Before the war, our army, through detailed battlefield reconnaissance, was already well aware of the deployment of the enemy in Laoshan.

The enemy in the Laoshan area was the 2nd Battalion of the 122nd Regiment of the 313th Division of the Annam Army, and the 22nd Company was on the main peak of Laoshan and No. 50, No. 52, No. 54, and the high ground, and the company headquarters was stationed on the No. 50 Height, and there were observation platforms and mortar positions. Heights 48, 49 and 76 are the 7th Infantry Company. The battalion headquarters, the 5th Infantry Company, and the 24th Firearms Company were deployed in the area from Heights 1072 to Heights 74. The area on the south side of the 968 Heights is the 122nd Regiment, which belongs to the 14th Mortar Company.

Having experienced a long war, Annam has studied the battle in the mountains and jungles.

The defending enemy built a large number of trenches and bunkers on the heights of Laoshan, and the front was equipped with circular barbed wire, arc-shaped anti-infantry trenches and steep artificial cutting walls. Around the position, irregular wide-frontal, large-depth anti-infantry minefields were laid, and a solid defensive position system combining bunkers, tunnels, barbed wire, and various fortifications was formed.

With artillery firepower as the backbone, all kinds of firearms form a firepower network that combines curved and straight, far and near, light and heavy, light and dark, side-fire, and reverse strikes, and is configured into a dense firepower system that intersects the upper, middle, and lower layers. It constitutes a support point defense system that can fight, hide, and live, and is convenient for independent combat and long-term defense.

Because the main peak of the old mountain and the highlands are steep and straight, the slope is generally above sixty or seventy degrees, which is easy to defend and difficult to attack. At the same time, due to the limited geographical area, the attack force is limited and cannot be deployed. Fighting on such terrain is a severe test for the attacking troops.

In January 1984, the 118th Regiment of the 40th Division of the 14th Army of the Chinese Army was given the combat mission of capturing Laoshan.

At 3 a.m. on 28 April, our division and regimental artillery groups carried out fire preparations on the main peak of Laoshan Mountain and various high grounds. After the end of the firepower preparations, the battle of Laoshan officially began.

The 118th Regiment of our army was the first to attack the 1st Battalion, and they were tasked with interspersing and dividing them. Due to the unfamiliar terrain and dense vegetation, there were no roads between the adjacent heights, and there were no guides, the troops were not interspersed in place, and they were directly intercepted by enemy artillery fire, and the interspersed troops suffered heavy casualties.

The attacks of the 1st battalion and each company on the 1072 heights, 76 heights, 1214 heights, 78 heights, and 51 heights were all suppressed by enemy fire or directly blocked by artillery fire, and the troops suffered more than 50 casualties.

The attack of the 1st Battalion was blocked, and the confrontation with the defending enemy was in a state of confrontation, and each company was in a dilemma.

The start was unfavorable, but it did not shake the determination of the 118th Regiment to recapture Laoshan. At 6:30 a.m. on April 28, a round of artillery fire from our army and division artillery groups completely covered the main peak of Laoshan. As soon as the artillery preparations ended, the general attack of the 118th Regiment of the Army on the main peak of Laoshan quickly began under the unfavorable conditions of the first battle.

The 2nd Battalion, which attacked from the west side of Laoshan, under the cover of artillery fire, the 5th Company of the Main Assault Company, like a sharp knife, first attacked the enemy on the 21st Heights. The 3rd Platoon and 9th Squad were tasked with opening up passages to minefields, and they fired two detonating index mines, but the detonating cords were blocked by the dense jungle and exploded in the air, and the mines were not detonated.

It was only 1 minute before the troops launched the attack, and at the critical moment, Han Yuekui, the squad leader who was a member of the team, resolutely ordered the whole squad to step on the thunder with flesh and blood to make a bloody way for the general attack.

Han Yuekui was the first to jump into the minefield, and after advancing 50 meters, he stepped on the mine, and the mine exploded continuously "boom" and "boom". Han Yuekui's left calf and right foot were blown off, and his jaw, head, and chest were seriously injured, and he died a heroic death. Under the inspiration of the squad leader, the soldiers of the 9th squad went forward one after another, and opened a 200-meter-long attack path for the attack troops with their young lives!

The fearless sacrifice spirit of the soldiers of Class 9 shocked the soldiers of the attacking troops.

The horn of the general attack sounded, and the follow-up troops quickly passed through the minefield on the life passage opened up by the soldiers of the 9th squad with their flesh and blood. The soldiers shouted the slogan of "avenging their comrades-in-arms", and quickly destroyed six firepower points on the periphery of the main peak of the old mountain with the momentum of thunder and thunder, and captured the No. 21 and No. 52 heights.

At this time, the main peak of the old mountain was completely exposed in front of our attacking troops.

The enemy guarding the main peak of Laoshan was extremely panicked, and they quickly concentrated their fire to suppress our 5th company. The officers and men of the 5th Company marched forward one after another, unstoppable, they passed through the enemy's dense fire network blockade, climbed a steep slope of 60 or 70 degrees, and twice attacked the main peak, but they were crushed by a rain of bullets and grenades, and the troops suffered heavy casualties.

After adjusting the deployment, the company commander called our artillery group to fire a salvo at the main peak first.

When the artillery fire was extended, Zhang Daquan, deputy company commander, led the 2nd platoon, with four machine gunners holding machine guns to open the way, and the eight battle groups launched a centripetal attack on the main peak at the same time in the prescribed direction. The infantry and artillery coordination was tightly integrated, and the enemy defending Laoshan had not yet reacted from the artillery fire, and our main attack platoon had approached the front of the position, and the enemy's tight defense system in Laoshan was quickly torn open.

At 8:24, the 5th Company made great sacrifices and occupied the surface position of the main peak of the old mountain. There were only 12 soldiers left in the 2nd platoon of the main attack platoon, and the deputy company commander Zhang Daquan died heroically.

After the 5th Company attacked the surface position of the main peak of Laoshan Mountain, the enemy's deep artillery group quickly covered the surface position of the main peak with intensive artillery fire. Battalion commander Li Xianwen urgently ordered the 4th Company to join the battle, and the 5th and 4th Companies launched a fourth attack on the main peak side by side, but they were all defeated. The 6th Company was also suppressed by enemy fire on the 50th heights during the assault, and the battle on the main peak was temporarily deadlocked.

The 3 battalion, which attacked from the eastern side of the old mountain, cleared mines in the preparation of artillery fire and blew up the enemy barbed wire. After the attack was launched, the 8th Company of the Main Assault Company took the lead and captured Heights 56 in only 15 minutes. They quickly seized the enemy's fighter planes, which had no time to adjust their deployment, and launched a continuous attack on the enemy's core position, No. 54 Height, on the eastern side of Laoshan Mountain, without giving the enemy a chance to breathe.

The enemy on the positions on the southeast and north sides of Heights 54 simultaneously fired heavily at 8 companies, and the enemy artillery fire also frantically blocked them. The 8th Company was pinned down in the saddle on the southeast side of Heights 56 and 54, with more than 20 casualties. Company Commander Peng Yanliang decisively ordered the 2nd and 3rd platoons to attack the position on the southeast side of Heights 54 along the enemy's patrol channel, and finally bypassed the minefield and seized Heights 54.

After the 8th Company occupied Heights No. 54, the enemy took advantage of their unstable foothold and suppressed our attacking troops with crossfire from the bunkers on the north and west sides, and the company's casualties increased. Company commander Peng Yanliang immediately ordered the 1st platoon to suppress the enemy's position on the west flank, and the 2nd platoon and the 3rd platoon attacked the position on the north side in two directions. After a bloody battle, the 3rd and 2nd Platoons used 82 recoilless guns and rocket artillery to blow up the enemy's ground protection one by one, and captured the position on the north side of Heights 54 at 9:40.

The attack was successful, and Peng Yanliang ordered the troops to quickly attack the No. 53 heights in one go. The enemy pillboxes on Heights 53 were blown up one by one, and the troops quickly occupied this heights.

The 9th Company attacked on Heights 50, and between Heights 58 and 57, encountered enemy artillery blockades. Liu Chaoshun, the acting platoon commander of the 2nd platoon of the main attack platoon, was seriously wounded, and the company commander Li Yucheng ordered Shi Guangzhu, the leader of the 4th squad, to command the main attack platoon and seize the commanding heights of the No. 57 heights. At this time, the two machine-gun bunker firing points on the left side of the No. 57 heights, and the anti-aircraft machine guns in the enemy's main fort on the main peak of the old mountain, suppressed the 2nd platoon to the death, and many soldiers died.

Shi Guangzhu commanded the 2nd and 3rd platoons, braving the dense rain of bullets, alternately covering, accurately blowing up the enemy's bunker, seizing the No. 57 heights, and quickly advancing to the No. 50 heights.

Heights 50 is composed of 3 mountain bags, located on the east side of the main peak of the old mountain, with 1 enemy company on it, with trenches, anti-infantry wall cutting, minefields and barbed wire in the front, the trenches are connected with the communication trenches, and the anti-aircraft machine guns, heavy machine guns, and recoilless guns form a crossfire network.

Li Jinping, deputy company commander, decided to implement frontal containment and flank attack. Shi Guangzhu was leading the 2nd platoon as the main attack platoon, the enemy blocked their way with dense artillery fire, Shi Guangzhu was injured in the left arm by the shell, pierced the eardrum, passed out, and insisted on directing the battle after waking up. The 2nd and 1st platoons, under the leadership of Li Jinping, used mine openers to open up a 50-meter-long minefield, and the troops crossed the minefield and climbed a ladder to climb two or three meters high to cut down the wall of the anti-infantry area.

Shi Guangzhu led the 2nd platoon to attack the second line of trenches, and they continued to use 82 recoilless guns or squad rockets to destroy enemy fire points, Ming Forts and Hidden Bunkers one by one. The troops attacked quickly, and at this moment, the enemy threw a volley of grenades. In the "boom" explosion, Shi Guangzhu was wounded again, a piece of shrapnel into the throat, and a piece of shrapnel embedded in his left knee.

Iron Warrior Shi Guangzhu stood up with a sway, holding a submachine gun, braving the machine gun "boom la" machine gun bullets, wounded and led the soldiers to use a piece of rock cover to attack forward, and quickly wiped out the defending enemy. During the battle, Li Jinping, deputy company commander, stepped on a landmine and broke his left leg. Acting platoon commander Shi Guangzhu's left eyeball was also knocked out, and his right eye was also hit by shrapnel, and he was instantly blinded.

According to the tragic battle situation, the 118th Regiment quickly adjusted its deployment, accelerated the speed of the attack, and surrounded and annihilated the enemy on the main peak of Laoshan.

At 10:10, the artillery group of our division carried out a five-minute artillery fire attack on the No. 50 heights. The 8th Company followed behind the artillery landing point and quickly captured Heights 54, while the 7th Company joined the battle from the southeastern side of the Heights. The 5th Company, the 4th Company, the 7th Company, the 6th Company, and the 9th Company simultaneously launched a centripetal attack on the main peak of Laoshan Mountain, and fought until 11:50, all of which surrounded and annihilated the enemy on the main peak of Laoshan and the No. 50 Heights, and then transferred to the clearing.

So far, after seven hours of fierce attack and operation, the 2nd and 3rd Battalions have successively captured the 21st, 52nd, 45th, 46th, 50th, 56th, 54th, 57th, and 59th heights at the cost of 205 wounded and 71 sacrificed, and completely annihilated the Annan army guarding the main peak of the old mountain, killing more than 320 Annan troops and capturing 15 people.

The 1st Battalion was tasked with interspersing and attacking the 1072nd Heights, but due to command errors, the troops suffered heavy casualties, and the 1st Battalion failed to capture the 1072 Heights on the day when the main force conquered the main peak of the Old Mountain. On April 29, the 118th Regiment ordered the 4th Company of the 120th Regiment to cooperate with the attack, and the battle lasted until 13:50 and occupied the 1072nd Heights.

After the war, the heroic 2nd Battalion was awarded the collective first-class merit and was awarded the title of "Laoshan Hero Battalion" by the Central Military Commission.
