382 Arrests
"Recently, we have received many reports alleging that Comrade Beria is suspected of violating the law and discipline and abusing his power. However, the contents of these letters, the comments and accusations against Comrade Beria did not correspond at all to what we knew about Comrade Beria, so I judged at that time that someone was plotting behind the scenes to slander and even to bring down Comrade Beria.
In order to prove Comrade Beria's innocence, our Central Supervisory Commission set up a special investigation committee to look for evidence that could prove Comrade Beria's innocence and to find out the mastermind behind the slander of Comrade Beria.
This result was obviously unexpected, but as chairman of the Central Supervisory Commission of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, I had to deal with this matter impartially on the basis of evidence. Therefore, in accordance with the procedure, I reported the relevant situation to the General Secretary, Comrade Stalin, and published the report of the investigation to the comrades at yesterday's meeting of the Secretariat of the Central Committee.
After a round of discussions, all the secretaries and comrades of the Secretariat of the CPC Central Committee have reached a consensus and made corresponding resolutions. Here, on behalf of the Secretariat of the CPSU Central Committee, I would like to formally announce the temporary dismissal of Comrade Beria from all posts, including members of the Politburo of the CPSU Central Committee and full members of the CPSU Central Committee, from the relevant departments. β
At a meeting of the Politburo of the Central Committee of the CPSU, Andrei Andreyevich Andreyev, who was also Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the CPSU Central Committee and Secretary of the Secretariat of the Central Committee of the CPSU (Andrei's third party), announced the handling of Beria by the Secretariat of the CPSU Central Committee, which meant that Beria's political career would come to an end.
When Beria, who was present at the meeting, heard Andreyev's words, he naturally knew what such a result meant, all the power and position he had achieved for many years of struggle finally came to naught at this time, and the part of all this was Andreyev, who sat opposite him, and Manturov, of course, including Stalin, who promoted him back then, but finally agreed to suspend Beria for investigation.
Now, no matter what Beria does, he can't change this fact. In history, when he faced the same occasion and similar situation, he dared to stretch out his hand and draw his gun, intending to shoot Khrushchev, Malenkov and others who "framed" him on the spot.
However, just as he was about to draw his gun, Manturov and Voroshilov, who were also present, were already one step ahead of him, holding their guns to his head. Almost at the same time, Vatutin, dressed in the uniform of a Soviet marshal, also walked in with a pair of heavily armed Soviet soldiers, pointed his gun at Beria's body, and if he made any rash move, he would be beaten into meat sauce in an instant.
"What are you going to do?"
Manturov held a pistol and said to Beria: "Comrade Beria, in view of the fact that some of your proven violations of law and discipline have violated the laws of the country, the Central Committee of the CPSU has decided to arrest you at the same time as dismissing you from all your posts. Please exercise restraint now and cooperate with the investigation of the relevant departments, because if you are indeed innocent, our Party Central Committee will absolutely restore your innocence and restore your personal freedom. β
"The Party Central Committee? How can you, a stinky child, be qualified to speak on behalf of the Party Central Committee? Don't think I don't know it's all your machination! Beria turned his gaze in the direction of the presidency and said to Stalin: "Joseph (Stalin), you must not believe Manturov, a child, for all the charges and letters against me were fabricated by him and Andreyev in order to drive me away and clear the way for him to seize power.
After my arrest, there will not be a 100% loyal person in the Politburo like me, and then they will carry out a coup d'Γ©tat, take you away and force you out of power as they did today.
So, the people who are really guilty are not me, but Manturov, Andreev and Voroshilov, and if you arrest me today, you will be the next target they will target. β
At the last moment, the cunning Beria could only try to exonerate himself with some irritating words, but Stalin saw too much of such tricks, and it was useless in front of Stalin, and in the end Beria did not escape the fate of being arrested, and could only be obediently taken away by the soldiers. (During the previous purges, almost everyone arrested in front of Stalin would have said that they were loyal to Stalin, and many would have shifted the blame to their political opponents.) οΌ
Soon after, the news of Beria's arrest soon reached the Ministry of Internal Affairs, but those senior officials of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, who had been loyal to Beria, not only did not take any countermeasures against him, but took the initiative to hand over some files that were unfavorable to Beria as evidence against Beria, and some people from the Ministry of Internal Affairs also wrote letters to the Party Central Committee, confessing everything they knew, hoping to be treated with "frankness and leniency".
Beginning the next day, the major propaganda organs of the Soviet Union, under the guidance of Katya, head of the Propaganda Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, also announced the news of Beria's arrest and published articles criticizing Beria. All textbooks and encyclopedias that refer to Beria began to be censored, erasing the image of Beria as some kind of "anti-rebel hero" and replacing it with the image of an evil character.
Unlike history, Beria's arrest this time was not charged with "betraying the Motherland, working for foreign capitalists, assembling a conspiracy of traitors hating the Soviet state, vainly attempting to seize state power, overthrow the workers' and peasants' Soviet system, restore capitalism and rebuild the capitalist state." There are no completely unreliable charges such as "brutal persecution of the Ordzhonikidze family".
As a matter of fact, Khrushchev's accusations against Beria in history are not credible at all, because there is no evidence that Beria ever colluded with foreign capitalist forces, let alone that he tried in vain to overthrow the workers' and peasants' Soviet system, or even to restore capitalism and rebuild the capitalist state, and thus "vainly attempt to seize state power."
As for the "persecution of the Ordzhonikidze family", it is even more unreliable, when Grigory Ordzhonikidze (nickname: Sergo) died, Beria was still the secretary of the Georgian Party Committee, while Ordzhonikidze was a member of the Politburo and the Minister of Heavy Industry of the Soviet Union, and the relationship between the two was also very iron (well, Ordzhonikidze was willing to stay at Beria's house every time he returned to Georgia).
However, the fact that the historical crimes are unreliable does not mean that Beria has not committed any serious crimes. It is a fact that he abused his power, killed innocents indiscriminately, and deliberately persecuted Starostin and others, as did he used his power ** many women (including Soviet actress Tatiana Okunneskaya). These charges alone are fully sufficient to arrest and convict him.
There may be some people who think that these stains on Beria are insignificant compared to his "contributions", but in history, except for the fact that he presided over the development of the atomic bomb and served as a member of the National Defense Committee during World War II, there is nothing that can be regarded as "contributions", not to mention that he is not the only one who can do these jobs well.
In the plane where Manturov is located, Beria not only did not contribute much to the Great Patriotic War (at least compared to Manturov's contributions), but even the credit for the development of the atomic bomb was "robbed" by Manturov, and as a result, when Stalin decided to arrest Beria, he was like shooting a mosquito to death, without regret.
