Chapter 2: In the Mist
The sound of "creaking" became denser and denser. The hairs on Vane's whole body stood on end, and when he looked up, a dense fog tens of meters wide had formed on the wasteland a few meters in front of him, and the area seemed to be expanding. The fog was like a large cloud of white cotton, and it was impossible to see what was inside.
What the hell is in this fog? Vane held the sapphire staff in his hand to his chest, and his body unconsciously stepped back.
A rotting head poked out of the fog, half of its scalp with hair hanging from the side of the head, a cloudy eyeball hanging in front of the face on the left, and a black hole in the eye socket on the other. Immediately after that, the whole body under the head staggered and stood outside the thick fog.
This is a common undead creature, a zombie, except that this zombie appears to be much taller than a normal human, and the pointed ears on either side of the head indicate that it appears to be an elven zombie.
How can there be elves here? And they have become zombies? According to Vane's understanding, zombies are undead creatures that are usually resurrected by humans after death for some reason. Evil necrophils like to kill and resurrect people into zombies, and there will be fewer naturally formed and roaming zombies in the wild.
Seeing the zombies staggering towards him, Vane quickly looked around for a way out, as if the fog was thinner in the direction he came. Something more in the thick fog next to it began to crawl out with the smell of death, and a smell of decay came. Vane didn't think much of it, turned and ran in the opposite direction.
The fog seems endless, and the surrounding visibility does not exceed ten meters. The dense fog is not only the one just now, and Wayne has found more than a dozen pieces of dense fog all the way. And he found that as the undead creatures continued to emerge from the fog, the fog would gradually fade.
Suddenly, a dark shadow appeared in front of him, which was growing in size. Vane stopped, raised his staff, and looked nervously ahead. When the dark shadow approached, Vane realized that it was the fat first mate.
The fat first mate ran with his head up, and his fat body looked like he was about to fall to the ground at any moment. He saw Vane like a savior, and ran desperately to Vane's side.
"Help me! here...... It's all monsters......" The fat first mate said breathlessly, a frightened expression on his fat face. After speaking, he looked straight at the zombies approaching not far away, and slowly retreated, half of his leg already soaked in the seawater.
"Beware of something in the sea. Vane said nonchalantly. Sure enough, as soon as the words fell, the fat first mate jumped out of the water and stood on the shore as if he had seen a ghost.
Seeing that Vane didn't panic, the fat first mate also calmed down. This kid is a magician after all, and it seems that these monsters should not be his opponents, and my luck is really good, the fat mate thought triumphantly, and leaned next to Vane again.
Vane didn't know what the fat mate was having, and he began to carefully observe the situation in front of him. The dense fog in front of him had completely dissipated, and the monsters inside had been completely revealed, and there were more than a dozen of them, most of which were low-level undead creatures such as zombies and skeletons. They made a shuddering sound and slowly gathered around Vane and the fat mate.
Although it is not known if the undead will chase into the sea, hiding in the icy waters is obviously not a wise choice. If you leave here just as the fog rises, you may be able to avoid these undead creatures. But it was too late to say anything, and Vane saw that the skeleton archers in front of him had raised their bone bows and aimed at them.
Vane raised the sapphire staff, the inscription on the staff glowing with the whisper of the incantation. Then a halo of light flowed from the staff's body, and the entire staff was covered in a yellowish glow. In the next moment, the spell came to an abrupt end, and the staff erupted with a dazzling light, and the surrounding fog seemed to be dispelled.
The staff's glow vanished completely, and there seemed to be a slight magical fluctuation around Vane's body, an almost transparent membrane covering the surface of his body. This is the Dark Primary Magic, the Magic Shield, which requires only a small amount of Lizard Tail and Laurel.
Soon, Vane also cast a magic shield on the fat first mate.
"If you want to live, rush with me!" Vane whispered. At this time, the undead creatures that had just emerged from the dense fog had not completely dispersed, and Vane did not hesitate, and rushed directly towards the place where there were fewer undead creatures.
"Damn, this is suicide!" the fat first mate cursed through gritted teeth, but his feet had to follow quickly.
"Hum!" a bone arrow struck Vane in the chest, and the magic shield shook for a moment, causing a noticeable magic fluctuation around it, and the bone arrow snapped into several pieces in response.
The impact of the bone arrow made Vane's body stagnate. Vane felt that his mental power had improved significantly compared to before, and the magic shield he had cast before could not block such a blow.
The threat of death can make people burst into terrifying potential, and Vane quickly adjusts his body and moves quickly through the fog, nimble as a short-haired spotted cat.
The fat first mate, on the other hand, ran like a big ball rolling in a straight line, unable to completely avoid the undead.
"Boom!" the fat first mate crashed into the air of a lone skeleton. The skeleton was already a pile of scattered bones when it was in the air. The magic shield on the fat first mate's body also made a faint "buzzing" sound.
Although the fat first mate was slower, he walked in a straight line and didn't fall too far. But soon he was not so lucky.
The fat first mate "rolled into" a small group of undead creatures, and not only did he fail to knock the zombies and skeletons away, but he was knocked back a few steps and fell to the ground unsteadily. The frozen hard gravel ground had intimate contact with the fat body of the fat mate, and he screamed "oops" in pain.
Vane stopped when he heard the fat first mate behind him, he hesitated, gritted his teeth, and turned to run backwards.
The fog is endless, and the surrounding area is white. Vane ran nervously fast, dodging the undead creatures that suddenly appeared in front of him, while carefully searching for the cries of the fat first mate. Soon, a dark shadow appeared in the fog ahead.
"Ahhh......h Don't come here......" The fat first mate's thick voice became sharp and distorted with utter fear.
Vane stood still, his staff raised in both hands, and obscure incantations came out of his mouth. The inscription on the body of the staff lit up, and it seemed that electric light flowed in it. The currents from the fluctuations of magic dispelled some of the fog around Vane, his clothes rattling, his black hair fluttering in the wind, and his eyes full of determination.
Forked lightning rushed forward from the tip of the staff, and countless bursts of electricity struck a dark shadow in front of it. In a burst of "crackling" electricity and a slight explosion, the black shadows swayed and fell one by one.
Vane felt a little strange in his heart, although his spiritual power had grown a lot, but the effect of this fork lightning was close to that cast by the teacher who taught light magic in the magic academy, which was an intermediate magician certified by the Wizards' Guild.
Before he could think about it, a round figure ran up to Vane's side, gasping and saying, "Boy, I didn't expect your magic to be so powerful! Why don't we kill these disgusting monsters!" said the fat first mate's eyes with excitement.
Vane ignored the fat first mate, his black sword eyebrows tightly twisted together, as if he was thinking about something.
Hairy moans and joint grinding sounds can be heard from all directions, and zombies and normal skeletons, while not very threatening, will grab you and tear you into pieces once you lose your strength.
In the face of the endless mist, the feeling of despair in Vane's heart became stronger and stronger, and he forcibly suppressed this feeling, dragging his almost unconscious legs and rushing into the mist......
"Wait for me!" the fat first mate's excited voice turned frightened.
......
Vane kept running through the mist, his eyes blank, like a wind-up machine, his speed getting slower and slower......
At that moment, Vane felt the emptiness under his feet, and his body fell uncontrollably.
