From Inverted A to Returning to China: Park Lumi talks about the works of Yuki Tomino
In the fall of 2014, "Mobile Suit Gundam G Restoration Campaign" officially launched. The chief director of this work is none other than Yuki Tomino, who is known as the "father of Gundam". Since the first Mobile Suit Gundam, director Tomino has released many popular animations, and he has applied his talents in many fields to the animation scene, and he is also known for his ability to discover young talents. Among them, "Inverted A Gundam", which aired a TV anime in 1999 and was turned into a Blu-ray BOX this year, is one of the masterpieces. The original character of this work, Hiroshi Yasuda, has been active in the game field before, but it was with "Inverted A Gundam" that he officially participated in the animation production. In addition, SydMead, who was responsible for the mecha design of this work, has now shown his talent in many science fiction movies and has become an important figure in American industrial design.
Roland, the protagonist of "Inverted A Gundam", is voiced by well-known voice actress Park Lumi, and her existence also adds some reasons for the success of the work. Park Lumi was originally active as a stage actress, but her first challenge for anime dubbing was director Tomino's 1998 TV series "Mobile Brain" (Kanan Guimos). And the following year, he got the lead role of "Inverted A Gundam". Park Lumi can use her voice to play a variety of roles, but she has a special appetite for handsome women and teenage characters. But in the final analysis, if it weren't for director Tomino and his works, we might not be able to see Sister Park's demeanor today. Therefore, for her, "Inverted A Gundam" and director Tomino should both occupy a lot of weight. Recently, taking advantage of the release of the Blu-ray BOX of "Inverted A Gundam", some Japanese media conducted an exclusive interview with Park Lumei to learn all kinds of unknown behind-the-scenes stories from her mouth.
■Kanan in "Mobile Brain" is similar to me at the time
Park Lumi was originally active as a stage actress, so what was the reason why she chose to work as a voice actress? When asked this question, Park Lumi said: This is still inseparable from her encounter with director Tomino.
And Park Lumi told us a rather surprising story: "When I was auditioning for a voice actor, I was actually thinking about whether to give up acting. At that time, there was an audition for "Mobile God Brain", and Park Lumi said: "Although I thought it would definitely be no play, I still tried it, and the result was adopted." So, this became her first voice actor experience.
However, there are other secrets behind this incident. "Actually, before I even went to the audition, director Tomino came to see my open-air performance in person." But that's what she found out after the fact. Although I don't know if it was deliberately arranged at the time, there is no doubt that director Tomino must have paid great attention to Park Lumi's talent from the beginning.
"Mobile Brain" is a major turning point in Park Lumi's life. Although it was the first time she had experienced the work of a voice actress, she felt that with the help of the seniors around her, she was able to play the role of Kanan well, and she got a great sense of satisfaction. It seems that Park Lumi also has deep feelings for Kanan. Not only because Kanan is her first role, but also because the role itself resonates with Park Lumi. Kanan Gimos is a female driver who pursues the protagonist Sawei Yong. Her posture is elegant and generous, but there are many entanglements in her heart, so she often falls into a state of instability. In this regard, Park Lumi said: "Kanan's personality is very similar to the anxiety I had at the time. ”
Because of this, when the scene of "Mobile God Brain" was completed, "I felt that my voice actor work was all over, so I cried a lot." However, in fact, this role has had a heavy impact on Park Lumi's career. After that, the role that awaits her is the protagonist of "Inverted A Gundam" - Roland.
■Encounter with Roland of "Inverted A Gundam", a teenage character who has experienced several twists and turns
Roland is a 17-year-old boy who came to Earth from the moon. And because of the dispute between the moon and the earth, he was drawn into the battlefield and became the pilot of the Inverted A Gundam to participate in the battle. This is a pure, flawless and passionate character, and he also has something in common with Park Lumi.
However, according to Park Lumei's own words, in fact, she did not aim at the role of Roland at first. "I was going to audition for Deanna at first. However, during the audition process, someone gave me Roland's script book for me to read and read. Although Park Lumi has now won wide acclaim for her excellent teenage voice, at the time, she never thought that she would voice male characters.
"Before, in "Mobile God Brain", I saw Yumi Fuyuma dubbing a teenage character, and I was very shocked." And after he got the role of Roland this time, it was like encountering a "thunderbolt from the blue". However, "Inverted A Gundam" has become Park Lumi's career masterpiece, and it has also opened a new chapter in her field of juvenile roles.
However, in the face of playing the role of Roland, Park Lumi actually faced many difficulties. In the final analysis, she completely did not understand what kind of existence the "teenager" was. For example, the fifth episode is "Deanna Descends", in which there is a plot where Roland is hit in the crotch and has a pain in the egg. If it is a man, then it should be possible to understand this pain. However, Park Lumi is a woman after all, so when she recalled this experience, she said, "After all, I am not a man, and I don't know what kind of pain it is." Of course, although we can now say that "when it comes to women dubbing teenagers, it is inevitable to look at Park Lumi's Roland", but the tidbits of her youth are also talked about by everyone.
However, director Tomino didn't actually pursue Park Lumei's outstanding acting skills at that time, but asked her to show her purest side. According to Park Lumi's recollections, director Tomino once said to her, "You can perform according to your instincts." ”
■Director Tomino has an aura
On the other hand, in the process of dubbing work, there have been many interesting stories between Park Lumi and director Tomino. If in "Inverted A Gundam", when did the character of Roland first impress the audience, then it should be the first episode of "Shouting to the Moon", in which he shouted to the moon: "Everyone, hurry up and come back to Earth!" "The picture of it. This is also the place to fully experience Park Lumi's outstanding acting skills. But in fact, it is not easy when it comes to dubbing.
At that time, director Tomino was acting director, and he stood on the other side of the microphone in the recording studio and shouted enthusiastically at Park Lumi: "Harder, harder, harder, harder shouting at me!" It was as if the place where he was was the moon, and Director Tomino looked up at the ceiling, as if he was staring at the moon like Roland. Park Lumi said that the gesture of director Tomino at that time is still fresh in her memory to this day. And this is also a big legend that director Tomino worked the dubbing scene.
In addition, Park Lumi also told us about her injury before the dubbing. We were also impressed. Just before the dubbing began, Park Lumi was seriously injured, but she still said that "even so, dubbing is a very important thing", and then rushed to the recording studio desperately. Director Tomino was very angry about this and roared, "Why are you running here! In this story, we can also feel the emotional outpouring of "director Tomino".
When commenting on director Tomino, Park Lumi said: "This is an irreplaceable person. Talented. has its own aura. "It seems that he is also deeply moved by his strong personality.
In the interview, Park Lumi showed a variety of expressions while telling her story. When she first became a voice actress and was seriously considering the job of voice actor, her expression was very serious. But when it comes to anecdotes, she shows a very happy and hearty expression again. Through these expressions, we can also think of the various types of characters she has dubbed before. makes people sigh: worthy of the versatile voice actor Park Lumei.
For such Park Lumi, "Inverted A Gundam" should also be a work that incorporates a lot of emotions. "Inverted A Gundam has been loved by a lot of people. Even around me, there are many people who say: I like this work so much. The word "black history" comes up every time "Inverted A Gundam" is mentioned, but I'm afraid only "Inverted A Gundam" deserves the word. To this day, Park Lumi still feels that "Inverted A Gundam" has a sense of closeness.
And when dubbing the last episode, Park Lumi couldn't cry again. Not only as a voice actress, but also has a deep affection for her works. And there is no doubt that "Inverted A Gundam" and Roland's existence zài precisely constitute the starting point of Park Lumi's career as a voice actor.
