Chapter 124: The Spanish Civil War

On July 14, 1936, in Morocco, Spain, a slightly blessed man gave a famous speech calling on the Spanish colonial troops stationed in Morocco and the Canary Islands to stand up and fight Madrid.

The man's name was José Sanhujo.

His call was quickly heeded by the colonial army, which rebelled in Morocco and the Canary Islands, instigated by generals Francisco Franco and Emilio Mora, who soon occupied and controlled a small part of Morocco and the Canary Islands, and began to spread into Spain.

Ten days later, the rebellion quickly spread to large and medium-sized cities such as Cádiz, Seville, Zaragoza, and Burgos, and most of the Spanish Army and Air Force (about 120,000 men) declared their support for José Sanjujo and joined the rebellious Spanish colonial army.

Taking advantage of the government's hesitation, the rebels quickly occupied Spanish Morocco, all of the Canary Islands, the Balearic Islands, and the northern and southwestern provinces of mainland Spain, and on July 30 set up a "National Defense Governing Council" in Burgos in an attempt to flank Madrid from the north and south.

But they didn't, and within two days of the rebellion, 300,000 people joined the Spanish militia, the People's Guard.

Under the joint operation of the National Guard and the Spanish Republican Army, the rebellion in large and medium-sized cities such as Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Cartagena, Malaga, and Bilbao was quickly quelled. The Spanish National Army (rebels) controlled only Andalusia in the south and the economically backward provinces of Galicia, Navarre, and Old Castile in the north. The IRA controlled all industrial and political centers, major ports, communication arteries, and important agricultural areas.

Just when the two sides were fighting a difficult battle, bad news came from the side of the national army - the plane on which the leader of the national army, José Sanhuho, was traveling crashed due to overloading, and José Sanhujo died on the spot.

Upon hearing this, the morale of the National Army plummeted, and although it was able to hold its ground under the efforts of the new leader, Francisco Franco, and Emilio Mora, the number two of the Wehrmacht, it had no more strength to attack.

Franco saw that the situation was critical, and the national army was unable to fight again, so he had to look abroad, Britain and France could not be relied on, and the best choice was Germany and Italy, which were equally ambitious.

On 25 July, Franco secretly flew to Berlin to meet with Lyon, who had won over Czechoslovakia (not much different from annexation), which had acquired the world's seventh-largest industrial output and Europe's second- and third-largest arms factories, Mussolini, who had not long since annexed Russia, and Hacha, who was bent on making Britain and France pay the price for the betrayal of Czechoslovakia.

"Lyon, Mussolini, Mr. Hacha, I need your support!" Franco got straight to the point as soon as he came up, which shows how critical the situation in Spain is.

After listening to Franco's words, the three of Leon looked at each other, and they both understood that the big fish was coming!

Leon knew that he couldn't be in a hurry first, and he had to wait for the big family to get up in a hurry before he could make a move.

He was not in a hurry and said to Franco, "Mr. Franco, what is the hurry?" We all know the strength of the Spanish National Army, the decline must be temporary, after all, you are composed of professional soldiers, it is impossible for you to defeat a group of civilians who have not even experienced much military training, right? ”

Franco was really anxious when he heard this, he thought to himself, Lao Tzu is going to be beaten into the sea and driven back to Morocco and the Canary Islands, and he was forced to ask for support in desperation, and you still say that the decline is temporary?

"Mr. Lyon!" Franco wanted to cry and said, "The situation is really bad, our last position in Spain is about to be lost, you don't want to talk about it anymore, I don't think you want to watch Spain be controlled by the Soviet Union, right?" ”

"Well, what do you want from us?" Leon saw that his appetite was almost hanging, and began to return to the topic, "Rifles? Tank? Or an airplane? Even if you want to lease our warships, you can talk about it. ”

"I don't want arms." Franco shook his head and said, "I want your direct support!" ”

"Direct support? Do you want us to send troops to fight for you? Leon asked knowingly.

"Yes, as long as you can directly send troops to support us, the conditions are easy to negotiate!" Franco said anxiously.

"Let's directly intervene in other countries by armed force? That's a bit of a big price. Leon said playfully.

"We've made Britain and France very dissatisfied lately, or else, let's forget it, right?" Hacha sang and said as Leon sang and said.

"Yes, yes, yes, there are still Soviet and Mexican volunteers on the side of the Spanish Republican Army, and they can't tear their faces with these two countries for this." Mussolini also "persuaded".

When Franco heard this, a look of disappointment suddenly appeared on his face.

"Mr. Franco came from afar to ask for support in person, how could we just say no." Leon had a "righteous face" on his face: "Don't worry, Mr. Franco, we will definitely try our best to help you!" ”

"Thank you for your help." Franco rekindled hope.

"However, as we said earlier, direct armed intervention with you will cost us a lot." Leon smiled and said, "How do you think this cost, Mr. Franco, can you solve it?" ”

"500 million Deutsche marks!" Franco gritted his teeth.

Leon listened to the offer and shook his head.

"Mr. Lyon, 500 million Deutsche marks is a lot!" Franco hurriedly said, "The cost of a battleship is only about 100 million marks, right?" ”

"No, no, Mr. Franco, I'm not too little." Leon said generously, "500 million marks is too much, we are friends, and friends should not ask for so much." ”

"What does Mr. Ang mean there?" Franco didn't believe that Leon would be so generous, and he asked strangely.

"You only need to sign these two agreements, and we will send troops to help you free of charge, and you don't even need to pay for weapons and ammunition, you only need to bear the living expenses of our soldiers!" Leon said with a sincere face, and then took two copies of the agreement from the secretary present and placed them in front of Franco's eyes.

Franco looked at the two treaties suspiciously, and read out the name of the treaty as if he were talking to himself: "The Treaty of Military Alliance? German-Italy-Czech Condominium Agreement on the Strait of Gibraltar? ”
