
"Why not, Professor?"
Gawain shrugged and followed Dumbledore.
They made their way up the stone steps of the passage.
In the middle of the passage, the bottom of the groove used to drain the water was deposited with a large number of broken bones, among which there were many more bones like fish, cats, and even larger.
"I think it should be a deer. β
Seeming to notice Gawain's gaze, Professor Dumbledore explained. Phoenix Fox flies to the front, leading the way for them.
The passage is long.
The further back you go, the heavier the moisture in the air.
At the end, there is a wide wall made of blue brick, with a low, arched inlet that connects to the deep underground river.
There is a whole bronze wall carved with two intertwined serpents guarding a heavy door.
"Gawain, did you see that?"
Dumbledore said suddenly.
But Gawain understood what he meant.
"See, Professor. β
Gawain was able to "see" two particularly "bright" places, one on the wall and the other at the door.
A snake eye on the door, to be exact.
"Of course, how could you not see that?"
Dumbledore walked straight to the color on the wall and groped with his right hand, "Huh?", he smiled suddenly, and made a motion to spin the handle.
There was a tooth-aching clattering sound, and the bronze on the wall suddenly split into many small pieces and reassembled into a large gate.
"Well, it looks like the secret door he left behind, maybe for people like us. β
Dumbledore looked up at the door and saw a tall ladder. But even if he didn't go out, he guessed where the ladder would lead.
- A small pier by the Black Lake.
It is said to be the starting point for the Big Four to reach Hogwarts by boat across the Black Lake.
