Wai Gong asked: What is politics? Confucius replied: The so-called government means righteousness. If the monarch himself is right, then the common people will follow suit. The actions of the king are the example of the common people. What the king does not do, the common people will naturally not do. Wai Gong asked again: Should I go to politics? Confucius replied: There is a difference between husband and wife, father and son, and respect for each other, and if these three things are done well, all other things will be done well.

Wai Gong said: Although the widow is not talented, he is very willing to listen to the way to do these three things well. Can you tell us about that? Confucius replied: The ancients regarded caring for others as very important. In order to love others, courtesy is the most important thing. To be polite, respect is the most important thing. To be uncompromising, the most important thing is to be dusk. The dusk is the most important! The marriage of the Son of Heaven or the princes is the great dusk, and when the day of the great dusk comes, you must wear a top hat and wear a dress to marry in person, which is to express the meaning of kissing her. The so-called kissing her is actually respecting her. Therefore, a gentleman regards respect as a pro, and putting aside respect is also putting aside a pro. Without love, there is no kiss, and without respect, there is no righteousness. Love and respect are probably the fundamental issues of politics!

Wai Gong said: The widow wants to interject a word, wearing a top hat and a dress to marry in person, does this seem too grand? Confucius replied solemnly and movingly: The purpose of the great dusk is to match the good deeds of the two families, to pass on the ancestors, to inherit the cause of the ancestors, to become the master of heaven and earth, the temple, and the community, how do you say that this is too grand? Wai Gong said: If it weren't for the loneliness, I wouldn't have heard of you. I still want to ask, but I don't know how to phrase it, so please continue.

Confucius went on to say: If yin and yang do not intersect with each other, all things will not be born. The great dusk is to pass on the ancestry and inherit the inheritance of eternity, how can you say that this is too grand? Confucius went on to say: After the dusk, in the family, the husband and wife jointly presided over the ritual of the temple sacrifice, and their status was enough to match the gods of heaven and earth; At the imperial court, the husband and wife jointly issued decrees, which were enough to establish the upper and lower levels; If a courtier makes a mistake, he can correct it with courtesy; The monarch has made a mistake in politics, but he must put etiquette in the first place, and etiquette is probably the foundation of politics.

Confucius went on to say: In the past, when the three generations of virtuous men were in power, they must respect their wives and sons, which is very reasonable. The so-called wife is a housewife who supports her parents before and after her death, do you dare to disrespect it? The so-called son is the offspring of his parents, dare not respect it? A gentleman does everything he can to respect, but respecting himself is the most important thing. Because you are the branches and leaves born of your parents, do you dare not respect them? Not being able to respect oneself means hurting one's parents. Hurting one's parents is hurting one's own roots. Hurt your own roots, and the branches and leaves will die. Self, wife, and son are also symbols of the people.

From respecting oneself to respecting oneself to respecting the people themselves, from respecting one's own wives to respecting the wives of the people, and from respecting one's own sons to respecting the sons of the people, if the king can do these three things, then everyone in the world can be respected. This is what the former king did, and if he can do this, the country will be easy to govern.

Wai Gong asked: What does it mean to respect yourself? Confucius replied: If a gentleman says something wrong, the common people will make a holy decree; When a gentleman does something wrong, the common people will also take it as an example. If a gentleman can not say the wrong thing and do the wrong thing, the common people will be respectful without waiting for orders. By doing this and that, you are able to respect yourself. Being able to respect oneself is to bring glory to one's parents' face.

Wai Gong asked: What does it mean to win glory on the face of your parents? Confucius replied: The so-called gentleman is a kind of good name for people, and the people gave him such a title, saying that he is the son of a gentleman, which means that his parents have become gentlemen, and this is to win a good name for his parents. Confucius went on to say: The ancients regarded their lovers as the most important thing in their politics. If you can't love your neighbor, you will harm yourself, and you won't be able to protect yourself. If you can't protect yourself, you can't live and work in peace. If you can't live and work in peace and contentment, you will inevitably complain. If you complain about others, you will not be able to achieve yourself.
