Volume IV Chapter 4 Quality of Weapons

Zhu Cijiong has been thinking about why the Ming army, which has thermal weapons, could not defeat the backward Qing army, at the beginning he thought it was caused by range, penetration, accuracy, etc., and after he became the emperor, he saw more things, and the reasons for the defeat of the Ming army were more comprehensive.

He found that range, penetration, and accuracy were not the main reasons, but the biggest reason was the poor quality of the weapon!

For example, Qi Jiguang recorded in "The Actual Record of Military Training":

"Firearms alone are my strengths, but firearms are sick. …… The mouth is crooked and evil in different sizes, the lead is not close to the mouth, and the size of the tip is not the same, there are temporarily those who cannot be put in the mouth, there are only those who are only in the mouth, there are those who flow out when the mouth is big and small, there are those who twist the medicine thread and cannot enter, and those who twist it with a guide and spit, and those who extinguish the fire line, all of which cannot be released, and there are already twenty rods. The release is not accurate, and the wetting is not combustible, and there are more than 40 rods. The winner is only more than 20 strokes. There are his legs and horses' legs, which are not fatal, and they cannot be beaten to death. Among them, he was fatally executed and killed, but more than a dozen. If the husband rushes with thousands of enemies, how can he kill more than ten people, and make them go? Now that I and you have not yet gone out, and we have not yet met the enemy, we have already lost. ”

This account truly reflects the quality of gunpowder weapons in the Ming Dynasty:

Some barrels often do not fit the size of the projectile, resulting in soldiers not being able to load the projectile into the barrel when they are about to fight; Some of the starting devices have problems, and often they can't be ignited; Others have unstable launches, high and low, and fail when they are slightly wet.

There is really no problem at all, only 20 out of 100 shots, and only a dozen of these 20 strokes can guarantee the power, that is to say, the pass rate of each gunpowder weapon in the Ming Dynasty is only about 15%! And this 15% can't guarantee accuracy, most of them are hit on the legs of horses or people, and they can't kill people at all!

The actual situation on the battlefield is that thousands of enemy people rushed over, and the Ming army went down with a round of guns, killing only a dozen people, and then, the enemy rushed to the front! How can this battle be fought? What is the use of such a gunpowder weapon?

Even Qi Jiguang said: Now that I and Zhujun haven't gone out yet, we haven't seen the enemy yet, and we have already lost!

Therefore, the quality of gunpowder weapons is the key to the Ming Dynasty's inability to defeat the Qing army, which also led to the fact that the Qing Dynasty has not paid attention to the development of gunpowder weapons since its establishment. In their opinion, gunpowder weapons are a joke, and the actual combat effect is so poor, it is not as good as a bow and arrow!

Zhu Cijiong naturally wouldn't let gunpowder weapons become a joke on the battlefield, so while increasing production, quality was also the focus of his consideration.

Someone has to ask, since you attach importance to the quality of weapons, why don't you set up a quality inspection department? In fact, there is a quality inspection, and each gun must be tested after it is assembled, and this testing process is a quality inspection process. But good products are made rather than inspected, quality inspection can at most ensure that unqualified products do not flow into the hands of users, to really improve quality, or to work hard in all aspects of production.

Someone else wants to ask, isn't it a contradiction that you want to increase production and improve quality? In fact, sometimes yield and quality go hand in hand, and there are many ways to improve both yield and quality.

For example, in this modern factory management system, after the establishment of a management level, each leader only needs to manage five people at most, so that they can effectively supervise the work of their subordinates, not only can arrange the work of everyone under them, but also urge them to do a good job in the quality of parts. There is a person watching behind, and the workers will not be lazy; If this person comes to see how they are doing from time to time, then even if they don't do well, they have to find a way to do it well.

There are many ways to improve both output and quality, and Zhu Cijiong is ready to promote some improvements that are not difficult to improve and have relatively fast results.

For example, in the design stage, many designers like to copy manuals or ready-made things, and use them with a slight change in size, without considering the problem of processing. This is actually not right, there is definitely no problem with the previous design, but it is also designed according to the previous processing equipment, the processing equipment has been updated, and the original design is copied, which will not only affect the production efficiency, but also may cause quality problems.

Zhu Cijiong carefully studied the parts diagram of the new flintlock pistol, and found that many parts were copied from the rigid, although it did not affect the function, but it invisibly affected the processing efficiency and part quality. It is possible that the designers of the miracle company did not know much about ancient gunpowder weapons at all, so they could only piece together and draw scoops according to the gourd, sort out all the graphic materials, and put things together.

There are many parts that can be stamped and formed on the punch press at one time, but the strange shape to be designed can only be forged by hand. It is conceivable to stamping with a punch press and forging by hand at this speed, maybe ten have been stamped out here, and one has not been created over there. Moreover, the parts punched by the punch are punched out of a mold, as long as the mold is fine, there will be no quality problems; Hand forging is different, ten people can create eleven tricks for you, and you can imagine how high the pass rate can be.

Zhu Cijiong is going to find a few typical parts to come out, inspire Bi Maokang and them, let them try to slowly improve the drawings of the parts, try to rely on the existing equipment for the processing of all parts, and do not process them manually if they can do it by hand, not to mention the time-consuming and laborious process, and the quality is not guaranteed.

Another example is the production stage, if there are many machine tools, we should pay attention to the subdivision of parts, try to let each worker who drives the machine tool only process a certain part, and do not think that every worker will make all the parts of the flintlock pistol. This is a problem of practice makes perfect, a flintlock pistol has dozens of parts, and a part may be proficient in a month, but it is impossible to be proficient in each part for a few years.

There is also tooling, the tooling mentioned here is not the uniform of the worker, but the auxiliary equipment for processing parts, for example, a part has three key sizes, if each processing is under the ruler to measure it carefully, so that the quality is guaranteed, and the efficiency is low. It takes time to look at the size, ten seconds to see once, 10 seconds to see 10 times, and 30,000 seconds to make 100 such parts a day, that is more than eight hours! Well, you can work 10 to 12 hours a day at most, so you don't have to do anything, just look at the size.

If you do three tooling out, it is exactly the card of these three sizes, process it, card it, don't look carefully, the right size is right when you card in, and the size of the card is not right if you can't get in or the loose size of the card is not right, so that you can save nearly six hours of time at the end of the day!

So this tooling must have, and the more the better, don't be afraid of trouble, compared with the time saved, the time to make tooling is nothing at all.

Zhu Cijiong listed all these methods that can improve both output and quality, and is ready to take some time to train Bi Maokang and Song Yingxing.

Seeing these familiar methods, he couldn't help but think of his own job, that is: compiling process flow sheets. That is, who designs a part, which workshop is responsible for production, what materials are used, what machine tools are used, size requirements, appearance requirements and so on.

As soon as this list came out, the work distribution was simpler, Zhu Cijiong was itchy for a while, picked a more familiar part, drew a simple table on rice paper, and filled in the content one by one, and the world's first process flow sheet was born.

Zhu Cijiong proudly flicked the list on his hand, he has studied this thing for a few years, and it is naturally very standardized to make it, I don't know if Song Yingxing can compile the process flow list of all parts in this format. As for this form, although there were no computers and printers in the Ming Dynasty, there was movable type printing, as long as the list was compiled and taken to a typesetting, the printed list was almost no different from the computer.
