Chapter Seven: The Origins of Confucianism (Part II)
[This chapter is really hard to write, and before you know it, it's almost three o'clock again.] 】
It may be the last lecture of the year, but the atmosphere in Hengqu Academy today is a little different from the past, and there are many more students gathered in the main hall than usual.
Today, most of the students in the college have to return to their hometowns, and only a few who lack the money to go home will stay. And several of Zhang Zai's most outstanding disciples, Lu Dazhong and Lu Dajun, who were foreign officials in Lantian Sanlu, also happened to visit Hengqu Academy at this time, and the three Lu brothers gathered together, which is a rare situation. Today's preaching will be a big issue.
Li Fu was looking forward to what his teacher would talk about today, and Fan Yu, who was standing next to him, was a father, and he didn't dare to move. However, when listening to the lectures, Li Fu was on an equal footing with Fan Yu, and he did not need to perform the gifts of the juniors.
Fan Yu is a native of Sanshui, Pizhou [today's Yi County], he is already over thirty years old, he was admitted to the Jinshi early, and he is also one of the disciples who followed Zhang Zai very early. For the past two years, he has been serving as a foreign official. This year, he took a leave of absence, came back to save his family, and by the way went to the newly renovated academy to listen to the lectures. For half a month, he was in the academy. While accepting Zhang Zai's lectures, he also taught his disciples together.
Fan Yu's father, Fan Xiang, was very famous in Kansai. The banknote and salt method used in Shaanxi today was created by it. Save freight, get real profits, one out and one in, Shaanxi has increased the salt tax by hundreds of thousands because of this. At the same time, Fan Xiang was also one of the earliest initiators of Hehuang Kaibian, and forcibly built the ancient Wei village without the consent of the imperial court. Today's Hehuang is successful, the starting point is Gu Wei, and Fan Xiang's contribution is indelible. A year ago, after the Battle of Xizhou, his former friend proposed it to the Son of Heaven, so that Fan Xiang was posthumously gifted, and even Fan Yu's younger brother also got a gift.
Relatively speaking, Li Fu's qualifications are very shallow. Huangyou was born in the fourth year, and he was only in his early twenties at this time. At this age, among Zhang Zai's disciples, he can only be regarded as a small character. However, among his peers, there is Han Gang, who has recently become famous. is also a disciple of Hengqu, and when he heard about Han Gang's many meritorious deeds, Li Fu felt that he could be regarded as tolerant.
Sanlu is here, and Uncle Fan Shishu is also here. Li Fu smacked his mouth, and his thoughts couldn't help but come out, "It would be nice if Han Yukun could come, I really want to meet him......"
Fan Yu smiled and said, "Murong Siwen, who went to Beijing the day before yesterday, didn't he say that Han Yukun would also go to the Jinshi exam this time?" Deserves to come. ”
"But if it's any longer, the little nephew will have to go back to his hometown first......"
Li Futu's words were stunned, and Lu Dalin, who was standing in front, turned his head at some point and glared at the two who were talking in private.
Li Fu immediately shut up and bowed his head. His family and the Fan family are world friends, and Fan Yu is a peaceful character, and the two are friends who have forgotten their years. But Lu Dalin, the youngest of the three Lu, has been following Zhang Zai, and he doesn't even do it, and he is the one who urges the juniors and disciples to do their homework every day, which makes Li Fu very awe-inspired. It was Fan Yu, who nodded at Lu Dalin with a peaceful smile, which was regarded as an apology.
Lu Dalin bowed his head in salute, and then turned his head and stood upright. Li Fufangcai's voice reached his ears, and Lu Dalin didn't like Han Gang's theory, thinking that he didn't follow his teacher's teachings, but went astray. Especially the saying from You Shixiong's side that 'side art can also enter the avenue' is too arrogant, and he doesn't like it very much.
Just as he was thinking about it, Jang Jae had already come out. The great Confucian in his fifties, because he has been thinking hard about the road of heaven and man all the year round, has exhausted too much mental energy, and his complexion is not very good. But when he walked, he walked in a regular manner, and the Confucian atmosphere was contained in his gestures.
The eldest Lu Dazhong took the lead, and nearly a hundred disciples gathered to worship. Zhang Zai waited for them to bow and get up, then bowed back and sat down first.
After the students were all done on the futon, Zhang Zai did not announce the course of today's lecture, but asked straight to the point:
"What is Confucianism?"
What is Confucianism? Zhang Zai's question is very big, it seems to be very empty, but it has a deep meaning, and nearly 100 students are silent.
According to the saying of the text: Confucianism, Rouye, the name of the warlock. Before Confucius, Confucianism was a class, and those who had the skill of governing the country and leveling the country were Confucians. When the sage was born, Confucianism became unique and became a prominent school in the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period. The word Confucianism has become used by a family. After Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty deposed the hundred schools of thought and respected Confucianism, Confucianism became synonymous with scholars.
But on this occasion, the answer that Zhang Zai wanted, of course, was not this. None of the students present will answer the teacher's questions with explanations.
Although Li Fu's qualifications are shallow, his courage is great. Before the two senior brothers, Lu Dafang and Lu Dajun, could speak, he stood up first and raised his voice: "'Ancestor Shu Yao Shun, Charter Wenwu, Grandmaster Zhongni' is Confucian. ”
The first two of these three sentences are from the middle and speak of Confucius. But with the latter sentence, it becomes Ban Gu's statement in "Han Shuyi Wenzhi". Li Fu feels that the so-called Confucianism is basically this truth.
But Zhang Zai gave Li Fu a slap in the face, he shook his head, "Ban Gu's words have to be biased." ”
Li Fu was stunned for a moment, and asked athought, "I don't know what Mr. means?" ”
Zhang Zai did not answer immediately, but asked the disciples: "What should a Confucian do?" ”
As soon as this remark came out, many people understood that Zhang Zai had already said too much about it.
"Those who establish their hearts for heaven and earth are Confucians!" Lu Dajun got up first, "Heaven and earth have no intention. Its benevolence is also just to drum up all things, and it does not share the sorrow with the saints. To preach the holy way is to unite one's own heart with the heart of heaven, to have a big heart, and to stand for heaven and earth! ”
Zhang Zai nodded with satisfaction, "This one." ”
This sentence is the fundamental section of Guanxue. Lu Dajun, the first apprentice, is actually Zhang Zai's friend of the same year. It's not so much a disciple as a mentor. Over the years, he has been figuring out the Confucian road together, and he is the most transparent in his own academics. It is reasonable that Lu Dajun can be the first to say it.
As soon as the first sentence came out, the second sentence followed.
"You should make a life for the people [Note 1]!"
Su Yu stood up, he was a martial artist in Pizhou. He has been practicing under Zhang Zaimen for a long time, and naturally he can easily summarize this sentence, "The people, my compatriots; Things, I and also. For Confucianism, if you are in charge of the world by the Son of Heaven, you should make a life for the people. ”
"This one, too." Jang Jae nodded.
Lu Dajun and Su Yu said it perfectly, and most of Zhang Zai's theory of the unity of heaven and man has been summarized, and Ximing is based on these two sentences. But when the disciples saw Zhang Zai's attitude, they understood that this problem was not over.
"It must be for the sake of the saints!"
Lu Dajun and Su Xun in front summarized the first two sentences of the Guan Xue syllabus for Zhang Zai's disciples, and after a moment of silence, in a corner of the hall, someone continued another sentence.
Everyone looked over, but it was Fan Yu.
"Han Confucianism admires chapter sentences, Tang Confucianism is an elder. I don't know the vastness of heaven and earth, diligently between chapters and sentences, and I am drowning in the outer way, and the way of Confucius and Mencius is not transmitted. It must be a continuation of the sacred learning. Teach the learning of the saints and inherit the Confucian Taoism! ”
Fan Yu said loudly, and Li Fu next to him looked up at him adoringly.
Zhang Zai brought out a little smile, and nodded to Fan Yu encouragingly, "This is also the same." ”
Nearly 100 disciples, like Li Fu, looked at Lu, Su, and Fan with admiration. Being able to satisfy Zhang Zai on this occasion shows that they can already inherit the mantle of Guan Xue. The six ancestors of Zen Buddhism, Huineng, a sweeping monk, did not rely on the sentence 'There is nothing originally, where is the dust', overwhelming the Zen disciple Shenxiu's 'always wipe diligently, don't make the dust', so as to get the Taoist system of Zen Buddhism in the hands of the five ancestors Hongren?
To clarify the avenue, a few sentences are sufficient.
But Zhang Zai was still a little dissatisfied. He looked at the disciples present, and sighed secretly in his heart, Si Mengyuanliu's self-cultivation Qi family governing the country and leveling the world has not yet been summarized in the first three sentences. He learned to bow and horse as a young man, read military books, and many of his disciples were well-trained in military affairs. The six arts of Confucianism, the two techniques of imperial archery are sideways, how can Confucianism not talk about soldiers? It is not enough to rely on the words 'people's things and things' to make a life for the people.
"It......'s not enough," Zhang Zai shook his head slowly.
There was silence in the hall.
The disciples who have received Zhang Zai's teachings actually faintly know Zhang Zai's intentions. But they couldn't organize a sentence that could compete with the first three.
Establish a heart for heaven and earth.
Establish a life for the people.
For the sake of the saints, continue to learn.
Zhang Zai encouraged his disciples to 'have a big heart', not to claim to be arrogant above all else, but to unite the way of heaven and earth with their own hearts, the so-called 'unity of righteousness and life exists in reason, the unity of benevolence and wisdom exists in holiness, the unity of movement and stillness exists in God, the unity of yin and yang exists in the Tao, and the unity of sex and heaven exists in sincerity'. These three sentences that have come out now have thoroughly explained how Confucians should stand between heaven and earth, how to treat the people, and how to inherit the Taoism.
It's just that what should be the last sentence of the outline that is left now?
Everyone pondered and meditated, looking at their expressions, or they might have gained, but none of them could make a sentence.
Mr. Today's earnest teachings induce the students to summarize the teachings he taught, and the program of Guan Xue is in the four sentences. There are already three sentences in the front, and Lu Dalin thinks that the last sentence of the whole article should be kept for himself. And he also felt that this sentence was about to come out, but he paused on his lips. It was a little hard to breathe, as if I was being covered in a cloth bag. He giggled and gritted his teeth, but he couldn't hold back a word.
"Be peaceful for all generations!"
The sound that came from nowhere was like a breeze blowing away the suffocation in Lu Dalin's heart, and the morning bell and dusk drum made him come over suddenly.
"That's right! That's it! ”
As soon as the voice came out, Lu Dalin was shocked, "Who said the last sentence!?" ’
Doubts were still swirling in his mind, and behind the disciples gathered in the hall, that is, outside the gate, there was still a clear and calm voice:
"For Confucianism, you should open peace for all generations!"
Note 1: There are two versions of the four verses of Hengqu. The phrase 'to establish a life for the people' is also read as 'to establish a way for the people'. This article takes the former, which is widely circulated and rhymes at the same time.
