Chapter 48: Dark Mercenaries
Ian didn't quite understand what Danes meant, but if it was a little brighter, he could see Sid's pale face.
The rules of the mercenary guilds all over the continent are not strict, after all, every mercenary is in the business of fighting for money with their lives. Making small mistakes, unclean hands and feet, desecrating the employer's property, unilaterally abandoning the entrustment, etc., is at most a demotion penalty. However, occasionally, mercenaries will be hunted down or hunted down by the guild for bounty announcements. Usually these people are people who have committed very serious crimes, and most of these crimes have long gone beyond the rules of the guild and have violated the laws of the state and the lord.
These mercenaries were removed from the guild, but they still received commissions from shady places. Someone spits on them, and someone will find them. They do not conform to the principles of the Killers' Guild or are not members of the Thieves' Guild, wandering outside of any organization and becoming outlaws. They will do anything to survive.
"Before I came in, I thought that there was probably a master among us who was being searched by the guards. I've heard your name, Ian. Seeing you use your psychic powers, I'm pretty sure. Daynes continued to bother to peel off the usable materials from the corpse carp, and said nonchalantly, "It's a pity that I didn't receive your bounty. But the others are really unlucky, not only will they pay an extra 20 gold coins for you, but they will probably lose their lives in this labyrinthine drain. β
"It's them who want to come, and it's they who want to run, and it's not up to us. Sid said coldly beside him.
Dayns ignored him and continued: "This guy is also unlucky, he wanted to make a fortune by relying on this waterway, but he didn't expect to encounter demonic beasts under Najian City - but I didn't expect it, what about you?"
Ian couldn't hear what he was hearing, and subconsciously leaned over to look at his hand. A strong bloody breath came to his nose, and Ian hurriedly turned his face sideways, and spit out with a "wow". The corpse carp was cut off by the waist, and the body of the "snake's head" was bitten to pieces, and the body was also found with Dayns's autopsy.
"Do you want teeth?" the corpse carp still had a head left, and Dayns remembered something, "I'll keep it if I don't, and it's quite sharp to bite a big living person like this." β
Ian was on the sidelines, waving at him as he endured the nausea that hit his stomach.
"Okay, these are yours," Dayns walked over and dropped a bag, "There are three cores, it's not good to divide them, I'll take two, and I'll give you some more to compensate for the bones and scales." β
Ian wiped his mouth and reluctantly said "thank you".
Dayns packed his things, picked up his scimitar, and was about to head down the passage.
Ian's hand was on his shoulder, "Wait," he said, "who did you hear my name say?"
Daynes turned around and showed an incredulous expression: "Your name is rumored among the dark mercenaries, but you yourself can't guess who the enemy is?" and then he laughed, "Then when you were killed by one of us, don't you even know why you died?"
Ian thought of the Falcon. ReginβThat makes sense, he lost his target in the Glazed Grove and searched for him through the Dark Mercenaries.
"Remember?" Dayns looked into Ian's eyes and smiled, "Surely something." What secrets were discovered by accident, what information was stolen, and what important things were taken away from the other party...... It's all possible. The Killer Guild is very troublesome, and it only kills, not kidnaps. β
Ian's eyes lit up: "Kidnapping?"
"Kidnapping, 'bring the kid named Ian back to Black Eagle City'. β
"Understood. β
"So, can we go find the exit? before the second corpse carp or some strange monster appears?"
"Let's go. β
Dayns turned sharply and walked forward. Sid saw that the light source was gradually moving away with him, so he quickly pulled Ian and followed with a bag full of corpse carp materials.
Sid was worried all the way about whether there would be other monsters, and walked away in fear for an unknown distance, only to hear Dayns say "There is" in front of him. Then they saw a flash of light sliding towards the hollow of the wall. With a "clang", the gate of the waterway collapsed in response.
"Gone. Daynes turned and waved at them, and walked out.
By the time Ian and Sid got out and looked again, there was no longer half a figure around.
In front of them was a downward slope, and the traces of the dirt being washed out by the water could be faintly seen. The steep slope was cluttered with trees, grass, and shrubs, and it was still dark to see where the end was in the distance.
Sid glanced back, and there were torches not far away, some still moving slowly. It was supposed to be the guard on the walls of Najian City. He breathed a sigh of relief: "What shit luck!"
Ian stepped up from behind him and peered down the hillside, as if he could see something through the pitch black woodland.
"We're out, Ian," Sid was a little excited, "look, I said we could." β
"Like you said," Ian's voice was flat and tired, "Long live shit luck." β
Sid looked around, it was still pitch black, but the weather was clear, and the positions of the stars and moon showed him the way to go.
"Let's climb to the bottom of this slope and keep going, it should be the boundaries of the Federation - we're already on the west side of Najian City!" Sid gestured in that direction, "We'll be in Babel soon, take a good shower, wash this stinky mud, have a drink or two, and sleep well on the clean beds in the inn." Listen, the city of Babel, although it is very close to the city of Najian, is already a federal state. You don't have to worry about the falcons again, they don't dare to do it here. β
The two began to climb down. The slope is very difficult to walk, steep, and overgrown with a variety of trees and shrubs. From time to time, Ian had to stop and rest. Each time, Sid would watch the city behind him vigilantly, fearing that the sound of the sewers would alarm the guards.
"About that Daens," Ian asked suddenly, "what do you think?"
"Dark mercenaries are all outlaws and have no bottom line. Sid still had a feeling of apprehension, "Didn't you hear what he said?" β
"I know," Ian said, "I mean, who posted a commission about me in the Dark Mercenaries. β
"Who else could it be, that falcon," Sid steadied himself, holding on to a dead tree that had become a dead tree, "or the master behind him!"
"Well, I thought so too. β
"What are you going to do in the future? I heard that Babel is not bad, do you want to stay there for a while?"
Seeing that Ian didn't answer, Sid called out again, "Ian?"
"I'm here. There's no way to stop, Sid. Ian's tone suddenly became sad, mixed with a hint of indignation, "I'm not going to stop." β
Sid stopped and turned to look at him. Obscured by the shadows of the trees, only Ian's vague silhouette could be discerned swaying through the forest.
"I can only go on and on, to the end of my destiny. Ian's voice came low from the bushes to Sid's right, "I don't know what's there, but at least I've understood now that I can't stop." β
"May fate ......," Sid looked up at the sky through the trees, and suddenly changed his words, "May the stars guide you." β
The two climbed all the way down the hillside and cliff all the way west, and did not dare to take the road when they reached the flat land. Anyway, before dawn, the gates of the Federation were closed, but there was enough time to cross the forest. Finally, when the sky behind them was revealed, the two came to the border fortress of the Western Multinational Federation.
Sid looked at Ian, his face was covered in dust, dried mud, and his clothes were covered in dust, and a lilac liquid, possibly the blood of the corpse carp. There are also many places where the clothes and pants are scratched by the branches of the trees in the mountains and forests and the stone chips on the cliffs, which is not much better. But Ian's right arm was swollen throughout, with a large reddish-purple patch covering the epidermis.
"Your hand ......," Sid whispered, "is there something wrong with the bones?"
"Maybe," Ian looked down, "and we'll talk about it in a minute." β
Sid looked at Ian and felt a little strange. He suddenly remembered a sentence he had read: When a man comes out of a storm, he is no longer the same person.
Seeing that the caravan was already lined up outside the city gate, Ian hurriedly beckoned Sid to join the group.
The slow progress of the team made Sid restless, fearing that there would be pursuers coming from behind. Ian's attention was drawn to the exotic architecture that was getting closer. Since mastering the ability of the psychic mind, observation has become a habit of his life. This strange world made his eyes widen.
As the day grew brighter, more caravans and travelers arrived, forming a longer line behind them. Two subhuman merchants chattered behind Ian's back, complaining about the slow entry, the difficult journey, and the difficulty of running the trade.
"It's slow, we've been waiting on the side of the nearby avenue for a long time. A languid voice said.
"I should have camped right outside the city gates. Another voice answered.
"God knows how slow it is now......"
"It's not the monsters that are making trouble!" another voice said angrily, "The world is good, and it won't be peaceful again." β
"You've recently encountered Warcraft?"
"Phew, my life is a great blessing. However, the red hair of the Chamber of Commerce met and almost died on the road. I think the next time I go out, I'd better go to the Mercenary Guild and find a few bodyguards. β
"You said it well, why are there more Warcraft?" the lazy voice seemed to be intrigued by Warcraft, "And it's not just the Empire that happens like this. β
"How do I know, but ......," the first voice replied, "I see that the mercenary's business is going to pick up again, and I heard that the mercenary guild has recently recruited a lot of service reception personnel to reactivate the mercenary class system. We're in trouble, and the profits have to be recalculated, alas......"
Hearing this, Sid's eyes lit up, and then he looked at Ian with a strange expression.
Ian knew that Sid had a lot of ideas, so he must have thought of something. Sure enough, he didn't need to ask, Bing Youzi spoke: "The reactivation of the class system of the Mercenary Guild shows that the level of Warcraft activity has reached a fairly high level......"
"It's not a good thing, why are you so happy......"
"It shows that those who are mercenaries can live a life of unlimited scenery, good food and drink!"
"So what?"
"Aren't you impressed?"
"Hmm......" When it came to eating, the two of them felt that their stomachs were empty. After tossing and turning all night without eating anything, I suddenly became uncomfortably hungry.
"Your psychic powers," Sid whispered, "This is a multinational federation, so you don't have to worry about any identity issues, and maybe if you go to the Mercenary Guild, you can meet more psychic masters like Daens!"
"You're going to make me a mercenary?"
"Let's find out if we can drive off the elves, the caravan escort at close range, these simple tasks......" Sid urged urging, "Don't worry, I'll be with you!" he added dejectedly, "The most important thing is that after we pay the fare, there are not a few silver coins left......"
"Ahh
"What's wrong with you?"
"The head of the snake is dead, and the money everyone paid is still on him! Dayns just now decomposed the corpse carp cleanly, why didn't he see half a gold coin?"
"Well, I didn't think about that either...... He must have been taken away, and he told you that dark mercenaries are not fuel-efficient lamps!"
Ian sighed regretfully.
"It's useless to think about this, how about it, go into the city to treat your arm in a while, and then go to the Mercenary Guild to have a look?"
Ian hesitated, and before Sid could say anything more, he replied, "Then let's go and have a look." β
