Chapter 450: Desert Development

Taoyuan Group has cultivated a sand-fixing grass and improved sea buckthorn, sand date, salix and so on.

Sand-fixing grass is a perennial plant, clumped, with slender and tough leaves, it is a good forage grass and a high-quality papermaking raw material.

This kind of grass not only grows fast, but also very drought and cold tolerant, their root system is developed, can grow to more than ten meters or even tens of meters, can not only absorb groundwater, fully store enough water when it rains, but also play a role in wind and sand fixation, absolutely suitable for growing in arid and waterless or desert areas.

Moreover, in consideration of the preservation of native species and to avoid ecological disasters, the seeds of sand-fixing grass have all been specially treated and will not reproduce indefinitely.

Seabuckthorn is a deciduous shrub or tree, which has survived on the earth for more than 200 million years, and it is a precious economic forest tree species with the highest ecological and environmental protection value in the development of the western region.

Sea buckthorn has strong adaptability to soil, and has the characteristics of drought tolerance, cold tolerance, extreme heat resistance, barren tolerance, wind and sand resistance and arid climate, which is the most plant.

It can survive in the harsh environment of deserts and alpine mountains, and it is also the only plant that can grow in the arsenic sandstone area, the "cancer of the earth".

Sea buckthorn fruit is spherical, 4-6 mm in diameter, orange-yellow or orange-red, is currently the world's largest variety of natural vitamins in the fruit, according to the determination, it contains a variety of vitamins, fatty acids, trace elements, linolein, sea buckthorn flavonoids, superoxide and other active substances and various amino acids required by the human body.

In addition to fresh food, it can also be processed into fruit juice, fruit wine, jam, preserved fruit, jelly, beverages, health products, etc.

Sea buckthorn is known as "Longevity Fruit", "Second Ginseng", "Life Energy", "Strange Tree Divine Fruit", "Holy Fruit" and "King of Vitamin C" by various countries.

Seabuckthorn leaves contain 15.75% crude protein, 9.48% crude fat, 14.04% crude fiber, and 54.84% nitrogen-free extract. Regular drinking is good for the body.

Sea buckthorn oil contains 206 active substances that are beneficial to the human body. Among them are 46 biologically active substances. Contains a large amount of vitamin E, vitamin A, flavonoids and SOD active ingredients, etc., with anti-fatigue, enhance body vitality and anti-cancer and other special pharmacological properties, can effectively prevent free radicals to achieve anti-aging effect.

Therefore, sea buckthorn is used as an important high-end cosmetic raw material by the beauty and cosmetics industries; It is widely used in the Chinese Medicine Epipoeia and the World Pharmacopoeia; It has been recognized by the Ministry of Health as a plant of homology for medicine and food.

Whether it is sea buckthorn oil or sea buckthorn flavonoids, they are hot goods in the international market and can be sold at a very high price.

Biotechnology-modified sea buckthorn is more drought-tolerant and can survive in all desert areas if properly managed. Yields are also higher.

After calculation, only 120-150 sea buckthorn trees need to be planted per mu of wasteland, and it can be closed into a forest in 4 years.

Jujube is the main tree species for forest protection and urban greening in the sandy and saline-alkali areas of Northwest China, and is often used as a street tree, which can be planted hedgerows, and can also be configured with small-leaved poplars and other tree species. It is tolerant to salinity, drought, cold and extensive management, and has become one of the preferred tree species for afforestation in Northwest China.

It is the main tree species for forest protection and urban greening in the sand famine and saline-alkali areas of Northwest China, also known as cinnamon willow.

Because the fragrance of flowering is similar to that of osmanthus, the vitality is very tenacious. Therefore, it has the reputation of "the osmanthus of the fragrant desert".

The leaves and fruits of Jujube are high-quality feed for sheep and contain nutrients needed by livestock. Jujube powder can also be used to make wine, vinegar, soy sauce, jam, etc. The dross can still be fed.

The flowers, fruits, branches and leaves of Jujube can be used as medicine, and the sap can be used to make Jujube gum, which is a substitute for Gum arabic.

Jujube is a good afforestation, greening, charcoal, windbreak, sand-fixing tree species, has a variety of economic uses, and has become one of the preferred tree species for afforestation in Northwest China.

The improved jujube is more suitable for desert arid areas and has more fruit.

Salix is a plant that is easy to reproduce, has strong germination and tillering power, rapid growth, dense branches and leaves, large root system, strong sand fixation and soil retention, and is extremely suitable for the desert environment.

It also has the characteristics of resistance to wind and sand, strong resistance to stress, resistance to drought, salinity, severe cold and heat.

Salix salix can be used as livestock feed, and its branches can be used to make paper or wood-based panels, and the utilization value is high, and it is one of the largest tree species in the deserted area of Xinhua China.

Only by making people feel that it is profitable to control desertification at the same time is a long-term solution, otherwise people will lose their enthusiasm after a long time.

Taoyuan Group then established the Desert Greening Development Co., Ltd., officially launching a huge desert greening transformation plan.

The total area of the world's deserts has also exceeded tens of millions of square kilometers, which is equivalent to the land area of the Rakshasa Kingdom; And about 5~70,000 square kilometers of land desertification every year, equivalent to the land area of Ireland.

At present, 110 countries around the world are facing the threat of land degradation, 1 billion people's lives are eroded by desertification, and in many areas, the inhabitants of entire lands are forced to leave their homes and become "ecological refugees", with economic losses caused by desertification and land degradation amounting to 42 billion US dollars per year.

Deserts have become an unavoidable problem for human development and survival.

The situation of Xinhua is not optimistic, two-thirds of the country's land is in the west, and one-third of the land in the west is desert.

The country's desert and desertified land area has reached 1.55 million square kilometers, accounting for 16 per cent of the country's land area, and 400 million people live in areas affected by desertification.

Due to the lack of basic farming conditions, the economic foundation of these places is extremely weak, and more than 60% of the poor counties are concentrated here.

In 1993, a particularly strong sandstorm occurred in Xinhuaguo, causing direct economic losses of 5.6 billion yuan. It covers an area of about 1.1 million square kilometers, involving 72 counties and banners in 18 prefectures and cities in the four northwestern provinces and regions, with a total of more than 12 million people.

In the catastrophe, 85 people were killed, 31 were missing, and 264 were injured. Hundreds of thousands of large and small livestock were killed or lost, hundreds of thousands of hectares of farmland, fruit and young forests were affected, and the infrastructure, power lines, roads and railways of pastures, pastures and salt farms were severely damaged.

What's even more powerful is that in the 30s of the 20th century, Lijian experienced a huge sandstorm, forming a huge moving dust belt with a length of 2,400 kilometers from east to west, a width of 1,500 kilometers from north to south, and a height of 3.2 kilometers, sweeping across the central and eastern regions.

The storm lasted for three days, swept over two-thirds of the country, swept away more than 300 million tons of sand, and covered half of the country with a layer of dust. In Chicago alone, 12 million tons of dust were accumulated.

Desertification in Xinhua is becoming more and more severe, even if the desertification is not controlled, just controlling the expansion of desertification and reducing the danger of some sandstorms is a great merit.

In 1984, Qian Xuesen, the "father of China's aerospace", first put forward the idea of developing the sand industry, and discussed the inevitable trend and development prospects of the sand industry.

It is predicted that this industry will become the "sixth industrial revolution" in Xinhua in the 21st century, and the desert will become a "golden hot land" for enterprise investment.

After entering the new century, the facts have slowly proved that Qian Lao is forward-looking for the future.

According to the experience of various countries in desertification control, Xinhua can transform at least 300 to 400 million mu of desert, which is equivalent to one-sixth of the red line of 1.8 billion mu of cultivated land, and can greatly ease land pressure.

If the desert is fully utilized, it can create millions of green jobs, increase the green GDP by nearly 2 trillion yuan, and lift hundreds of millions of people in the desert area out of poverty and become rich. (To be continued......)
