Chapter 1087: The Dispute over the Illiteracy of the Sixth Ancestor Huineng (7)
When Zhang Cambodia recited in one breath: Li hurriedly pulled Huineng to the side of the road, trembling, angry and angry, he couldn't help but slap Huineng and taught him: "What to see, those places, what is there to see!" What about your soul? Got sucked away by those goblins? Shi Ru raised his right hand high and signaled to stop.
Zhang Cambodia looked at Shi Ru, his right hand lightly brushed the long beard on his chin, "Does the master have a high opinion?" ”
Shi Ru's eyes met Zhang Cambodia's gaze, revealing an unfathomable divine light. "I don't dare to take it. Forgive the poor monk's bad news, the book that the donor just recited? ……”
Zhang Cambodia did not wait to be released and said further, knowing its meaning, "A few days ago, Poor Dao happened to accompany a friend to visit the six ancestors in Xialu Village, the former residence of the six ancestors Huineng, and invited this book "The Legend of the Six Ancestors Huineng", which describes the life of the six ancestors Huineng, in the hall of the six ancestors, and couldn't help but open it and read it again, and increased a lot of knowledge. ”
Shi Ru asked: "Can the donor of this book take it with him?" The poor monk was eager to read it. ”
"It's rare for a master to have this Yaxing, a gentleman has the beauty of an adult, and the poor Taoist right should be a gift, and I will give you a copy." Zhang Cambodia generously took out a blue-threaded book from his back pocket and handed it to Shi Ru.
Shi Ru took the book and took a look, only to see the big characters of the six lines of block script on the cover, "The Legend of the Six Ancestors Huineng" came into view, and the four pens in the lower left corner were strong, and the neat handwriting was small on the rope head: "Ming Yi Jushi"
After reading it, Shi Ru was speechless for a while. But the mouth muttered to himself: the language of the Buddhist scriptures is ancient written language, not oral language, can the two communicate?
Zhang Cambodia had insight into his heart, "It is unlikely now, and it was even more impossible at that time." Because in Datang, when people from different regions read books, you can't understand. The Sixth Ancestor himself admitted that 'Hui Neng was born on the side, and his voice was not correct'. Moreover, speaking and writing Chinese have been completely separate from the beginning. You can speak Indian, I speak Central Plains, no one can understand it, pronounce the words, one says east, the other speaks west, and still doesn't understand. But as soon as you write out the Chinese characters, you will understand that the same is true of the Tang people. ”
For example, Zhang Cambodia's first place, the largest and most complete "Book of Rhymes" in the current dynasty, uses reverse cut to annotate. If it is assumed that each initial and each vowel are spelled with a fixed reverse cut upper and lower words, then a phonetic system only needs to cut forty or fifty words up and down. However, the "Book of Rhyme" uses more than 400 upper characters (initials) and more than 1,200 lower characters (finals). This shows that the reading of the script at that time was extremely chaotic and inconsistent in different regions. In particular, many people can't understand the Cantonese and Fujian dialect in Lingnan. What's more, the language of the six ancestors belongs to the Yuezhuang Dong language family, and they should be able to communicate with the ancient folklore singer Liu Sanjie;
Secondly, Buddhist scriptures are sometimes very tongue-twisting. It is suitable for seeing, not for reading, and even less for listening. Try to read a passage from Nagarjuna's "Viewing the Three Phases Seventh":
What is born of life is born of his own life. What is born in this life is also born in life.
If it is said to be born, it can be born in this life. Life is born from the birth, how can the birth be born?
If it is said to be born, it can be born in life. This life is born from the other, how can it be born and born?
If you are born and born, you can be born in this life. If there is no birth, how can it be born?
If you are born in this life, you can be born in life. If there is no such thing as this life, how can it be born?
A young man chopping wood, who can't read a word, just because he listened to a Diamond Sutra, he has become a knowledgeable and thoughtful patriarch, do you believe it or not? I don't believe it anyway. The correct thinking of the Six Patriarchs did not fall from the sky, nor was it inherent in the mind. His correct thinking must have been obtained by studying hard and studying hard. Wu Zetian once sent someone to ask the six ancestors what is the most subtle Buddhist principle? The Sixth Patriarch replied: "It is not constant, it does not come and go, it is not in the middle, and it is not born and does not perish" This saying is learned from Nagarjuna's idea that "it does not arise and does not perish, it does not always happen, it does not come and it does not change, it does not come and does not go".
It can be seen that the six ancestors must be literate. To be literate is to have books to read, and if the six ancestors are literate, they must have a collection of books. "Five Lantern Huiyuan" records that Zen Master Heze once read the "Tripitaka Sutra" in Caoxi Baolin Temple.
