Chapter 054: Expectation

Li Kangping said: "Bendong has just come to the United States and knows the domestic situation best, so why don't Bendong talk about the current situation of domestic physics?" ”

Ben Dong, a graduate of Tsinghua University, went to the United States in August this year to study at Stanford University, he said worriedly: "It is difficult to solve the fundamental problem of importing apples from foreign countries, and it is necessary to cultivate Chinese apples on Chinese soil, but there is no fertile soil in China at present." ”

Ben Dong is young, but he can describe the truth and profound truth in simple words.

We won't mention the Qing Dynasty, since the Republic of China, China has not had the soil environment to train modern physicists and modern scientists, so it sent students to study overseas.

There are very few Chinese studying physics abroad, a small number of Chinese physics students return home, and face a series of problems, there is no physics institute in Chinese universities, physics departments may just be a name, no people, no funds, no local students to grow up.

At the end of the day, it's the soil. The "foreign apples" who returned to China tried to sow seeds in the soil of China and cultivate Chinese apples that were born and grown. But unfortunately, the "foreign apples" were disappointed to find that this was an unattainable goal.

Li Kangping was full of emotion, he said: "Whether relying on domestic soil or borrowing foreign soil, the top priority is to cultivate a large number of physical and scientific talents for China. ”

Kang Ping's words are suspected of "nonsense", who doesn't know such a truth?

What about the details? What about the specific plan?

Speaking of which, it is not about sending Chinese students abroad, and when they return to China, they repeat what happened to their predecessors.

There are some things that Kang Ping can't say too bluntly at this time.

Kang Ping believes that sooner or later China will have a day of stability and harmony, and at that time, we will need a large number of professionals to build the motherland.

It takes a long time to train professionals, and we can't wait until China is stable and harmonious to cultivate talents, but we must start to lay out from now on.

Science knows no borders, but scientists have a homeland, and there may be factions.

We have grown 10,000 apples, and we dare not expect them all to be used by us, and it is acceptable to use 8,000 or 5,000 apples.

During the banquet, Li Kangping talked about what he should have said, and of course he didn't talk about what he shouldn't say.

This holiday, Li Kangping and Liujun get along day and night. After New Year's Day in 1922, the six monarchs took their leave and returned to their respective universities.

In January 1922, the construction of the Zeus Mahjong Factory in Manhattan began. Li Kangping looked at the construction on the construction site, knew that there was no turning back when he opened the bow, and hoped that the mahjong business could bring the first pot of gold.

Li Kangping saw a news in the newspaper that in 1921, the sales of the American radio market reached 40 million US dollars.

$40 million, that's a huge market.

Li Kangping knows in his heart that it is difficult for the mahjong business in the United States to reach a scale of 40 million US dollars a year.

So why do you do mahjong?

Aren't you a physicist, radio is your professional counterpart, why don't you make a radio with a larger market capacity?

My mahjong factory has started construction, what can I do?

The editor-in-chief of Lopis spoke and counted, and the Physical Review was changed to a monthly journal, published once a month.

In January 1922, the Physical Review published Li Kangping's "Matter Waves".

"Oh! Oh! Oh! ”

Li Kangping looked through the latest issue of Physical Review, and objectively speaking, his mood was excited.

In Li Kangping's memory, Duke de Broglie published four papers from September 1923 ~ November 1924, which proposed the concept of material waves (de Broglie waves) and depicted the rudiments of wave dynamics.

Wave dynamics is actually quantum mechanics, which was called wave dynamics in the early days, and was later renamed quantum mechanics by the Copenhagen School led by Bohr and Heisenberg.

Matter waves are an extremely important precursor to quantum mechanics, which has cleared the way for quantum mechanics and enabled quantum mechanics to develop and grow rapidly. The Duke of de Broglie was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1929.

When Duke de Broglie's theory of material waves was first published, it did not receive much attention.

It was not until the summer of 1925 that Albert Einstein openly mentioned matter waves in his newspapers, where he wrote: "The work of the Duke de Broglie is the first faint light that illuminates our most difficult mysteries of physics." ”

From November 1925 ~ February 1926, Heisenberg, Fermi, Dirac, Pauli, and Schrödinger published five important papers on quantum mechanics alone.

While the five bigwigs laid the foundation for quantum mechanics, Davidson, a little-known researcher at Bell Labs in the United States, tried to prove the theory of matter waves using experiments in which electrons are diffracted by crystals.

Davidson's experiment was successful, and his paper was published in the April 16, 1927 issue of Nature.

Two months later, J.J. Thomson's son, G.P. Thomson, published a similar paper.

American and British research teams have proved that matter waves, and the Duke de Broglie is only then that he really became famous.

For experiments in which electrons are diffracted by crystals, Davidson and G.P. Thomson were jointly awarded the 1937 Nobel Prize.

It can be seen that quantum mechanics is not the quantum mechanics of one person, but the result of the joint efforts of many physicists around the world.

In this life, Li Kangping's version of "Material Waves" was published in January 1922.

What's next?

Li Kangping was very conscious, he was not ready to trouble Davidson and G.P. Thomson to do the experiment, he decided to complete the experiment of electrons diffracted by crystals, guess and prove himself, and be self-reliant.

Li Kangping suddenly had a bold but reasonable idea.

The experiment of electrons being diffracted by crystals is more or less in line with the majors of the four brothers, Brother Qisun, Brother Yutai, Brother Youxun, and Brother Xiaoxian!

Brother Qisun is a master of diffraction experiments, and the new version of Planck's constant is measured by Brother Qisun using X-ray diffraction method.

He received his master's degree from Harvard with his thesis on Planck's constant, and he is currently working with Professor P.W. Bridgeman at Harvard University on high-voltage physics.

This is not to say that high-pressure physics has no future, for P.W. Bridgeman devoted his life to the study of high-pressure physics, for which he was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1946.

However, Brother Qisun did not get a light on P.W. Bridgeman in his life, and P.W. Bridgeman brought Brother Qisun to graduate from the doctorate and did not promote Brother Qisun much.

Of course, Brother Qisun resolutely returned to China after graduation, and it was difficult for him to enjoy the support of Duane or Bridgeman in China.

Li Kangping wrote a letter to Brother Qisun, in which he wrote, "My new paper "Matter Waves" was published in the new issue of Physical Review, and after Brother Qisun received a PhD from Harvard University, can he help me complete the verification experiment of matter waves?

Li Kangping sent the letter to Harvard University, and he was expecting a reply from his grandson.
