Q: Is there anything unexpected about the production of Unheard of Names?

Nagai: The background of Unheard of Flower Names is Chichibu, so we went there to shoot it. In fact, as early as the time of "Honey and Clover", we often did framing work. At that time, I followed director Kenichi Kasai on a large sightseeing bus to see the scenery or go to the art university to collect materials. This meticulous framing gives the illusion that we are going to make live-action works, but we animate them with the attitude of making live-action works. And the title of "Unheard of Flower Names" itself is full of real atmosphere, which can be said to be very in line with the style of the noitaminA column.

Q: That's really interesting. So speaking of noitaminA, what "surprises" have you encountered about it?

Nagai: I guess someone from the TV station (noitaminA producer) attends our plot discussion every time. It made me feel like I was working with them to animate. Usually when making animations, TV stations only play the role of "broadcasting well-made animations", but noitaminA is integrated into the production process. By the way, in the early stages of plot planning, there were some problems around "Naruko Anjo".

Q: Are you referring to the question of whether Naruko Anjo's nickname "あなる" (which means indecent in Japanese) can be broadcast on TV?

Nagai: We checked with the producers of noitaminA in advance, and we got permission to keep it. In addition, we also checked the relevant laws and regulations regarding the question of whether fireworks can be set off when only minors are minors, and we also received great cooperation from the producers of noitaminA. Also, speaking of noitaminA, I bought a prop.

Q: Props?

Nagai: Shortly after the news of the production of "Unheard of Flowers" was announced, noitaminA also held a press conference for the broadcast of the program. Nagai: After the launch of "Unheard of Flowers", noitaminA also publicly exhibited the secret base (Super Peace Busters Secret Base / exhibited at Shibuya PARCO PART1 and other places from June 3, 2011) and made a life-size statue (Mei Honma) ("Hana Unheard Summer Festival 2013"). As early as the time of "Honey and Clover", noitaminA was already doing similar activities, and I was very happy about it.

Q: When the work is getting more and more attention from the outside world, what kind of mood does director Nagai feel when he is on the production site?

Nagai: If I talk about myself, I'm a little cautious (laughs). It seems that I am like this: when everyone says, "This work should have a headway," and then starts planning various projects, I reply with a somewhat onlooker attitude: "No, it can't be so popular." I once asked the publicity planner at Aniplex about the promotion, and he told me, "We have a venue in Chichibu that can accommodate 5,000 people and will hold 'ANOHANAFES.'" ”。 I couldn't help but think, "That's too much of an exaggeration!" "But all of this was made possible by careful planning from an early stage. Well, in retrospect, I'm so grateful. The propagandists took the lead in the sprint, and we followed behind...... Nagai: Oops~ Actually, now that I think about it, it's still uneasy. At the time, I was worried, "What if it rains?" ”

Q: So did you get to know the reaction of the fans?

Nagai: Speaking of which, I have to mention the fact that I witnessed the faces of the guests during the event. Not only the "ANOHANAFES" held by Chichibu, but also the "Hana Unheard Summer Festival" in Odaiba. It's not so much the "response", but when I see the happy faces of the guests, I feel like I've gained a valuable experience.

Q: "The Unheard of Summer Festival" also announced the production of the theatrical version.

Nagai: That's right. Actually, at the time of the announcement, we hadn't decided on anything (laughs). It never occurred to anyone to make a theatrical version of this anime at that time. At first, it started with a relaxed mentality, but in a sense, it still had the effect of "finishing", which is really good.

Q: Just before the theatrical version was about to be released, noitaminA also rebroadcast the TV version of "Unheard of Names".

Nagai: Gee, I didn't expect to replay it with a new theme song (laughs). I think this experience is also very valuable.

Q: If you think there are any advantages or disadvantages of noitaminA, please let us know.

Nagai: What are the advantages...... Let's increase the audience base. noitaminA participates in the production of works with the mentality of "increasing the audience base", so I am very happy and believe that noitaminA is trustworthy. As for the disadvantages...... Time is too short. The anime is only allowed to have 19 minutes and 50 seconds in this story. I control the length of the ending of "Unheard of Names", but since the plot of this game is about 1 minute shorter than other works, it is also very difficult to deal with. Of course, this is also because I am used to the mode of regular works, so I don't adapt to it.

Q: Do you have any expectations for the future of noitaminA?

Nagai: I hope that noitaminA will remain as a "program that allows viewers to watch in real time". Most of today's late-night animations are recorded by the audience first and watched during the day. While this has its advantages, I still want everyone to be able to watch an anime in real time at the same time. Fuji Television's broadcasters and other local organizations can form a powerful bond if they can broadcast a certain work at the same time in the country. And the charm of TV is that people can watch the same work at the same time in different places? I hope that noitaminA will be able to realize my dream in the future.

Q: Is there anything you'd like to do with noitaminA?
