Chapter 713: The Fifth Interpretation of the Birth Zen Product
Master Huineng taught the public: "The zazen mentioned in this method is not attached to the mind, nor is it attached to purity, nor is it immobile. If we say that we are attached to the heart, the mind is originally vain; Knowing that the mind is illusory, so there is no attachment. If we talk about attachment to purity, people's nature is originally pure, and because of the delusion of ignorance, it covers the true nature. As long as there is no delusion, the nature is naturally pure; If the mind is attached to purity, it will produce pure vanity. There is no definite place for vanity, and if there is attachment, it is vanity. Originally, there was no form of purity, but now it has established a pure form, and it is said that this is the work of cultivation; With such a wrong view, one will obscure one's true self-nature, and instead will be entangled in the pure appearance. ”
Master Huineng instructed the public, "Good knowledge! If the so-called cultivator is able to see all the people without seeing the right and wrong, good and evil, merits and demerits of others, this is self-immobility. Good knowledge! A foolish person, although his body is not moving, but as soon as he opens his mouth, he talks about the rights and wrongs of others, which is contrary to the right path. If you are attached to your mind or you are attached to purity, you are obscuring the right path. ”
Master Huineng then said to the public: "Good knowledge! What is zazen? The sitting meditation mentioned in the Dun teachings is to have no attachment and no obstacles, and not to think about all the good and evil realms outside, which is called sitting, and to be able to see one's own immobility inside, which is called meditation. ”
Master Huineng said, "Good knowledge! What is 'meditation'? Detachment from all aspects is called Zen, and inner non-chaos is called determination. If you look at the outside world, your heart will be scattered; If you can detach yourself from all appearances, your heart will not be scattered. The nature of the mind is pure and stable, but because of the situation, the mind is chaotic. If you see everything and your heart is not disturbed, then this is true determination. ”
Master Huineng said, "Good knowledge! Separation from the outside is Zen, inner chaos is determination, and outer Zen and internal determination are called meditation. The Bodhisattva Vows Sutra says, 'My human mind is originally pure. 'Good knowledge! In the course of thinking, one can see that one's own nature is pure, and if you practice diligently, you will naturally be able to achieve the Buddha's path. ”
