Q: When did you start planning for this project?

At that time, Mr. Sato said, "I want to make the work have a sunny feeling", so I was going to make a work with a passionate sports theme, and the protagonists are all girls, and the friendship story between girls and mecha forms the main line of the work. Personally, I really want to do this kind of theme. When everyone finishes practicing in the hot summer, fry eggs with mechs that have been roasted in the sun...... That's probably how it feels (laughs).

Q: I'd love to see this kind of work (laughs). So what kind of things did you go through after that it transformed into today's "M3~That Black Steel~"?

Okada: Later, Mr. Sato was in charge of the original manga for the monthly COMICBLADE work "MortalMETAL", which was originally very much in line with Sato's style and had "hard-working girls" as the main characters, but the plot gradually became darker. And this time, when making "M3~That Black Steel~", he also said, "I still want to make dark works." You think, when you mention Mr. Sato, there must be a "dark" plot, right? It's already a convention (laughs).

Q: Hey!? Is that the case? (laughs)

Okada: Strictly speaking, I guess I have my own selfish intentions. After all, when you mix Mr. Sato's black belly with the slightly laid-back style of his work, it creates a wonderful sense of layering, and I also enjoy it (laughs). Then Mr. Sato complained, "You see you're finally revealing your true nature, right?" Then he looked forward to the work even more.

However, Mr. Sato had never had the opportunity to be a director of robot animation before, and since there were teenagers and girls in the work, I wondered if I wanted to make the story more sad. Then I had an idea: to make robots active in the development of the relationship between teenagers and girls.

Q: I see, Mr. Okada is very good at group dramas, so it really suits your style. So on this basis, how is it related to the element of "horror"?

Okada: Mr. Sato listened to my idea and decided that his work should be a little more curious, so he said, "Do you want to make it a ghost?" (laughs) He felt that he could make a work that "turns the remaining thoughts and unfortunate people into aliens, and the boys and girls will confront these things."

That being said, Mr. Sato doesn't decide everything, he often needs to pursue some inspiration, and I and all the staff members provide feedback in a timely manner, so as a result, we put a lot of emphasis on interactivity in the production process.

Q: Actually, the dark atmosphere of this work is surprising beyond our imagination.

Okada: If you want to talk about excessive lines or sad plot development, then I should mention the word "red stool" (赤ウンコ) that appeared in the first episode, I guess this word fits my idea very well, right?

But I'd love to say ...... word "poop" (laughs), but I can't say it so directly. So Mr. Sato came up with this idea. He also said, "Anyway, everyone thinks it's Okada's idea, so I'm not afraid of being sprayed" (laughs).

Okada: That's right. There are also some plots about the misfortunes of the characters, and the ideas of the characters' experiences that make people sympathetic, etc., all of which are his ideas, but he wants everyone to think that I wrote them (laughs). Q: Mr. Okada and director Sato have been working together for the first time since "Mercury Navigator ~TheNATURAL~" (2006), but "M3~Na Kurogang~" has created a sense of isolation that is rare in Sato's works in recent years. So why?

Okada: I don't know what to do (laughs). But "Mercury Navigator" is a heartwarming story, and when reading the script, it also gives the impression that the plot unfolds smoothly. Only occasionally can I see some of Mr. Sato's "darkness with scales" (laughs). Of course, although "Mercury Navigator" is generally considered to be a soothing work, there are two sides to everything, right? A sentence sometimes makes people have other meanings in their minds. And this meaning is put on the table in "M3~Na Black Steel~" (laughs). For example, when someone is worried and asks the question "What kind of mood will people feel at such a time", the answer of "M3~That Black Steel~" is completely different from that of "Mercury Navigator". And we also found in the production that "it turns out that there is such a way of understanding a problem". This manifestation is not so much darkness as a conclusion that comes from thinking about many aspects. There are many ways to elicit the feelings of the characters, and director Sato chooses the appropriate way to express them according to the different works.

Q: When creating an original animation, what kind of plot should you start with to set the world view?

Okada: Originally, the project had the premise that "if mysterious information spreads on the Internet, people will die." This time, we added some supernatural elements to this foundation, extending the idea of "body (むくろ)" from the setting of "when you hear a mysterious song, you will die". In other words, when you hear the song, robots will appear and enemies will appear...... With this in mind, the atmosphere of the work is settled.

The stage of the work is due to the sudden appearance of a different space · Ignorance realm", so everyone ran to take refuge in the city. In addition, we have set things such as "there is an uninhabited residential area nearby" and "you can't walk outside after 7 p.m.", and the view of the world has gradually been enriched.

Q: Do you have anything you can tell us about the roles?

Okada: Originally, we wanted Akaji and Minashi to be the twin protagonists. And let Akaji be burdened with some negative emotions, and on the contrary, Junshi has a beautiful side, and in the plot of each episode, the audience is encouraged to discuss the question of "which one is more like the protagonist in this episode". But then Akaji became the single protagonist.

Q: The protagonist of the recent robot animation is always picky by the audience, and he can't be very enthusiastic or hesitant. So I've heard that it's nerve-wracking when creating characters, what do you think about that?

Okada: It's true that we haven't discussed the issue of "not being able to use this kind of character this time", but in retrospect, Mr. Sato didn't really stick to that. So I thought, "Let's just do it, there's nothing wrong with it" (laughs).

In this work, there is first a kind of "middle two disease" like an atmosphere, and Akaji also has the setting of "there is an older brother who can't be surpassed", which makes people feel the enthusiasm of robot animation in the past. It should be said that Mr. Sato's creative method is still very orthodox.

In addition, Mr. Sato pursues the "middle two disease" atmosphere in the protagonist. Therefore, from the perspective of character control, neither can Akaji completely get rid of the dark influence, nor can he be too indecisive, it should be said that he seems to have no emotion, and in a sense he has a closed heart. But he's a handsome guy again...... I think that's a pretty good setting (laughs).

Q: That's interesting.

Okada: However, Akaji is definitely not a very handsome child. Because he is a younger brother, he is a protagonist who often bears the fate of "must always lose to his brother". In the future plot, there will be characters other than Aoji who will come out to hinder his progress, so Akaji, a perfect child, will always face failure. But he will not be depressed or hesitant when he loses, and he can also express his feelings when he meets the girl he likes, which also reflects his ordinary boyish side.

I think that the setting of "He's always been popular, but why doesn't anyone like him" is his merit (laughs).

Q: In other words, you can't just be a handsome vase guy, but do the opposite (laughs).

Okada: Isn't it nice to be a handsome guy who was defeated? In addition, Junzhi also seems to be an innocent and beautiful character. However, there are many flaws hidden behind the excessive beauty. As far as "M3~That Black Steel~" is concerned, we don't intend to portray any handsome boys at all (laughs).

Q: In terms of other characters, if you talk about the characters who have a great impact on the audience when they appear on the stage, then they are hirato.

Okada: At the beginning of the story, everything is based on his actions, so he is the first enemy in a sense. He has a very obvious flaw, and in order to make up for this shortcoming, Hirato always pursues something in his own way for a long time. Among the 8 teenagers and girls, he is also the one who wants to become a pilot. In addition, regarding the role of Hirato, Ayumi Murase's voice can be said to be extremely consistent.

Q: The role of Heito has never been tried by Mr. Murase before.

Okada: At the end of the day, Mr. Murase is a voice actor with a cute boyish voice, but I think he has other potentials. When I saw him dubbing for Pingren, I couldn't help but nod: "That's it, this is the potential I think!" (laughs)
