Chapter 47: Ambush
"Catch up," Ian seemed to push Sid hard, "take my sword, it should fall nearby." β
In the darkness, Sid sensed a strange anger in Ian's tone. Perhaps this is a common occurrence, and soldiers sometimes go into battle and suddenly become angry and overcome their fears. But Ian ...... Sid shook his head inwardly, Ian wasn't that type, he wasn't angry or terrified. You know, Ian was the first to draw his sword when the corpse carp appeared.
But now is not the time to think about these things. Without hesitation, he answered, reaching out and groping his way across the dust, sand, and gravel ground. Soon, his fingers touched something cold.
He quickly took the hilt of the steel longsword in his hand and said, "Don't faint, or I won't find you when I come back." β
"I'll be there then," Ian probably nodded, his voice weak but resolute, "Go, can't let it run away!"
In front of Sid, there was boundless darkness, and the whole world seemed to be left with only a faint blue-purple glimmer in the distanceβthat was his destination. How far is it? There was no reference, and he couldn't make out it. The corpse carp fled with its back to them, and the glimmer of light in the eye sockets and gill slits was not enough for him to track.
Regardless of whether there was a stumbling block under his feet, he did his best to overcome his instinctive apprehension and fear, forcing himself to run in the dark, praying that his feet would not kick the huge rocks.
Running in the darkness where you can't see anything is not an easy task. The fear of darkness and the inability to know the environment in his heart is like a stubborn mule, and no matter how Sid whips it with the whip of courage, his legs always unconsciously slow down. At this moment, a blue-purple glimmer suddenly went out around the corner in the distance.
Sid stopped, panting, his sword-carrying palms drenched in sweat - he held it too tightly.
"Well," he sighed to himself, "at least we know there's a fork in the road," he repeated reluctantly, "well." β
Ian, who was struggling to move against the wall, heard footsteps coming towards him in front of him, and he shouted, "Sid?"
"Yes. Sid answered, "Can you stand up?"
Ian didn't answer, just asked eagerly, "Did you catch up with it?"
"No, I can't catch up. β
"Damn!" Ian's muffled sound of fists slamming against the wall came from Ian's direction, "Damn, you should catch up with it!"
Sid came closer, and Ian's anger was strange to him, but he could confirm it was anger.
"It's okay, it's hurt. Sid tried to reassure him.
"It's okay?!" The young man's voice rose sharply, and the flame of spiritual power lit up again in his eyes, reflecting a pair of eyes full of anger in the darkness, "If we can't kill it now, we won't be able to get out alive!"
Sid was a little caught off guard by his state, but still said calmly: "No, we can, it's hurt, if it dares to show up again......"
The spiritual light in Ian's eyes suddenly went out, and the young man's voice asked coldly, "Can you still see me now?"
"I can't see. β
"Yes, you can't see it! That guy just needs to close his eyes and wait for us to walk into his mouth! Or hide somewhere we can't see, remember where we are, and get close to us in the dark, and we're dead." β
"Ian ......"
"It's more familiar with this place than we are, it can find us with its eyes closed!" Ian roared excitedly in the darkness, "and we're going to have to walk back and forth here a few times, if not a dozen times, looking for that damn exit!"
"Ian. Sid tried to interrupt him.
"Just now, that was the only chance to ensure our survival, and you let it go?!"
"It's too dark for me to catch up with him, Ian," Sid's voice was calm but incredibly persuasive, "you should calm down." β
Ian didn't speak again, there was silence in the darkness, only the sound of water near and far.
In the middle of the night, Ian's voice came: "I'm sorry. β
"It doesn't matter. Sid quickly replied, "It's too dark in here, but there should be a wayβcan you still embody Zack?"
"Yes. Immediately, Zack's spirit reappeared.
They let Zach go to the front, and the psychic spirit with some faint blue glow. It's tiny, but it's better than the darkness that you can't reach. It was also safer for spirits to find their way, after all, they didn't know how many intersections they would have to walk through that could easily be ambushed. It's just that Ian can't let Zach act separately from himself, but is like a shadow, taking the same steps as himself, and even holding on to the wall and touching the corner of his clothes, these small actions will be completely replicated.
Soon, they came to the first fork in the road. With the glimmer of light emanating from Zack's body, Sid marked the wall with his sword, and they waded across the horizontal waterway to continue their journey. Luckily, they hadn't gone far before they found the road at its end. A mesh cover is crisscrossed by strips of metal that cover a large, collapsed water outlet.
Turning back to the junction, Sid drew a horizontal line at the top of the previous arrow mark, then made a new mark and walked in the direction of the new mark. In this way, they marked the path they had traveled in turn, and limited the distance they could explore - after all, the head of the snake had said that they were not far from the exit, and there was no need to push further.
In the darkness, Sid felt Ian's breathing getting heavier and heavier beside him.
"Ian," Sid asked, "you just got that beating, are you okay?"
"It should be fine. The boy replied briefly, and after a moment of hesitation, he added, "I don't have much strength except for the pain in my right arm." β
"Would you like to take a break?"
"No," Ian firmly rejects the proposal, "to find an exit as soon as possible." β
As he spoke, Ian's peripheral vision suddenly felt the waterway on his right light up.
He didn't even turn his head to know what it was: blue-purple light, two glowing targets.
Sid and Zack flew at the same time, but he knew it was too late. The corpse carp opened its large mouth, which was on his right hand, as if it could be touched by reaching out as soon as he stretched out his hand. He could even see the glow of the core of the monster's throat shine from the depths of its throat, illuminating two rows of tiny teeth.
At this moment, a bright and whitish blue psychic power suddenly appeared on the top of the passage. I only heard a loud shout, and the spiritual power turned into a half-moon shape and slashed towards the corpse carp.
There was a loud bang, accompanied by a splash of water, and the corpse carp was cut off by the half-moon-shaped psychic force, cutting into the back where Flynn shot through the scales.
Ian and Sid stared in amazement at what was happening in front of them.
"You didn't do it, did you?" asked Sid in a low voice.
"Of course not. β
"Is this psychic power?" Sid looked up at where the arc flew out and asked, "Is that kind of psychic power that flies out?"
"I don't know......" Ian had also heard that psionic powers could be used to enhance the power of weapon slashes, as well as the ability to attack beyond the distance limitations of melee weapons. But if you don't see it with your own eyes, you really can't believe its power.
Something seemed to fall from the top of the passage, and with a bang, it splashed Sid in the face. Suddenly, some points of psychic light gathered around him, becoming brighter and brighter, emitting a soft light, which acted as illumination. The glimmer illuminated a figure, and Ian saw that he was about the same size as himself, much thinner than Sid, and was tucking a massive scimitar more than half a man tall into the pocket behind his back.
The man seemed to look at the monster's corpse, then turned to Ian and said, "One and a half." β
"One and a half?" Ian was inexplicable.
"Too little?" the man asked rhetorically.
"No, I didn't understand what you meant. β
"The trophies, the cores, scales, and bones of the corpse carp, can be sold for a lot of money. The man said coldly, "I don't know this?"
"I don't know," Ian admitted, "I'm not a Monster hunter or a mercenary. β
The man looked at him, "But can you fight with your psychic powers?"
"It's not even close. β
The man seemed to look at Ian, but quickly continued to focus on the stripping.
"Your psychic power can fly away from your weapon," Ian leaned over to him, but kept a certain distance, "and it seems to be powerful...... How?"
"Hmm...... Trade Secrets. The man's head didn't turn, but Ian saw that the man's young face was covered with scars.
Sid also turned to the side of the corpse carp and said, "Just now, thank you for making a move." β
"No thanks," the man still stared intently at the job at hand, "the arrow he had pierced through the hard scales on the back of the corpse carp - the scales on the back were especially hard, and I needed to start from there, and I had just served as bait to get a single blow." So, one and a half. He glanced at Sid and said, "You didn't help much, you didn't have your share!"
Sid crossed his hands in front of his chest, as if he had turned back into the soldier oil, and replied in a strange manner: "It's okay, it's okay, I'm with him, we're like brothers, what's what's mine is mine, and what's mine is his." But since you've been by our side from the beginning, wouldn't it be good to strike early? It's been so hard to hurt us, and if we accidentally get killed by the corpse carp, wouldn't you have to feel guilty for the rest of your life?"
The man didn't answer, but said coldly: "Like a brother, a brother who can't help at all, fortunately it's not mine." β
Sid listened to him, and it seemed that he had been there since the beginning of the battle, and now it seemed that he had been on the sidelines the whole time.
"I'm just waiting for the best moment. The man seemed to know what Sid was thinking, "After all, I don't really need to explain to you, you died because of your lack of strength, and I won't feel guilty." β
Sid lowered his face and said no more, and walked sullenly to the head of the corpse carp. It was the first time he had observed a ferocious beast so closely.
"By the way, I'm Ian," the boy said, "what about you?"
This was the first psychic person Ian met besides a witch, a warrior, and not only was he not his own enemy, but he could even say that he had teamed up to kill a demonic beast.
The man didn't look up: "Ian, real name or fake name?"
"Real name. β
The warrior finally stopped what he was doing and got up to look at him. In the dim light beside him, Ian saw that his eyes were dark and shining, as if he could see straight into his own heart.
"I'm Daynes," he grinned, baring his white teeth, "a dark mercenary. You shouldn't have told me your real name. β
