Don't like animation? Interview with popular voice actress Suzuko Mimori

Suzuko Mimori, the voice actress Suzuko Mimori, who has brought us such popular characters as Sherlock Sherry Holmes, Sunflower Furutani in "Swaying Lilies", Nanao Momozono, and Kaimi Sonoda in "LoveLive!", released her second album "FantasticFunfair" this month. So what are the highlights of the record this time? Recently, some Japanese media conducted an exclusive interview with her, from which you can not only learn the inside story of the production zuò, but also know Mimori's views on animation.

Q: The theme of the album this time is "Amusement Park, Fantasy", so is this the idea of Ms. Mimori?

Mimori: That's right! On the release of the fourth single "せいいっぱい、つたえたい! ", considering that this is also the theme song of the TV animation "Lulu Meng", the witch of cultivation, so in the MV, I made a slightly magical world view. Then I thought, if we could incorporate elements of fantasy into the new album and expand the world of magic. That's where the idea for this record comes in. Because I wanted to express a lot of things, I planned to make a lot of information from the beginning.

Q: What do you mean by "something you want to express"?

Mimori: Since it's an amusement park, I wanted to have a song like "Alice in Wonderland" that would sit on the amusement facility, and so on. As a result, the number of things you want to express has increased. At the end of the day, I felt that it was enough to fill a record, so I decided, "Ah, let's make a second record!" ”

Q: Miss Mimori's first album was called "Like", which gave us a feeling of POP style + energy at that time. This time, the album has everything from pop-style to quiet-style songs, and it makes you feel like your watch is also increasing. So how has Miss Mimori's state of mind changed compared to 1 year ago?

Mimori: My first album a year ago actually included something I wanted to try. This time the album took my ideas a step further. For example, I challenged a lot of things, such as "this sound should be expressed by the piano" and so on...... For example, the song "SpinningStar" also replaces the original part of the stringed instrument with the piano. In this way, the overall style is more hearty and handsome.

Q: Is there anything you are more obsessed with this time?

Mimori: Because it's a fantasy theme, I wanted the melody and timbre to make people feel like they would reverberate in their ears for a long time. In terms of singing style, for some parts that should have been sung straightforwardly, I added a little bit of my own characteristics, or thought of singing in other ways. In short, continue to make mistakes.

Q: The ability to enrich your performance is also due to the proper use of your voice actor and personal life experience?

Mimori: I play different roles depending on the tune. For example, when I first started recording "ときめいてドリーム", the director was a standard Spartan character at that time, so I channeled the personality that was sleeping in my heart. I was just starting to record this record at the time, so I felt like I got a lot of inspiration when I started the other tracks. Something like, "Since the director said that at that time, then I should do it."

Q: What was it like to be at the bottom of Sparta?

Mimori: That's probably how it feels—"It's too early for a vibrato to come out here." Right! It's here! (laughs)

Q: So you gained self-confidence?

Mimori: I feel like I'm getting the most out of my potential.

Q: This time, the album even included a ballade, which was difficult.

Mimori: Yes. The ballade needs to express its feelings delicately, but the singing has to become more powerful. It felt like a dam was about to collapse, and the flood had reached a tipping point (laughs).

Q: Are there any highlights of this album that you would like to hear and see?

Mimori: I recommend all of them, but I feel like there are a lot of tunes that have never been added to the song before. There are rock tunes like "ROLLERCOASTER?" and dark fantasy tunes like "HeartCollection", and "SpinningStar" is also very handsome, and it feels like a song that you sing while dancing. This disc is a great way to see a side that I've never shown before, so I hope you will definitely listen to it.

Q: Ms. Mimori did a great job as a voice actress in the role of Sherlock Shirley Ford in "Detective Opera: Sherlock Holmes", but I think I've heard you say it before, and it seems that you didn't look at the anime much before you became a voice actor.

Mimori: That's right. I hardly ever watch anime, and since dubbing, my life as an anime has just begun.

Q: But there's no resistance to appearing in anime.

Mimori: It's because I don't know anything about the relationship, but I get involved in a confused situation. I was surprised by the fact that the character's hair was pink, and the eyes were almost half the size of his face. In my first year as a voice actor, I felt the culture shock every day, saying, "How can Japan have a world like this!?" Why don't I know so far!? ”

Q: When you chose to play a role in the anime, were the people around you surprised?

Mimori: That's right, I guess everyone around me was surprised. It's just that the fans I cultivated when I used to sing still support me as always, and when they see me at an exclusive event for the first time in a long time, they say things like "I've been paying attention", which makes me happy!

Q: Because of "Detective Opera", Miss Mimori was able to enter the Budokan as a guò group, and as far as a musician is concerned, it is a holy place to dream. Then you didn't feel resistant to performing at the Budokan?

Mimori: I feel very scared. I cringed until the show started, and it was about the second year of dubbing "Detective Opera", so I was thinking, "Is it really good to be here?" "It feels completely unconfident. At the time, I couldn't find the real feeling of standing in the budokan, but when I thought about it later, I slowly savored, "We did such an amazing thing at that time." I'm actually standing in the Budokan Hall. However, during the performance, I was still confused, and I only focused on the performance.

Q: So Ms. Mimori is going to move towards the Budokan as a solo singer?

Mimori: Of course I want to go to a solo concert. I used to sing alone with a band at a RISUANI concert at Budokan before. At that time, I felt very comfortable, especially since the auditorium was very close to the stage, and if you stood on the edge of the stage, you could really touch the hands of the audience. I want to get to see everyone up close, so I'm looking forward to performing solo. And it will be a historic stage, and one day......

Q: Do you think there are subtle differences between voice actors and singers in terms of expression?

Mimori: I don't really care about that. When I was performing as a voice actor, I guess I was in a more neutral position, and I needed to maintain the mental state of the role no matter how I expressed myself. And when I stand on stage as a singer, I feel a strong sense of self and think, "I'm Suzuko Mimori!" ”

Q: A voice actor is a person in charge of the show, while a singer needs to express himself. That's what Miss Mimori thinks. Doesn't such a contrast make it difficult for you?

Mimori: Of course, it's difficult. Because I'm used to playing a role, I was initially confused when people said, "Okay, you can do it yourself." During this time, I was able to communicate happily with the fans among some individual MCs, but at first I was completely confused (laughs).

Q: Is the same on MC?

Mimori: At first, I thought, "What should I say?" What should I do if I am clubbing alone? (laughs)

Q: If you could describe singer Suzuko Mimori in words, what would it be like to describe it?

Mimori: What do you say...... Depending on the song, I feel like I'm playing a variety of roles. For example, when I filmed the music videos for "HeartCollection" and "WonderlandLove", I really felt that I had played a lot of roles in them, is this a kind of multiple personality? Ah, chameleon. I think I'm gradually becoming a chameleon-like person (laughs).

Q: In other words, you incorporate different ideas depending on the song, right?

Mimori: That's right. Depending on the song, I always wonder how to express the lyrics.

Q: What would you say if you could tell your fans about this record?

Mimori: Yes. I'll just recommend it: "Let's taste the unknown taste of Mimori Suzuko!" "Rock 'n' roll is my new challenge, and the same goes for the ballades, and there are also very cool songs, and there are also cute songs, and I feel like I've adopted a lot of things, and the album cover has a really good color palette, so the content is also 'colorful'.

Q: In other words, this record is full of new Suzuko Mimori?

Mimori: Also, if you listen to the songs from the beginning to the end, you will feel like you are on a date at a playground, so I hope you will enjoy it.

Q: Finally, would you like to tell us about your ambitions for the future?

Mimori: My goal this year is to "work harder", but I've been looking for my unknown self and want to turn this form into a reality. If it's a good idea to release a record because of this, then it would be great.
