Chapter 552: Xuan Wan, the lawyer of the prosperous world
Tan Lun said: "If there are green onions, of course you can peel them. There are no green onions, so what else do you need to peel?"
The Master said, "This is a big root and a big stem, and I can't teach it." ”
From then on, the master did not dare to admonish him.
Everyone worships and worships the Buddha and recites the scriptures, but he does not participate, and he does not go out every day, and he cultivates his mind when he lives, sits and lies down, so as to realize his deep enlightenment.
When the family members in charge of the monk's belongings fed the dog with the porridge that the monk ate, Tan Lun said to him, "The dog has other food, so don't give the monk's porridge to the dog." ”
Because the family often does this, they don't listen to Tan Lun.
After the family feeds the dog with monk porridge, the dog spits out the porridge in front of the family.
Tan Lun was silent and told him again not to feed the dog with monk porridge, and the family ostensibly agreed.
Later, the dogs spit out the porridge in front of the monks, exposing the family's lies.
At this time, the monks and laymen were very respectful of Tan Lun.
There are well-educated people who come to argue with Tan Lun and ask questions.
Tan Lun sent the other party away as soon as he said it, and no one could stump him.
In the second year of Renshou, the Queen Mother died, repaired the meditation room, and summoned Tan Lun to the meditation room.
Tan Lun's behavior is still the same, and people at that time called Tan Lun Wolun.
There was a Zen master named Xingshan, who had a wide range of Zen studies, and thought that Tanlun Reclining Meditation was very strange, so he went to Tanlun Zen Room to debate right and wrong with him.
Tan Lun laughed and said, "Please feel free to ask." ”
So the two of them talked about the Dharma so much that they didn't sleep for three days and three nights.
Tan Lun talked about the Dharma of Prajna Ignorance, Empty Flowers, Lack of Dependence, Non-Establishment of Good and Evil, and Clarity of Nature.
Zen Master Xingshan admired the five bodies and threw himself to the ground, and praised Tan Lun's unhindered heart and thought, so that he could achieve the Tao in this way.
Tan Lun was in Beijing, and there were many people who invited him. But many of these people, unlike the Dharma, are obsessed with it.
Although Tan Lun used some clever methods to make them awaken, they all had their own opinions and were self-righteous, so it was still difficult for the teachings of the Dharma to be widely disseminated.
Lawyer Xuan Wan and Master Jing Lin led their disciples to listen to the Dharma.
There are so many people who listen to the Dharma, it is like the roe of a fish in the belly of a fish.
In the last years of Wude, Tan Lun fell ill in the solemn temple. The servant asked Tan Lun, "Where are you going?"
Tan Lun replied, "Go to the endless world." ”
So he was silent. Some monks touched him with their hands and felt very cold.
Quietly tell the others: "It's already knee-cold, and it's time for the earth, fire, water, and wind to separate, and life is coming to an end, and this is indeed the pain of life!"
But Tan Lun then said, "This suffering is also empty. ”
Someone asked him, "What kind of reincarnation is the reincarnation that he gave up?"
Tan Lun replied, "The four great battles of earth, fire, water, and wind in my body have reached my knees. When I died, I wrapped my body in weeds and threw it away, and I didn't do anything else. ”
He also said, "It's the fifth watch, why didn't the bell tell the time?"
Someone replied, "Vena will go and ring the bell in a moment." ”
When I looked at Tan Lun again, Tan Lun was already exhausted.
He was in his eighties.
The disciples and students followed Tan Lun's words and sent his body to Nanshan and threw it into the wilderness.
A layman surnamed Bao, when he was young, he hated mundane things and only loved zazen.
He will not marry a wife for the rest of his life, nor will he wear fancy clothes.
Listen to Tan Lun's teachings, adjust your heart and nourish your qi, be calm and peaceful, and follow Tan Lun's teachings for 50 years.
One day in the Zhenguan year, a grand ceremony was about to be held in the imperial palace of Chang'an City.
The main hall in the palace was crowded with people, but the atmosphere in the main hall was extremely solemn.
Among these people, there are princes in yellow robes, and princes wearing crowns.
Other people, but they usually don't show up, these people are dressed in gorgeous satin, with a phoenix crown on their heads, and they are all beautiful and fragrant, and they are dazzling from a distance.
No need to ask, these are the emperor's concubines.
These people under one man, above ten thousand, are now standing there reverently, waiting for the ceremony to begin.
It was not the emperor's enthronement ceremony, nor the crown prince's wedding.
It is an ordination ceremony, and the ordination is carried out by the crown prince, the princes, and the concubines of the six palaces.
The person who presided over the ordination was the great virtuous monk of the Tang Dynasty - Xuanwan.
Because Xuanwan kept the precepts firmly and subdued the four people, he was summoned by the emperor to take the ordination for the emperors.
Before Xuan Wan entered the Buddha Gate, he had some repentance for the Great Dao, and there were some precepts that he could naturally follow.
Once, the family sent Xuan Wan to live with a relative, and the relative killed a pig to entertain Xuan Wan.
But when they brought the stewed pork to the table, Xuan Wan felt fishy, and his internal organs were as uncomfortable as turning over the river and the sea.
Xuan Wan sat upright and said to his relatives solemnly: "All beings are equal, not only can they not kill people, but they also cannot kill everything that has life. Otherwise, you will inevitably go to hell in the future. Think ye of the good of the world to come. ”
The relatives brought down the pork and replaced it with a vegetarian diet, and Xuan Wan faced the West and repented with his palms together before eating.
When Xuan Wan reached the age of entering school, he went to Master Tan Yan to become a monk.
Master Tan Yan was a famous monk at that time, respected by Emperor Wen of Sui, Emperor Wen of Sui built a temple in Beijing, and personally invited Tan Yan to be the abbot.
After Xuanwan joined the school, he specialized in the collection of laws. First learn the ten recitations from Tanyan.
When learning this law, Xuan Wan used this law to check his words and deeds while learning, and when his words and deeds did not conform to the law, he must repent of his mistakes and ask the master to punish him.
One day, Xuan Wan was reading and reciting the scriptures in his hand.
Suddenly, he felt some itching on his face, so he unconsciously touched it with his hand, and unfortunately, it turned out that a mosquito flew to his face and was pinched to death by him.
Xuan Wan immediately put down the scriptures, knelt down and repented, and Xuan Wan reported the matter to the master and asked for punishment.
Tan Yan saw that he sincerely repented, and besides, he did it unintentionally, so he did not punish him.
Xuan Wan himself always felt uneasy in his heart, so he did not sleep at night and knelt in front of the Buddha statue to ask for forgiveness.
In the middle of the night, Xuan Wan felt that the main hall suddenly brightened, and the Buddha statue became a real Buddha.
The Big Buddha said to Xuan Wan peacefully: "You cherish life so much, you can be described as a true disciple of Buddhism. I am Maitreya Buddha, and I have accepted your repentance. ”
After saying that, the main hall was immediately restored to its original state.
Xuan Wan immediately felt happy and peaceful in his heart.
Since then, Xuanwan's discipline has become stricter.
After receiving full ordination, Xuan Wan followed lawyer Hong Zun to learn the four divisions.
He practiced carefully and studied carefully for three years, and his achievements were outstanding, and he was praised by everyone.
Leaving Hong Zun, Xuan Wan learned the law from Tan Qian.
He knew all the things in his heart, such as the Theory of Geography, the Theory of the Earth, the Middle Hundred, the Fahua, the Ranga, etc.
He focused on the connection between these sutras and the Vinaya in order to ensure that the words and deeds of the Vinaya bearers were completely lawful.
The present world belongs to the era of the Dharma and the end of the Dharma, so the monks are not strict in their discipline, and their behavior is often not in accordance with the precepts.
So Xuan Wan set up a dojo and practiced various confessions.
Every spring, before the ordination ceremony, Xuan Wan leads the monks to recite the trumpets of the 25 Buddhas and the mantra a thousand times.
Let these forbidden people repent of the past and believe in purity.
This form was later passed down for a long time.
In the early years of Zhenguan, Xuanwan received the Bodhisattva vows for the crown prince, kings and concubines of the six palaces at the behest of Taizong.
Then, Taizong issued a decree to let Xuanwan copy the existing scriptures for the queen in the Deye Temple in the Imperial Garden, and let Xuanwan supervise the creation of another scripture collection in the Yanxing Temple.
Xuanwan believes that he is entrusted by the Son of Heaven and can take this opportunity to promote Buddhism, so he must do his best.
But for both of these things, it is necessary to select the scriptures extensively.
However, since the Zhou Dynasty extinguished Buddhism and the Sui Dynasty revived, most of the Buddhist scriptures passed down from generation to generation were mixed in a mess, and there were many incomprehensible texts and sciences.
So Xuanwan united with many Shamen who were familiar with the scriptures and began to sort out the survey.
After several years of collation, the stored scriptures have a new look, the program is clear, and the order is logical.
In the history of Buddhism, there has been a collection of Buddhist scriptures, and the significance of Xuanwan's collation of scriptures is the same.
Lawyer Xuan Wan self-taught the festival of bitterness, and his virtue was famous for his prestige in the Vinaya.
His teachings became the norm for both monks and lay disciples.
From the princes and ministers to the subordinate officials, more than 3,000 people were ordained from Xuanwan, and more than 200,000 people were ordained under Xuanwan's influence.
The two Xiao Yu brothers, who are exemplary among people, have been bored with the world for a long time, and often ask Xuan Wan about the Buddhism of "Fahua".
The right servant shot Du Ruhui, and before he died, he entrusted Xuan Wan to be his mentor for the eternal calamity.
The wife and mother of the great general Xue Fangche both revered and kept the precepts, often consulted Xuanwan, and ate vegetarian food to the end.
Master Daoyue of Puguang Temple, with superb understanding and insight into the subtlety, after receiving the teachings of Xuanwan, he suddenly opened the Hui Mansion.
At that time, a shaman said, "Whenever the lawyer gives ordination, strange spirits and spirits come here from all over to listen to the teachings of the mage." If it weren't for the immeasurable merits, how could it be?"
Xuanwan sincerely admonishes and does everything. He wrote to the crown prince: "Since you established orthodoxy, you have been blessed with great blessings. You have been blessed by the Emperor to adapt to the flow of time, and what you do is very appropriate. I have been sick and suffering, and I am so moved that you have lowered your status to greet me. Unfortunately, I can't work for you. ”
"I have summarized the important requirements of the sutra and found that there are four things you can do according to them: First, you should be philanthropic. The purpose is to cultivate a loving mind and love for all.
Second, reduce killings. The teachings of benevolence and forgiveness in the Buddhist scriptures are to prohibit killing and torture. I heard that the East Palace has a daily meal, and there is cooking every day. If that's the case, it will do a lot of harm. Your Highness, you must set an example and regulate your ministers, so the civil and military officials and the common people have hopes and thoughts, hoping that you will worship the way of mercy and forgiveness. From now on, please kill less. In this way, life can be ensured, and the way of loving care will flourish.
Third, Shunqi. In the spring, all things breed, and all living beings should be nurtured to conform to the way of heaven. If there is a killing, it is not a good thing. Your Royal Highness, your residence is less sunny, the spring moon is blessed, and you are merciful to be in line with the nature of heaven. Maintain righteousness and give grace to you, in order to nurture the heavens.
Fourth, take the precepts. Every year in March, the six fasts cleanse a person's six roots, and in this way they receive the five blessings. I sincerely hope that you will follow this and fast and keep your vows. Now you can enjoy this important position, all thanks to the karma of past lives. As long as you can accumulate virtue and goodness, you can achieve its perfection.
I am incompetent and virtuous, but I am loved by you. I'm just dedicating some of my observations to you, and I'm going to let you see them for yourself. If you use it for self-inspection, you will be able to keep you blessed forever. ”
The crown prince immediately replied: "I am grateful to my teacher for teaching me the four wonderful methods. I read it carefully and repeatedly, and I have memorized it in my heart. Master, you have long left the tiredness of the world and wandered leisurely outside the world. Your wise words are profound. ”
