Chapter Seventy-Four: Communications
Shulka certainly knew what Admiral Kilponos had said.
In fact, this is what Shulka meant by the use of tanks as the main force......
Tanks and infantry and infantry tanks, it doesn't sound like a big difference, both tanks and infantry go together, and even the establishment has not changed much.
But in fact, in actual combat, there is still a big difference:
The tank cooperates with the infantry, that is, the infantry is the main body to attack, the infantry charges forward like ants, the tanks are scattered among the infantry and follow behind, and then the tank is pulled up when it encounters the key points that the infantry cannot overcome.
In this case, equipping the tank with radio equipment is somewhat redundant and even unnecessary.
Because there is no need for coordination between tanks and tanks, it is more about coordination between tanks and infantry.
The Soviet infantry was rarely equipped with radios, just like the 333rd Regiment only had a radio at the regimental headquarters, so it was impossible to achieve radio communication between infantry and tanks on the battlefield.
The Soviets had their own set of methods, such as with tracer bullets...... The machine gun fires a series of bullets to indicate the target for the tank, or with a signal flag, or the infantry directly climbs onto the tank and tells the tanker what the target is.
It was of little significance to equip each tank with radio communications equipment under this tactic, and the formation of its mechanized units was of no practical significance, since in wartime they were always dispersed among the infantry and used to coordinate the infantry charge.
But if the infantry fights in tandem with tanks, it's different.
This requires groups of tanks to become a whole, and they can flexibly assemble, divide, encircle, intersperse, and so on on the battlefield.
This obviously requires unified command and dispatch, so each tank must have radio communication equipment that can at least receive commands.
Otherwise, once the tank hatch is closed, the inside and outside are like a world of double isolation, and you can't hear and see only a little bit of the situation outside, and how to fight is completely guessed, which obviously won't work.
Therefore, the biggest obstacle to Shulka's tactics with tanks as the main force actually comes from communication equipment, without which it is simply impossible to fight a "blitzkrieg" like the Germans, because the Soviet tanks cannot be integrated to form a force.
This was a tricky problem, because the solution to this problem was to equip each tank with a radio communication device, which was obviously unrealistic for the Soviet army, which had extremely weak communication equipment.
But Shulka certainly thought about it.
"With a semaphore flag!" Shulka said.
"What?" Admiral Kirponos was stunned for a moment, then shook his head and replied, "That's not a good idea, Sergeant!" ”
"The tank crew has a small field of vision!" On this issue, Major Gavrilov sided with Admiral Kirponos: "And their eyes are more often in the direction of the enemy, they cannot see the signal flags waved by the infantry in the rear!" ”
"You don't need them to see it, Comrade Major!" Shulka replied: "We can have two or three infantrymen on the rear armor of each tank, who can both provide cover and warning for the tank and convey orders!"
"Do you mean to say......" said Major Gavrilov, "let these infantrymen at any time observe the signal flags in the rear, and then tell the tank crews?" ”
"Yes!" Shulka replied.
"Maybe it's going to work!" Major Gavrilov still shook his head: "We can arrange these infantry, and these infantry can indeed see the signal flag at any time, the problem is that it is difficult for them to communicate orders to the tank crew in a timely and effective manner during the battle, unless they keep the hatch open and even have to poke their heads out......"
Shulka could understand what Major Gavrilov said, as soon as the tank motor was activated, it was a "rumble", coupled with the sound of gunfire on the battlefield, if the tank hatch was closed, no matter how much the infantry shouted outside, the order could not be conveyed
Therefore, the method of transmitting orders by Soviet infantry is usually with the butt of a rifle: a knock on the left side of the turret is to go left, a knock on the right side is to go to the right, and two knocks in a row is to stop......
Of course, this can only convey some simple commands, and there is nothing that can be done about complex commands, and sometimes even misunderstandings, because bullets and shells passing over the armor of the tank often produce a sound similar to the butt of a gun.
Therefore, if you want to convey orders accurately, you have to open the hatch and even poke your head out to communicate, which is obviously very dangerous in battle...... A poking out tank crew would have been an excellent target for German snipers.
"No, we don't need to!" Shulka said: "We don't need to put the tank crew at risk! ”
Major Gavrilov couldn't help laughing: "Well, what else can we do to get the order in, you know, it's a tank!" ”
"We can use the phone, Major!" Shulka replied.
Major Gavrilov did not understand what Shulka meant.
"Phone?" He looked at Shulka with a puzzled expression: "How can we call them......"
"It's easy!" Shulka replied: "Put one phone in the tank, another on the rear armor of the tank, and then connect the inside and outside with a telephone line......"
Admiral Kirponos and Major Gavrilov were stunned on the spot.
Then Admiral Kirponos exclaimed excitedly: "It sounds doable, and the cost is low, we only need to install a telephone for each tank instead of a radio!" ”
"Yes General!" Major Gavrilov laughed, patted Shulka on the shoulder and praised: "Very good, Shulka! This allows us to convey orders to each tank and effectively direct them to attack in their own direction! ”
Major Gavrilov is exaggerating what he said, after all, there is still a difference between the signal flag and the radio, it cannot effectively command every tank, it is more a company unit for command, otherwise the rear will be full of waving signal flags, and no one knows which one is the order given to him.
But even so, it would be much better than the previous mission that relied entirely on guessing the target of the attack and relying entirely on tracer bullets.
"That's it!" Admiral Kirponos did not hesitate: "I immediately asked them to put a telephone on every tank......"
"It's better to have the phone in a lower position!" Shulka said: "In addition, it is better to have a longer line, so that the infantry can pass orders even if they are not on the rear armor of the tank, that is, they are following behind it!" ”
Admiral Kirponos nodded in agreement.
"This is a pioneering act, Comrade Sergeant!" Admiral Kirponos exclaimed: "I believe that this modification will soon be popular in the whole army!" ”
