Chapter 723 - Payment of Orders Tenth (II)

Shakyamuni Buddha first transmitted the Dharma Eye to the Venerable Mahakalya, the second transmission was the Venerable Ananda, the third transmission was the Venerable Shanna and the Venerable Xiu, the fourth transmission was the Venerable Upa Utharta, the fifth transmission was the Venerable Titaga, the sixth transmission was the Venerable Mishaka, the seventh transmission was the Venerable Bhasumita, the eighth transmission was the Venerable Buddha Carrying Nanti, the ninth transmission was the Venerable Fuda Mita, the tenth transmission was the Venerable Waki, the eleventh transmission was the Venerable Fu Na Ye Lu, the twelfth transmission was the Maming Master, the thirteenth transmission was the Venerable Kavimara, the fourteenth transmission was Nagarjuna, the fifteenth transmission was the Venerable Ganati Bharata, the sixteenth transmission was the Venerable Rahurata, Seventeen are Sangha Nanti, eighteen are Gayasyata, nineteen are Kumarata, twenty-one are Jayata, twenty-one are Bhashu Pantou, twenty-two are Maharatha, twenty-three are Helana, twenty-four are Master, twenty-five are Bhashasta, twenty-six are not as good as Mita, twenty-seven are Prajnatra, twenty-eight are Bodhidharma, twenty-nine are Huike, thirty-one are Sangcan, and thirty-one are Daoxin. The thirty-second generation is the master of Hongren, until I Huineng is the thirty-third generation ancestor. From the above-mentioned patriarchs, they all have their own inheritances. And you shall pass it on from generation to generation, and do not make mistakes. ”

In the second year of Xuanzong of the Tang Dynasty, that is, on the third day of the eighth month of the first year of the first year of Kaiyuan, the sixth patriarch had a meal at the Guoen Temple in Xinzhou, and told all the disciples: "You all sit down according to your position, and I want to say goodbye to you." ”

Fahai said, "What teachings did the monk leave behind that would make future generations fascinating and gain a glimpse of the Buddha nature?"

The Sixth Patriarch said, "Listen attentively! The charm of future generations, if they are able to recognize sentient beings, is Buddha-nature; If you can't recognize sentient beings, even after going through thousands of eons, it will be a rare opportunity to find Buddha. I am now teaching you to know the beings in your heart and to see the Buddha-nature in your heart. If you want to see a Buddha, you only need to be able to know sentient beings, because it is sentient beings who have lost their Buddha nature, not that Buddhas are trying to confuse sentient beings. If one's self-nature can be enlightened, all beings are Buddhas; If one's self-nature is lost, the Buddha is also sentient beings. If self-nature is equal, all beings are Buddhas; If one's nature is evil, then a Buddha is also a sentient being. If your hearts are insidious and not right, then the Buddha is in the midst of all beings; If one thought is equal and upright, it means that all beings have become Buddhas. We already have a Buddha in our hearts, and this self-nature Buddha is the true Buddha. If you don't have a Buddha mind, where can you find the true Buddha? Your own mind is a Buddha, so don't doubt it! There is nothing outside the mind that can be established, and all the dharmas are manifested from our hearts, so the scriptures say: 'When the mind is thought for a lifetime, all kinds of dharmas are born, and when the mind is destroyed, all kinds of dharmas are destroyed.' I'm leaving a verse to say goodbye to you, and it's called the True Buddha of Self-Nature. If future generations understand the purpose of this prayer, they will naturally be able to see their own true intentions and will naturally be able to attain the Buddha's path. ”

This verse says: "True as self-nature is the true Buddha, and the evil view of the three poisons is the demon king." When the evil is lost, the demon king lives in the heart, and when he is right, the true Buddha sits in the heart. Since the evil view of nature, the three poisons are born at the same time, that is, the demon king lives in the heart. With the right view, the three poisonous hearts are naturally removed, and then the demon king will truthfully become a true Buddha. The Dharmakaya, the retribution, and the incarnation are originally from one body. If one can see the three bodies in one's own nature, that is the bodhi cause of Buddhahood. The pure dharma nature is born from the incarnation, and the pure dharma nature is always in the incarnation. The purity of the Dharma nature enables the incarnation to walk on the right path, and the merits of rebirth in the future are endless. Sexual nature is born of pure nature, and the removal of sexual desire is pure nature. Each of them is far away from the five desires, and when he sees his pure nature, he is the true Buddha. In this life, if you can encounter the Dharma of Dun and suddenly realize your own nature, you will see the World-Honored One, and if you want to practice and seek to become a Buddha, you don't know where to seek the truth. If you can see the truth in your heart, the truth is the cause of becoming a Buddha. If you can't see your own nature and look for the Buddha outward, this thought is always a big idiot. Now that he has left the Dharma, if you want to save the world, you must first study yourself. Tell you, and those who will learn the Word, that it would be foolish not to do so. ”

After the Sixth Patriarch finished speaking, he told the people: "You must live in peace, after I am destroyed, you must not be as sad and weeping as the worldly people, and if you wear filial piety clothes when you receive condolences from others, you are not my disciples, nor are you the Dharma of the Buddha." As long as we can recognize our own mind, we can see that our own mind nature is originally non-moving, non-static, non-existent, non-existent. For lest you be deceived in your hearts and not understand what I mean, I charge you again, that you may see your nature. After I have perished, I will practice as I have been told, just as I had when I was alive. If you disobey my teachings, even if I am in the world, it will not do you any good. ”

Then he said a verse: "Stand still, do not cultivate goodness, be leisurely and do not create evil, cut off what you see and hear, have a quiet heart, and have no restraints and nothing to do." ”

After the sixth patriarch finished speaking, he sat upright until the third watch, and suddenly told his disciple, "I'm going." In an instant, there was silence. At that time, the strange fragrance filled the room, the sky was blank and the rainbow was even on the ground, the trees turned white, and the birds and animals all wailed.

In November, the bureaucrats of Guangzhou, Shaozhou, and Shaozhou, as well as their monks and lay disciples, vied with each other to welcome the true bodies of the Six Patriarchs to make offerings, and could not decide where to go. So he burned incense and prayed, saying, "Where the cigarette points is the place where the master is headed." ”

At that time, the cigarette kept drifting to Cao Xi. On November 13, the shrine of the six ancestors and the mantle handed down by the five ancestors were moved from the Xinzhou Guoen Temple to the Caoxi Baolin Temple for worship.

On July 25 of the following year, the body of the six ancestors came out of the shrine, and the disciple Fang Wei painted the true body of the six ancestors with incense mud. At this time, the disciples recalled that the six ancestors had said that "take the head", so they first surrounded the neck of the six ancestors with iron sheets and lacquered cloth, and then sent them into the tower for worship. When the Sixth Ancestor entered the tower, a white light suddenly appeared in the tower, which went straight to the sky, and only dissipated after three days. The Shaozhou Assassin reported the deeds of the six ancestors to the imperial court, and the emperor issued an edict to erect a monument to commemorate the Taoism of the six ancestors.

Master Huineng lived for 76 years, received five ancestral clothes at the age of 24, and was ordained at the age of 39, saying that the Dharma was born for a total of 37 years. There are forty-three people who have attained the Dharma, and the number of others who have attained enlightenment is unknown. The ancestral clothes passed down by the Bodhidharma Patriarch, the grinding treasure bowl given by Tang Zhongzong and the six ancestors shaped by the dialect, together with the props used by the master, will always be the treasure of Baolin Temple. The "Dharma Treasure Altar Sutra" is circulated to show the purpose of the Zen sect of the Dun Sect, to prosper the Three Jewels, and to benefit all sentient beings in general.
