Chapter III
The elf hesitated, it was clear that he didn't want to cause trouble—even an explorer who had no place to live would want to be an enemy of a city, which meant that he would have to stay away from the city and its allies, even the kingdom in which it was located.
"I'm Heim of the red-haired elf tribe," the elf said, "and this is my companions, the dwarven warlords of the Black Iron Tribe, and Nack and Willy, and we're just passing through here and we'll leave after a day's rest." ”
"I'm afraid it won't work," Heiko said with a blank face, "According to the latest law issued by the lord, any outsiders must be investigated—two days ago, several outsiders looted a shop here, and wounded several soldiers of the city guards as they fled. ”
He turned sideways and made a way, "Please go with me to the city defense team first, if you can prove your innocence, you will be treated with the warmest hospitality." ”
Heim sighed, as the leader of an expedition, there were many times when he had to succumb to certain pressures - it was the only supply point before entering their destination, and if they fell out with the officials here, they would not get the supplies they needed.
The elf and his companions rose from the table and walked through the passage formed by Heiko and his men towards the outside of the tavern, and when Willy, the warrioress, who was at the end, turned her back to the soldiers of the city guards, the latter suddenly pulled out a crossbow machine from the wide cloak.
The tavern's noisy environment muffled the sound of crossbow bolts firing, and the sheriff-turned-killers smirked as they watched the six poison crossbows fly towards their targets. At such a distance, no one would be able to dodge the attack of crossbow arrows without warning, and in just half a second, those sharp arrows would penetrate the bodies of these adventurers. No one would come forward for some stranger whom they did not know, and if they produced some random evidence, they could justifiably say that these people were robbers who tried to resist arrest, and their actions were justified in law enforcement. The soldiers' eyes lit up, as if they had seen the huge bounty that the employer had given them.
At the moment when the crossbow bolt was about to touch the explorer's body, a transparent barrier appeared behind them, and the poisonous crossbow that could penetrate the heavy armor only caused ripples on the barrier and fell to the ground weakly.
The sound of crossbow bolts falling to the ground alarmed several explorers, who quickly turned around, and then, these experienced warriors instantly understood what had happened.
"You despicable dog!" the dwarf's roar drowned out all the voices in the tavern, his massive tomahawk slashing out at the same time as it roared.
A flash of panic flashed in Heiko's eyes, the wheel-like tomahawk put a lot of pressure on him, but as a well-trained warrior, he still reacted in the shortest possible time. The captain of the city guard dodged the heavy battle axe lightly sideways, and at the same time drew his own sword and slashed at the dwarf.
The battle between the two sides immediately caused a commotion in the tavern, with some of the faint of heart fleeing outside, while others hid in the corners of the tavern, shouting and cheering for both sides of the battle as they dodged the aftermath of the battle, one of the few human settlements in this wild land, and the people here had long been accustomed to the scene of fighting with thieves and beasts.
Rhaegar hid in the crowd, quietly watching the sheriffs and explorers fight. The magic barrier was cast by him, and since he heard what the elf said when he entered the door, this geist had already decided to join the ranks of these people, because they had a common destination, the central swamp, and to enter that dangerous swamp, several powerful warriors were undoubtedly the ideal partners of a single mage.
But first, they must pass the current test, and Rhaegar needs a strong assistant, not a few burdens.
Despite their numerical superiority, the sheriffs were clearly outnumbered in the battle, with everyone, including their captain, in a difficult situation, while the explorers had only two men to strike.
The roar of the dwarven battle axe had not stopped since the beginning of the battle, this roar seemed to give him strength, the huge double-edged axe was not much heavier than a straw stick in his hand, and as the great axe streaked through the air with cold light after cold, Heiko and the other soldier were forced to retreat again and again, without the help of the tables and chairs in the tavern as cover, they would have been defeated long ago.
However, it was the female warrior who caught Rhaeggar's attention even more. The young girl wielded the greatsword that others needed to wield with one hand with ease, and the two soldiers' swords were knocked away with great force before they could react, and the two poor men fell to the ground without saying a word.
The other two soldiers were terrified by their companion's encounter, and instead of battling Willy head-on, they used the skills they had learned and the cover of the tavern's complex terrain to entangle their opponents, but apparently, they had miscalculated again.
Normally, skill and speed and strength don't usually come to the same fighter, but Willy broke the mold, and when she leapt over obstacles with astonishing lightness, dodged attacks from unexpected angles with unimaginable flexibility, and knocked one of the soldiers to the ground, fear finally took over the mind of the last opponent, who dropped his weapon in panic and ran out of the tavern.
The battle on the other side had already come to an end at this time, the dwarven tomahawk had already forced Heiko into a corner, the sheriff had completely lost his fighting spirit, and could only passively resist the attacks of his opponents, and not far from him, his companion lay quietly on the ground, apparently out of combat.
"Enough tomahawks. Before the dwarven double-edged axe could split the sheriff's head, Heim stopped him just in time, and the sharp axe stopped less than two centimeters from Heiko's head.
Experienced elves had long since seen that these were indeed a group of magistrates, who had only been temporarily converted into assassins because of the bribes of some people, but that was no reason to kill them - no one would believe the words of a group of strange adventurers, and the citizens would not testify for them, they would only be seen as murderers of the city guards.
"Let's go. He said to his companions, turning and walking out the door.
