Chapter 535 Yan Cong, who took advantage of the situation

One day he told the people in the mountains, "There is great knowledge of goodness that is about to come to the rooftop." We should grow beans to make sauce and chop reeds to make mats to meet him. ”

After Zhiyi arrived at Tiantai Mountain, he met Dingguang and saluted each other. Dingguang said: "Do you remember when I greeted each other on the mountain two years ago?"

Zhiyi was amazed to know that it was Dingguang who met him in his dream.

At this moment, the people heard a bell ringing in the valley, and Dingguang said, "The bell means that you have a relationship with this mountain and can live here." When the country is peaceful and the four directions are unified, there will definitely be nobles who will build temples for Zen masters, and then there will be a mountain full of halls.

The crowd didn't believe him.

One night, Zhiyi went to the top of the mountain alone to sit in meditation.

When I was in meditation, a sudden wind suddenly rose, breaking trees and thundering. Then a band of demons came up and breathed fire at him.

Zhiyi kept quiet, and after a while, this scene disappeared.

Then, Zhiyi felt physical and mental pain, as if he was being burned by fire.

And he saw his dead father and mother, resting on his knees, and telling of his sorrows.

Zhidun was determined to keep his mind, and immediately entered the wonderful land of the moon like water, quiet and peaceful.

At this time, a man of God descended from the western sky and praised his practice.

After Zhiyi lived in Tiantai Mountain, the Quartet Dao customs flocked to it.

Zhiyi then opened the lecture and taught everyone the method of meditation while lecturing the scriptures.

Yuan Zixiong, the county commander of Anle County, where Tiantai Mountain is located, believes in Buddhism.

Once, he was listening to Zhiyi's lecture with everyone, and after a while, he saw that there were three steps, descending from the sky, dozens of Tianzhu monks, extremely majestic, each monk holding an incense burner in his hand, around the master, three times.

Then they came forward one after another and bowed to the Master.

Yuan Zinan made a vow at that time to renovate the lecture hall for Zhiyi.

Immediately, funds were allocated from the government treasury to organize migrant workers to go up the mountain to renovate Zhiyi's lecture hall.

At this time, Zhiyi's reputation grew. Empress Chen sent envoys to the mountains several times to invite Zhiyi to Jinling to preach the Dharma, but Zhiyi refused.

In the end, Chen Houzhu asked Chen Bozhi, the king of Yongyang, who had a close relationship with Zhiyi, to persuade him, and Zhiyi agreed to go.

After Zhiyi entered Beijing, he was arranged in Lingyao Temple. Then, Empress Chen invited Zhiyi to the Taiji Hall and let him sit in a Chinese car driven by white sheep, a boy led the way, and the officials greeted him outside the hall and welcomed Zhiyan into the East Hall.

Empress Chen treated Zhiyi with the etiquette of a national teacher, and asked Zhiyi to ascend to the throne and give a lecture on "The Theory of Great Wisdom" for him and the ministers. At that time, the great masters of Beijing, such as Sangzheng, Huihui, Sandu, and Huikuang, who managed the affairs of monks across the country, were all at the chair.

They kept asking Zhiyi questions, and Zhiyi answered them freely.

After Zhiyi finished speaking, Empress Chen stood up from his seat, bowed and saluted, and the ministers also congratulated Zhiyi one after another.

For a time, Zhiyi was extremely glorious.

Soon, Emperor Wen of Sui led his troops to attack Jinling, the state of Chen was destroyed, and Zhiyi escaped from Jinling and went to Lushan, where he wanted to meditate and cultivate.

Emperor Wen of Sui believed in Buddhism, and after destroying Chen, he sent orders to various places and summoned great virtues to Chang'an to preach the Dharma.

Emperor Wen also sent an invitation to Zhiyi. Zhiyi didn't go.

At that time, Emperor Yang Guang of the Sui Dynasty was named the king of Jin and served as the governor of Yangzhou.

He sent many letters to Shu Zhiyi, asking him to go to Yangzhou to preach the Dharma, but Zhiyi still refused.

When Yang Guang invited him again, Zhiyi recommended a few virtuous monks for him, but he still didn't go. Yang Guang sent another letter to Zhiyi: "The disciple inherits the virtues of his ancestors, so he can be born in the royal family." I am not willing to walk on the rugged paths of the world, but want to swim in the ocean of Mahayana Buddhism. I am a firm believer in the Dharma and would love to receive your wise teachings. The Zen master is knowledgeable in Buddhism, strict in his precepts, and high in meditation, so he is famous far and wide, and is appreciated by all the disciples, so the disciples ask you to ask you to set up a thousand monks in the Jincheng Hall in the 11th year of the emperor's reign, so as to open up the people and make them believe in the Dharma. I am looking forward to the arrival of the Zen master. ”

After receiving this letter, Zhiyi made an appointment with Yang Guang.

1. Don't have high expectations of the Dharma;

2. The etiquette and rules of all the laity, wisdom can not be observed;

3. Freedom to come and go;

Fourth, if you want to go back to the mountain, go back to the mountain.

Yang Guang agreed one by one, and Zhiyi then set off to Yangzhou.

After Zhiyi arrived in Yangzhou, he presided over the Thousand Monks Dharma held by Yang Guang for him.

At the festival, Yang Guang gave Zhiyi the title of "Wise Man".

Zhiyi gave Yang Guang the precepts and gave him the Dharma name "Zongzhi".

The following year, Zhiyi returned to his hometown of Jingzhou and built the Yuquan Temple in Dangyang.

When Zhiyi returned to his hometown, he was caught up in the local drought.

The crops were about to dry up, and the ground was cracked.

Zhiyi vows to eradicate disasters for his hometown.

Zhiyi climbed to the top of the mountain and sat quietly.

After a while, the sky was overcast, and then heavy rain poured down until the ravines were full.

Wang Ji, the governor of Jingzhou, heard that Zhiyi had returned, so he went to meet him.

At that time, Zhiyi was sitting on the throne with a serious expression and no anger and self-authority.

When Wang Ji saw it, he felt trembling all over his body, and sweat was raining.

Wang Ji later said to people: "I have been on the battlefield for a long time, and I will not be afraid of any danger I encounter. I don't know how to see Master Zhiyi, it would be so terrifying. The master is really a man of God. ”

In the seventeenth year of Emperor Wen of Sui, Zhiyi returned to Yangzhou.

In the spring of this year, Zhiyi led his disciples back to Tiantai Mountain, where they had been absent for a long time.

On Tiantai Mountain, the scenery is still the same, but the temple where I lived in the past has become dilapidated, the walls are covered with dust nets, and the courtyard is full of wild grass.

Zhiyi is quite emotional about this, and the impermanence of life and the changeability of the world are more profound.

This feeling made him feel even more urgent about spreading the Dharma and spreading the Dharma.

While renovating the temple, Zhiyi was working on the establishment of the Tendai sect.

At that time, the Sui Dynasty had unified the world, and the integration of Buddhism between the north and the south had a political guarantee.

Through the study of different schools of thought, Zhiyi is engaged in the establishment of sects based on the teachings of the Lotus Sutra.

When Zhiyi first went to the rooftop, he saw that the common people on the beach were engaged in fishing, so he persuaded the local fishermen to give up killing and change to farming.

When the reconstruction of the temple was about to be completed, I saw auspicious clouds in the sky, and yellow finches flew together, chirping non-stop.

When the monks went out to watch, Zhiyi said to everyone, "These are all after the people gave up killing, the saved fish turned into yellow finches and came to thank them." ”

For a few days later, Zhiyi sat alone on the top of the mountain.

Once, he saw a strong wind suddenly rising, blowing away the pagoda on the mountain, and he saw his master Hui Si, riding the wind, to send him to a place where he was destined.

Zhiyi remembered that when he was a child, he often dreamed of dying on Tiantai Mountain.

Zhiyi knew that he would die soon.

Soon after, Zhiyi fell ill.

In winter, Yang Guang sent people into the mountains to invite Zhiyi.

At the same time, it brought a generous gift. Zhiyi decided to go.

Before leaving, Zhiyi drew a pattern of the temple and asked the disciples to choose the address and build the temple according to this pattern.

The disciples saw the temple painted in the drawing, the hall was towering, and the houses were hundreds, and it was majestic and magnificent. Puzzled in his heart, he asked Zhiyi: "We can't afford to build this auspicious temple, right?"

Zhiyi said: "This matter is borne by the Wang family. ”

Zhiyi took the sick and went on the road, and when he walked to Ximen Stone City, he was seriously ill and could not walk. On the sickbed, Zhiyi wrote to Yang Guang and said: "Because of the king's summons, I know that I will die soon, and in order to show my heart, I came here regardless of my serious illness. At this point, my life is about to rest, and my heart has arrived, and I will not go anymore. ”

Zhiyi asked his disciples to hand over his mantle and props to the monastery in part in front of the Maitreya Buddha and in part.

Then, the master sat down in front of the Buddha statue, stopped taking the medicine, and recited the names of Amitabha Buddha and Avalokiteshvara.

On the twenty-fourth day of November in the seventeenth year of Emperor Kaihuang of Sui, Zhiyi sat down.

In the second year, Yang Guang, the king of Jin, built a temple at the southern foot of Tiantai Mountain.

After Yang Guang ascended the throne, the temple was given the "Guoqing Temple", which means "the temple is established in the country." ”

After Zhiyi's death, his body was returned to the rooftop.

Later generations built a tower on the Buddha ridge of Tiantai Mountain, among which there is a hexagonal body tower of Zhiyi.

This pagoda is still in the Zhenjue Temple of Tiantai Mountain today.

The Tiantai sect, founded by Zhiyi, was the first formal Buddhist sect in the history of Chinese Buddhism, and its influence lasted for thousands of years, and spread beyond national borders to Japan.

An Xiaoyu listened to my little monk's narration and said, "Zhiyi is indeed a generation of monks. ”

The little monk said: "The second monk I admire is Master Yancong, who took advantage of the situation to spread the Tao. ”

Fourteen-year-old Yan Cong received a letter of invitation from Jing Changyu, Chao Xiu, Lu Sidao, Yuan Xinggong, and Xing Shu, who were important ministers of the Northern Qi Dynasty, asking the young Yan Cong to give a lecture on great wisdom for the establishment of the Northern Qi Dynasty. This was a rumor at the time.

Yan Cong is indeed a Buddhist genius. When Yan Cong was not a monk, he was smart and perceptive.

Later, he defected to Master Bian, when he was not yet ten years old.

Venerable Bian was very puzzled by the child, thinking that he had come to the monastery to play, and had no intention of saying something that even he did not understand.

But Master Bian looked at Yan Cong's childish face again, his expression was serious and sincere, and the mage was slightly moved.

Venerable Bian tried to get Yan Cong to read the Sutra, which was nearly 7,000 words, and he finished reading it in one day.

and asked him to read the Dafang Sutra, and Yan Cong only took a few days to finish it.

Master Bian discussed with him the scriptures he had read, and Yan Cong answered them fluently.

Master Bian was shocked by the young man. You must know that the Dafang Sutra is the general name of the Mahayana Buddhist Sutra, and it is a miracle that Yan Cong was able to read such a vast number of scriptures in a few days at such a young age.

When he was ten years old, Master Bian made Yancong officially become a monk and named Daojiang.

This is to hope that his wisdom is endless, like a surging river.

Yan Cong gave a lecture on great wisdom in Jinyang, and Jing Changyu and other invitees came to listen to the lecture in person.

Yan Cong was quoted and talked freely, and the ministers listened to it as if they were drunk.

After listening, they praised Yan Cong: "What the Master said, we have never heard of. ”

Soon, the empress dowager of Qi arrived in Jinyang, and the emperor also came with her.

When they learned about Yan Cong, they asked Yan Cong to go to the Xuande Hall to preach the King of Benevolence Sutra.

On the day of the lecture, the Xuande Hall was crowded with people, the front part of the main hall was the queen mother and the emperor surrounded by palace maids and eunuchs, and then down, there were hundreds of civil and military officials, followed by 200 monks who came to listen to the lecture by order.

The entire hall was silent, and everyone was waiting for Yan Cong's arrival.

After a while, I saw a young man walking at the door of the main hall.

He was dressed in a clean robe, his head held high, and he steadily made his way through the crowd.

He was not tall, only reaching the chests of the speakers, but the solemn expression on his face made those present secretly admire.
