Chapter 143: Longshan Asks Zen
In Longshan Guoen Temple, I learned a lot of mysteries of the six ancestors Huineng, saw the Buddha Lishu planted by Huineng and the tomb of the six grandparents, Zhuo Xiquan, and the bathing pool, and also saw Wang Weizuo's "Six Ancestors Huineng Zen Master Inscription", Liu Zongyuan's "Caoxi's Sixth Ancestor Gives Dajian Zen Master Tablet", Liu Yuxi's "Tang Caoxi's Sixth Ancestor Dajian Zen Master's Second Tablet", and the three great writers of the Tang Dynasty set up a biography for the Huineng Tree Tablet.
With so many treasures all over this place, doesn't it also mean that the feng shui here is good? The Guoen Temple surrounded by the mountains, the sound of Bodhi Hui, the sound of burning and things, the water flow is like a chant, the green peak is like a painting, the Zen machine is everywhere, and the scenery is infinite.
Du Wei said solemnly: "I have been in Xinzhou for ten years, and I know that the five ancestors taught the secret and the robe-gold bowl to Huineng, and Huineng is the real sixth-generation master of the Buddhist Zen forest. ”
Huineng (638-713 AD), he was born poor, because of his poor family, he did not enter the school, but at the age of 24, as a practitioner, he became the 33rd generation of Buddhism descended from the blood of Buddha Shakyamuni. Later, he was hunted down and killed and forced to live incognito for 15 years......
It was he who cultivated the seeds of Zen under Bodhidharma into a towering tree, and made it a forest and raised the banner of "enlightenment to become a Buddha", just like the popular grass, which not only made other schools of Zen Buddhism belong to its sect, but also the Zen method he founded has almost become synonymous with Chinese Buddhism.
Zhang Cambodia has a lot of research on Zen, but in the past, Shenxiu has always sat in the hall and said Zen, mistakenly thinking that Shenxiu is the representative of Zen Buddhism, the sixth generation of patriarchs after the five ancestors Hongren...... Unexpectedly, after watching the inscription written by the three great writers for the six ancestors Huineng Zen Master today, Fang Ru woke up from a dream. He looked at the "Inscription of the Six Ancestors Huineng Zen Master" written by Wang Wei, and sighed to the sky: "He is not very literate, but his quotations are respectfully called scriptures, which is the only altar scripture called sutra in Buddhism except for the quotations spoken by Sakyamuni." ”
"He was a woodcutter who had only been selling as a coolie in a monastery for eight months, but he became the sixth patriarch of Zen Buddhism. However, great writers like Wang Wei, Liu Zongyuan, and Liu Yuxi all admired him. Du Fu also admired with admiration.
"The so-called Buddhism is characterized by Zen. Subsequently, Zen Buddhism bloomed with a hundred flowers, competing for wonders and fighting for beauty, and masters came out one after another, and five schools and seven sects were established one after another, creating a glorious situation for thousands of years. ”
Zhang Khan Zhidao: "In the court, once when I traveled with the emperor, when I passed through the Yangtze River, a military attache asked me, 'What is Zen?' ’”
I replied, "When the snow clears, natural spring will come." ”
The emperor pointed to the Yangtze River, where the masts and sails were stacked and the shadows were stacked one after another, and asked, "How many boats are there on this river?" ”
I held out two fingers: "No more, no less, two boats." ”
The emperor asked: "At a glance, there are more than 100 or 1,000 river boats, how can it be said that there are only two?" ”
I said, "One comes for the name, and the other goes for the benefit." ”
"The emperor praised me for speaking thoroughly, and he is even better than God."
"This is Zen, the wisdom of Zen, the attitude of the Zen person, and the demeanor of the Zen person." Du Fu gave Zhang Cambodia a thumbs up.
Du Wei looked puzzled, looked at Zhang Cambodia and asked, "Where is the origin of Zen?" ”
"How can the virtuous nephew ask such a question?" Zhang Cambodia looked at Du Wei quite puzzled, and saw that he seemed to be very serious, not like joking, so in front of their two uncles and nephews, he talked about Zen Yuan:
Speaking of the flow of Zen Buddhism into the eastern soil, it must be traced back to the Wei, Jin, Southern and Northern Dynasties. In the first year of Emperor Wu of Liang (527), it was the season when the golden wind was cool and the rice was fragrant, and a huge ocean-going ship slowly sailed into the mouth of the Pearl River in Lingnan. A deep-eyed, high-nosed, red-bearded monk (commonly known as a monk) stands on the bow of the boat against the wind of the hunting river. His deep gaze, through the light mist, stared at Aurora, a land as ancient and magical as his hometown.
This big ship came from the distant Tianzhu. The monk standing barefoot on the deck is the patriarch of Zen Buddhism, Bodhidharma.
As soon as the bare feet of the Bodhidharma Patriarch stepped on the solid land of the Central Plains and the South China Sea, he declared to the outside world:
"I'm looking for someone who won't be deceived."
At that time, it was the period of the Wei, Jin, Southern and Northern Dynasties. Even Emperor Wu of Liang, who was the emperor of the Southern Dynasty, was not the person Bodhidharma was looking for, so after he crossed the river with a reed, he came to the Taigu Cave of Wuru Peak in Songshan, Henan Province and sat on the wall. I sat here for nine years. It is known as the wall-view Brahmin.
Bodhidharma faces the wall, of course, waiting for a person, a person who is not deceived by others. This person is Hui Ke.
Hui Ke's original name was Shenguang, with a square head and big ears, and he was extremely intelligent. After he heard the story of Bodhidharma's face on the wall, he immediately went to ask the patriarch from the Buddha's hometown for the Dharma.
Shenguang rushed to Songshan, but he touched a nose of ash in Taigu Cave. Nadharma sat facing the wall all day long, silent, unmoving, begging in every way, telling thousands of times, he never even raised his eyelids.
Shenguang said to his heart: Could it be that you are really a thousand-year-old stone Buddha?
From spring to summer, from summer to autumn, from autumn to winter, Dharma faces the wall every day, and the divine light hits the wall every day. But he persevered, and his desire to seek the Tao never ended. In the blink of an eye, it was the cold winter wax moon, and Shenguang insisted on asking Bodhidharma to accept him as a disciple every day, but Bodhidharma still ignored it. However, on this day, in order to seek the Supreme Dao, Shenguang made up his mind: If you don't agree to my request, I will stand outside the cave and never leave!
This day is the ninth day of the lunar month. Laba, Laba, go out frozen stupid. These days are the coldest time of the year, and the air is condensed and frosty, dripping into ice. The wind was like a quick knife, and again and again, it cut small cracks on Shenguang's cheeks; The cold air was like an ice snake, burrowing into the bones from the soles of his feet, biting at his nerves......
He is also like Bodhidharma, motionless. At night, heavy snow falls from the sky. The wind swept the snow grits, smashed on the face, fell into the collar, and the divine light was shivering with cold. But he insisted on standing outside the cave in the bitter cold and the wind and snow. The night is getting deeper and deeper; The snow is getting heavier and heavier; The wind is getting colder than ever......
The north wind was tight overnight, and the snow was still drifting at dawn. The divine light that stood outside the Taikoo Cave for a whole night was covered with snow grits, frost flowers, and ice pendants, as if the frost had solidified and the ice was carved with snow.
Master Bodhidharma's consciousness came out of meditation and glanced out of the cave. So, he not only saw the whiteness of his eyes, but also the divine light like a snowman in his eyes. He asked quietly, "What do you want to ask for after standing in the snow all night?" ”
Master Bodhidharma finally spoke! Shenguang was ecstatic and excited. He was sad and happy, and the two lines of tears, which I didn't know whether they were bitter or salty, sweet or sour, or a hundred flavors intertwined, poured down......
After a while, the divine light intermittently popped out a sentence from between the gurgling teeth: "Harmony, monk, kindness, compassion...... Compassion, for, for me, open, open, open the nectar method. ”
Patriarch Bodhidharma glanced at him and said slowly: "The supreme magic method of the Buddhas is the result of the eternal time, the things that are difficult to do, the unbearable feelings, the diligence of many lifetimes, and the refinement of the tribulation. With such a little respect, a little courtesy, you want to get it? Hmph, what are you standing knee-deep in the snow? If you want to get my heart, unless it snows in the sky! ”
Red snow in the sky? It's impossible! In other words, there is no hope for the divine light to seek the supreme Bodhi.
Shenguang was hungry and cold, and at this moment, his heart, which was constantly twitching from despair, was even more painful. He can endure the wind and snow, but he can't accept the reality of being rejected by Dharma.
At this time, a pine tree with dense foliage on the cliff was bent downwards because there was too much snow on the canopy. The snow is still falling, and the snow on the trees is still increasing; It seemed that it could no longer bear the huge weight, and the whole tree could collapse at any moment...... With a snapping sound, one of the longest branches on the tree snapped. The entire tree was broken by the loss of balance, and at that moment it was violently shaken by vibrations, and the snow from the canopy fell one after another.
It discarded one of the strongest branches, but it bought the life of an entire tree.
A philosopher once said that for every arm a tree loses, it gains an eye.
Witnessing all this, the divine light was suddenly inspired: isn't it, the Buddha Shakyamuni and the ancestors of the past generations did not hesitate to kill themselves in order to seek the Dharma and enlightenment. The ancients could do it, why can't I?
In order to show his determination to seek the Dharma to the death, and to show his sincerity from the soul, Shenguang took out his ring knife and slashed at his left arm......
