CHAPTER XXXVI
Trust is the hardest promise in the world to keep.
Caroline trusts Darcy's character and who he is, but she has never been able to hand over the secrets she has buried in her heart.
Darcy talks about his love for Caroline, but he stubbornly holds deep-seated notions that he can't understand and can't open his heart.
Being too greedy, wanting to get it without wanting to give, is not a fair equation.
"It looks like a gambler." Darcy said with some certainty.
They returned to the Bentley house and talked about Caroline's handbag, Darcy said that he wanted to buy another one for her, Caroline quickly shook her head and refused, saying that she had too many handbags to use, and she didn't need Mr. Darcy's gift at all.
Darcy didn't believe it, he clearly saw that Miss Caroline's handbag was the latest and most popular pattern in London, and he didn't lack the money, he just wanted to give Caroline these things as an apology.
So he was noncommittal, and if he really gave it away, Miss Caroline would not refuse.
And Caroline thought of the man who snatched his handbag, was he really a pauper? He looks like he drinks a lot, and although he is in rags, he is athletic, and he doesn't look like a person who can't afford to eat.
Darcy said, "Maybe it's a gambler, or how could he have just snatched your handbag?"
"And the gamblers?!" Caroline was a little surprised, "Isn't gambling forbidden for a long time?" β
If she remembers correctly, gambling was banned in the middle of the last century, why is there gambling now? No, why is there gambling in the ghetto? Where do they get the money to gamble?
"People's greed can never be stopped." Darcy said lightly, "Even if the ban is issued, there will still be people who will cross it, and no one can stand the temptation of money." β
Especially in such a money-first society, people's greed will only never end.
Moreover, although gambling was banned more than half a century ago, people did not really abide by anything, and soon, gambling in the underground appeared, at first it was men, and then it even developed into women, and when they were bored, they came out to gamble, which was simply beyond the control of the people above, and over time, it was regarded as invisible.
"There are also some gambling clubs on St James's Street in London's West End, which are only accessible to men." Darcy explained.
Caroline rolled her eyes, "Sir, have you been?" β
"......," Darcy was a little embarrassed, "once or twice, I've been there with friends, but I'm not into gambling, so I'm not very interested in that." β
Caroline made a knowing expression, picked up the dried apricots on the table, and ate them slowly, which Miss Sara had brought the other day, saying that they had been sent by the squires of the south.
"Speaking of gambling, sir, I think of Mr. Wickham."
As soon as the words fell, Darcy's body tensed, and Caroline pretended not to see, knowing that as soon as the name appeared, Mr. Darcy would become very strange.
"Why do you think of him, miss?"
Caroline chewed on the dried apricots and swallowed before she said, "I heard Miss Jane Bennett say that she had seen this gentleman gamble, but only once, and she did not think that this would be a hindrance between him and her sister. β
"Sister?"
Caroline laughed dryly, "Miss Elizabeth, it seems?" Or Miss Lydia? I don't really know......"
Darcy frowned fiercely, obviously dissatisfied with such a relationship, but he would not pay much attention to other people's lives, so he only said, "Miss, why are you still in contact with the Bennett family?" β
"Ah, that's right, that Miss Jane came to visit us in London last time, so we talked a little."
Darcy thought of the day in Meriton where they had helped him pick out a gift for Miss Caroline, and he was in a slightly better mood, and though he didn't let go of his prejudices, he couldn't help but say, "Miss Caroline, don't have too much contact with them." β
Caroline blinked, "Of course, I'm just a little interested, after all, who doesn't know that the Bennett family has many daughters?" Listening to their family's gossip is considered to be relaxing. β
Darcy endured it, but still pulled the corners of his mouth, "Don't you like to socialize?" β
"I just hate dancing." Caroline muttered, "It's not bad to listen to the ladies talk about life, and Margaret loves it." β
"Margaret?"
"Mr. Blair Davis's fiancΓ©e."
"He's a good candidate." Darcy commented pertinently, "In fact, social networking is essential. β
ββ¦β¦ It's still up to the people. "For example, if you give her a computer, she can connect the whole world.
"Miss." Darcy pondered for a moment, and finally spoke, "I thought about it for a long time, and decided to tell you about it, not to win your sympathy, but I always thought that if I wanted you to understand me, I must tell you about it." β
Caroline was taken aback by his solemn expression, she patted the residue of dried apricots on her palms, and sat up straight, as if she had been lectured by a teacher when she was a child, "Sir, you say." β
"It's about, Mr. George Wickham."
Caroline's heart tightened, and she looked up at the gentleman oppositeβshe couldn't tell, he had no expression on his face. So Caroline couldn't help but start to wonder why he told himself why he was at this time, why he adopted this way.
She remembered that Mr. Darcy in the TV series used a letter to tell Elizabeth, excluding the influence of the plot, and Caroline narcissistically believed that it was because Mr. Darcy believed that he could accept it, so he chose to speak out.
- She's not like Elizabeth Bennett after all, she's Caroline Bingley.
Elizabeth was sharp and bold, outspoken, sharp and dismissive, and Caroline completely downplayed these, and her image had always been approachable and mild, as if nothing could make her express her preferences directly.
There are advantages and disadvantages to this, there are not many advantages, her popularity has always been good, and the disadvantage is that for Darcy, he can't clearly know Miss Caroline's thoughts, so that there are a lot of misunderstandings between them, and they can't explain and clear them.
###
"Mr. Wickham's father is a man of respect." Darcy's gaze was a little dazed, obviously a reminiscence. "His father was the old steward of Pemberley Manor, and was very conscientious about our estate, and my father was very close to him, so he was always very fond of Mr. Wickham, and even provided for his schooling, and went to Cambridge to study. My father said that if he had the opportunity, he would be sure to put him into a church career, and even said that he would give him an inheritance of Β£1,000. β
Caroline handed the teacup in her hand to Darcy, as if listening to a story, Darcy was amused, he helplessly hugged the teacup and chuckled at Caroline, "Don't worry about me, miss, this is all in the past tense for me." - Continuing Mr. Wickham, he is a man full of vices, although I know that he has always kept them hidden, but the fake is the fake, and we can always find loopholes, especially for people of his age like me. After my father's death, Mr. Wickham wrote to me that he did not want to receive the priesthood, that he wanted direct financial benefit since he could not receive the benefits of that office, and that he would not be able to study law with a thousand pounds of property. I didn't want to say yes, but I really couldn't say no, so I gave him three thousand pounds, and he agreed that after receiving them, he would automatically renounce his access to the priesthood, which was considered an automatic renunciation of these rights, and we were cut in two. β
"Are you still in touch? Afterwards? Caroline knew who Wickham was, but to be honest, she really didn't know much about the things between the two, and she couldn't imagine how someone like Mr. Darcy could put up with a man like that.
And, she was really curious, why didn't a keen girl like Elizabeth find out who Wickham was, but stayed with him for so long?
"After that, we didn't talk for about three years." Darcy adjusted his posture, he was still holding the teacup, the coffee in it was already warm, "Wickham has always lived a prodigal life, I know he's in the city, but I don't want to contact him. Until one day, when the pastor of the church died, and the position was vacant, and Mr. Wickham could have taken over the position, he wrote to me and asked me to recommend him, and told me that he was in great distress at the moment. β
"Sir, did you recommend him?"
"Not really." Darcy said lightly, looking directly into Caroline's eyes, "Miss Caroline, if it were you, would you recommend him?" I know that all young ladies are a little soft-hearted. β
"No, it won't." Caroline grabbed the words, and blushed a little as soon as she finished speaking, she turned her head and snorted, "Sir, I am not a generous young lady, nor am I a philanthropist, I am so selfish and cautious, if it were me, I would definitely not recommend him, I also said, I don't think a liar will do noble things, his lies are not well-intentioned, he even slanders you behind your back." β
Darcy was stunned, he didn't expect Miss Caroline to say such a thing, he laughed, "You're right, Miss, I'm also a selfish person, and I'm also careful, and of course I won't recommend Mr. Wickham." - Miss, it seems that we are a perfect match. β
"Sir!" Oh my God, she couldn't believe that this gentleman would tease her! What about the honest gentleman who said he was good? How did she see the shadow of Baron Hall Playboy in him!
"I turned him down. He was angry. Darcy returned to the topic, "Whoever is like him, even if he gives him more money, will be squandered by him, and the more he does this, the more he hates me." As you can see, Miss, he scolded me behind my back, slandered my reputation, called me a villain, selfish, arrogant, ungrateful, and that's it. β
"None of us believe that, sir."
"That's why you're special, dear Miss Caroline."
Caroline's ears warmed and she whispered, "What else?" And after that? β
Darcy paused, hesitated for a moment before he said, "After that, there will be nothing more to do, but there is still a lot of unpleasantness between us, but I don't want to sue you, it will spoil your mood." β
Caroline nodded, and she took the cup out of Mr. Darcy's hand, "Will you get another one?" Coffee is delicious when it's hot and cold, but it's hard to drink like medicine when it's warm, and you won't like it. β
"Miss Caroline, thank you for your thoughtfulness."
He knew she knew, but she wouldn't ask.
She knew he knew she knew, but he wouldn't say it.
Caroline turned and went to the kitchen, Mr. Darcy was a good brother, and he would be a good father in the future.
