Chapter 30 Transforming the Rebel Forces

Some comrades, because of their bad backgrounds, are not popular in their roots, and carry heavy ideological burdens, fearing that their ideological understanding is not high, that they will not be able to complete their studies, and that they will go to society in the future and that others will poke their backbones. In order to enable everyone to correctly treat their backgrounds and lay down their burdens, the Political Department of the XPCC sent a working group to hold a forum to talk to us and publicize the relevant policies on intellectuals, telling everyone that they cannot choose their background, but they can choose the road of revolution.

As long as everyone can recognize their own shortcomings and set strict demands on themselves with high standards at all times, they will surely win the praise of their comrades. A week later, everyone passed the graduation thesis review.

One day in May 1950, the graduation ceremony was held in the playground behind the "Hui" building. Chen Geng, commander of the Corps and president of the fourth branch of the Military University, Liu Youguang, director of the Political Department of the Corps, and other leaders attended the meeting.

Dedicate your youth to the motherland

Carry the revolution through to the end

The white characters on a red background are very eye-catching. More than 4,000 students sat on the ground in a column. The meeting was presided over by the director of the political department of the university, and President Fan made a "report on the work of the fourth branch of the military university", and President Chen made an important speech. He said: Comrades, under the leadership of the party, after 28 years of bloody struggle, we have finally overthrown the three mountains of imperialism, feudalism, and bureaucratic capitalism that were pressing on our heads, established New China, and since then we have stood up, and socialist construction is about to begin! ......, today, after more than a year of study and exercise, everyone finally graduated! I hope that everyone will obey the needs of the revolution, do what they do, love what they do, learn on the job, improve their ...... in practice, be a real revolutionary, win glory for the motherland, and add luster to the army! …… There was thunderous applause at the venue, and everyone's emotions reached their peak. The conference ended with the singing of the Internationale.

In early May 1950, the school issued each of our cadets a graduation certificate, a military university emblem and a letter of appointment.

These precious historical documents have been with me to this day. In that era of destruction of humanity and desecration of culture, my old wife, who was very close to each other, hid these precious documents in the mud walls, so that they were not lost. Fortunately, in 1986, when the appointment of intellectuals was resumed, my graduation certificate and emblem of the Military and Political University, which had been sleeping at the bottom of the box for 36 years, played an important role.

I didn't say it, the first evaluation was in place in one step - I was rated as a senior teacher in a secondary school. Many people can only sigh and regret because they have lost their graduation certificate or do not have a university graduation certificate. I would like to express my deep gratitude to my beloved wife for her courage in preserving these precious artifacts for me.

All the cadets of the fourth branch of the military university left the school on May 25, 1950 and went to their new jobs. The general whereabouts of the trainees were: Some were assigned to the 14th Army and went to western Yunnan, some were assigned to the 13th Army and went to southern Yunnan, some were assigned to the 15th Army and went to Luzhou in Tianfu, some were assigned to reform the insurrectionary troops, and a small number were selected to go to the navy, air force, and other units. I was assigned to reform the rebel troops.

The insurrectionary troops, numbering about 100,000 people, were reorganized into the 12th and 13th armies and stationed in their original positions according to the agreement at that time. Cadres at and above the division level are concentrated in the school headquarters of the fourth branch of the Military University, cadres below the division level are concentrated in the barracks on the west side of the Military University, and non-commissioned officers below the level are concentrated in the barracks on the east side of the Military University.

I was assigned to the 5th Squadron of the 10th Brigade. The political commissar of the brigade is Du Jing, and the captain Cao Mou. Our squadron leader's name is Zhang Wenyi, and the instructor is from the teaching regiment, plus the clerk, the chief of affairs, the staff of the three district teams, and several cooks, there are more than 30 people in total.

In order to do a good job in reforming the insurrectionary troops, the higher authorities specially selected comrades who were politically reliable, had a high ideological consciousness, had a strong theoretical level, and were active and willing to work as the representatives of the army to transform the uprising. Before taking up our posts, we underwent strict pre-job training, and our superiors demanded that we take the transformation of the insurrectionary troops as a special political task. It is a major matter that has a bearing on maintaining social stability, establishing an international and domestic image, and influencing the reactionary army that has retreated from the island province. It's the work of being human, and it's the hardest job to do.

We studied the principles and policies, organizational principles, work methods, work procedures, and work discipline for reforming the insurrectionary troops, and analyzed the ideological situation, organizational form, personnel composition, and social relations of the insurrectionary troops, as well as the problems that may arise in their future work. Our principle is: move with affection, know with reason, treat each other with sincerity, fight back, scold without returning the mouth, be amiable, but also be strict, treat them as astray brothers and sisters to save, and never discriminate. We can only educate patiently, and do not engage in coercive orders.

Our squadron received more than 240 insurgents divided into three district teams, each of which was about the size of two regular platoons. I was in the third district team, a total of 87 people.

The next day we went to the northern suburbs to receive the insurrectionary troops of a certain company, and after meeting with the captain, we took the troops to the designated place, and after checking them one by one according to the roster, the captain suddenly said to me before leaving:

"I handed over eighty-seven people to you, and when I come back from studying, I will need so many people."

I chuckled in my heart, it was very unpleasant, but it was inconvenient to have a seizure, so I just said: "Don't worry, I'll take it for you for the time being, you come back from studying, and a soldier won't miss you." ”

Later, after studying, especially through class education, remembering bittersweet and bitter memories, and organizing and participating in the land reform and the struggle against landlords and bullies, these soldiers were deeply shocked in their hearts and improved their ideological understanding.

According to the roster, the oldest of the rebel troops was sixty-three years old, and the youngest was only thirteen years old. Judging from the length of the army, the long one is more than ten years, and the short one is two to four years. Judging from the enlistment, most of them were arrested by force, and a few were arrested to find a way. In terms of education level, the highest education is high school, and more than half of them are illiterate. Judging from their political quality, most of them have become "fritter" soldiers, some are ruffians and big smokers, some have venereal diseases, and some are habitual thieves and gamblers. They have been mixed in the black dye vat of the old society for so many years, and there is very little real humanity anymore.

The complex social background of these insurgents is the epitome of a reactionary army. As education progresses, we find that there is much more to it than that. Among them, there were also enemy and special elements who came in with special missions, who spied on our army's intelligence, instigated confrontation, organized riots, and carried out counterrevolutionary activities such as assassination and poisoning.

This is the first time I have taken on this "great task", and I have relied on the simple and pure thoughts and feelings of my students to consider problems, and sometimes I have a warm affection for them, and I hope for stability as well. In the early days, I felt that they were still "obedient" and "disciplined", and they always reported to the company headquarters every night that "the situation was normal" or "the situation was normal".
