Chapter Seventy-Three: Blitzkrieg
What Shulka said was actually the "blitzkrieg" that the Germans were using, but there were some compromises because of the different conditions of the Soviet army.
For example, the German "blitzkrieg" was very demanding on the Air Force.
As mentioned before, the air force has a great advantage in reconnaissance, and if it does not have air supremacy, tanks are excellent targets under enemy aircraft...... I can't "dodge" even if I want to, and even before I reach the destination, my tank has been almost wiped out by the enemy's air power.
At this time, the Soviet army was at an absolute disadvantage in air power compared with the German army, which Shulka was powerless to change, so he could only ask for aerial reconnaissance.
As for the threat of German air power......
"Weather and camouflage!" Shulka said to Admiral Kirponos: "I heard that the weather in Kyiv is not good during this time? ”
"Yes!" Admiral Kirponos replied: "July and August are the rainy season in Ukraine, and it is rare to have sunny times!" ”
This was clearly not a good time for Germany to attack...... The offensive began on 22 June, followed by the rainy season in July and August, followed by winter in a few months.
So it's a little hard to understand.
But Schulka knew that the reason for this was the delay in the attack...... As early as the beginning of April, the Germans were massing forces on the border and preparing for the offensive.
The offensive was postponed because the Italian army in Africa had already been defeated by the British and Germany had to be reinforced.
This was partly because Hitler needed Italy as an ally, and partly because the strategic position of Africa was extremely important.
This was especially the latter, for whether it could be controlled was a question of whether Britain could be cut off from the British colonies, and whether Germany would be exposed to the enemy.
It can be said that as long as it controls the continent, Britain will not have a problem, because it does not have the ability to cross the English Channel to threaten German control of Europe.
On the other hand, if Germany lost control of Africa, Britain would be connected to the British colonies through the Mediterranean Sea and the Suez Canal, and it would obviously be a great threat to Germany when it recovered.
This forced Hitler to send troops to reinforce Africa, and he would not dare to act rashly until the fighting in Africa was stable. (Note: Rommel reinforced Africa in February 1941)
This is also the reason why Hitler always ordered Rommel to stabilize the front.
In Hitler's thinking, because the German army wanted to use materials and military strength to attack the Soviet Union, of course, it could not fight in the African direction, because the result would inevitably be the need for more troops and materials.
At the same time, the German army did not invest many troops and equipment in Africa, and Hitler did not believe that there were the conditions and capabilities to "fight hard".
Who would have thought that Rommel would enter Africa in February and launch a full-scale counteroffensive in March with a serious shortage of troops and equipment, not only counterattacking, but also defeating the British army all the way.
Even Hitler himself was frightened by this victory, or it can be said that Hitler was also carried away by this victory, so he changed his previous decision to "stabilize the front" and continued to increase troops in Africa, especially the 10th Army of the German Air Force, which was used to bomb the island of Malta.
This delayed the German offensive in the Soviet direction, and it was not until June 22 that Hitler decided that he could spare his hands for a full-scale attack on the Soviet Union...... By this time, Rommel in Africa had regained all the lost territory and controlled the Khalfa Pass, a key point on the border between Libya and Egypt, and had completely thwarted the British counteroffensive a few days earlier.
Hitler promoted Rommel to general, and then he couldn't wait to turn his troops straight at the Soviet Union.
As a result, the timing of the attack was wrong, which also gave Shulka room to operate.
"It was difficult for the Germans to take off in the rain!" Shulka said: "Even if you barely take off, it will be very difficult to achieve results, I mean they want to bomb and intercept our tank units!" ”
Admiral Kirponos nodded in agreement.
Needless to say, visibility is very low during heavy rains, which will bring many dangers to fighter operations, such as turbulence, mechanical failure, etc., and ground bombing and strafing are even more impossible......
This is due to the fact that the fighters fly at very high speeds, for example, the German BF fighters reach a speed of more than 700 kilometers per hour, and the "Stuka" bombers also reach a speed of more than 400 kilometers per hour.
At this speed, the pilot needs to have a good view to carry out dive bombing or strafing, otherwise, the visibility is only a few tens of meters, which means that the pilot has less than half a second from the time he finds the target to react.
Half a second...... Not to mention dropping a bomb and then pulling up the nose and leaving, it is already a god who did not plunge headlong to the ground and crash.
This danger is also present on rainy days, and it is much the same in air combat, where it is difficult for them to keep up with and shoot down enemy planes in poor visibility, even though German fighters are much faster and more advanced than most Soviet fighters.
That is, the rainy season has seriously weakened the air power of the German army, allowing Soviet reconnaissance aircraft and mechanized units to carry out a "blitzkrieg" without air supremacy.
"If we put the necessary camouflage on the tank again!" Shulka continued: "Covering us with leaves, canvas, etc., for example, will make it more difficult for the German planes to detect us!" ”
"The problem is in the command of the tank, Shulka!" Admiral Kirponos frowned and said, "This is also what I have been worried about!" ”
"The command of the tank?"
"Yes!" Admiral Kirponos replied: "We fought a battle with the Germans on the front lines of Dubno, Lutsk and Rivne, and I thought we would be able to win this battle. But...... We had to retreat in the end! ”
Shulka knew about the battle that Admiral Kirponos was talking about, that is, when the Germans first launched an attack, the Soviet army deployed several times more tanks on the border than the German army, but the German army was defeated by fewer victories.
And the Soviet tanks were no worse than the German tanks in terms of protection and firepower, and even slightly better...... THE 45MM GUN OF THE SOVIET T26 LIGHT TANK CAN SUPPRESS THE GERDE NO. 3 TANK, NOT TO MENTION THE NO. 1 AND NO. 2 LIGHT TANKS.
"Communication equipment?" Shulka said.
"Yes!" Admiral Kirponos replied: "Our tanks are seriously lacking in communication equipment, and the radio is barely equipped to the battalion level, which makes it impossible for us to command our own tanks at all, they are almost all fighting on their own!" ”
Unlike other equipment, the tank crew is enclosed in the tank compartment to fight the enemy.
Therefore, if there is no communication equipment, it can almost be said that it is isolated from the world, of course, it is to fight separately and then be broken by the German army.
