Chapter 31: The Greek Civil War (Part II)

On Stalin's instructions, the PKK leadership tried to avoid a stalemate with Papandreou's government. Although the leaders of the Greek Communist Party, Andreas Zimas and Ares Veluchiotis, did not trust the British, most of the PLA soldiers regarded the British as liberators who drove out the Germans, and warmly welcomed Wang Shi ashore. The leader, Tsimas, opposed the PLA's cooperation with the British, and he himself preferred to keep in touch with the Yugoslav leader, Joseph Bruz Tito.

The demand for the disarmament of the resistance groups is the cause of friction between the Papandreou Government and its FNL members. At the suggestion of the British ambassador, Reginald Lipper, Papandreou's government demanded that all armed factions lay down their arms and form a unified national militia under government command.

In fact, there is nothing wrong with what the Papanrio government has done, but how can people who pick up the barrel of a gun and taste the sweetness easily put aside their own interests? If it were that simple, the history of the reunification of all countries in the world would not be bloody, and only the leaders could guarantee with an iron fist that a country would not fall back into disintegration in the early days of reunification.

What, the parties are democratic-republican? Jokes, Iraq is an example, Libya is an example, a group of guys with evil intentions sit together and form a government that has no eggs at all, that's not called a republic, it's a brain in water.

The National Liberation Front, under the pretext of putting down an amendment that would make it impossible for the PLA to resist the offensive of the right-wing militias, submitted an amendment to Papandreou, which was rejected by the government. FNL had no choice but to compromise with the government, and on 1 December, Skovi ordered the disbandment of the Liberation Army. And the fool also knew that the PLA was the bargaining capital of the Greek Communist Party with the government, so the leader of the Greek Communist Party, Sian Tos, decided to refuse to carry out the order demanding the dissolution of the PLA.

Greece was not a sure thing from the start, and Papanrio could have sowed discord and broken it, but the Greek government missed the opportunity.

Tito's influence played an extraordinary role in the PLA's refusal to disarm. Tito was outwardly loyal to Stalin, but behind the scenes he was building up his strength with his own armament, and he believed the Greeks would do the same. However, this influence of his could not prevent the FNL leadership from agreeing to Skovi's command of the Liberation Army two months ago.

On 3 December, the National Liberation Front held a demonstration in Syntagma Square in central Athens. During the demonstration, the police opened fire on the crowd of marchers. With this as the fuse, the all-out battle with the People's Liberation Army on one side, the Greek government army and the British army on the other side officially began, artillery and fighter planes appeared on the battlefield, of course, artillery and aircraft were the equipment of the British army.

On December 4, Papandreou was ready to resign, however, the British ambassador forced him to stay. By December 12, the "Liberation Army" had taken control of most of Athens and all of Piraeus. Officers and men of the 4th British Division stationed in Italy came to reinforce them. In the past, those groups that had collaborated with the Nazis sided with the government and the British, and the soldiers of the Reconciliation-Liberation Army engaged in large-scale killings.

Over time, the British army, which was superior in armament, gradually gained the upper hand. The PLA in other parts of Greece did not attack government forces or British forces. This clearly shows that the PLA had no intention of provoking a civil war, and that the reason for the outbreak of fighting was largely due to the righteous indignation of the fighters.

When the conflict broke out between the British and the Liberation Army, the war was not over. This brought a serious political crisis to Churchill's coalition government, and was also protested by the British public, American public opinion, and the House of Commons of the British Parliament. In order to show his sincerity in maintaining peace, Churchill personally arrived in Athens on December 24 to convene both sides of the conflict to negotiate a ceasefire. Representatives of the Soviet Union were also invited to attend the meeting. But the British side thought that the demands of the National Liberation Front were too much, so Churchill's efforts failed.

On January 5, 1945, the Liberation Army was forced to withdraw from Athens due to its lack of strength. As a result of Churchill's interference, Papandreou resigned and was replaced by General Nicolaus Plastilas, a staunch anti-communist, who would dismiss, liberate, and dismiss. On 15 January 1945, Scovey agreed to a ceasefire, but the British offered the withdrawal of the PLA from Patras and Thessaloniki and its dissolution in the Peloponnese.

Although the Liberation Army was defeated in the war, it refused to disband, and the Greek Communist Party was given the opportunity to reconsider its strategy.

The defeat of the Greek Communist Party in 1945 was mainly political, and the terrorist acts of both sides of the conflict made a political solution more difficult. The expansion of the Greek Communist Party's pursuit of so-called "traitors" has affected innocent people, and there is a smell of red-color-high-cotton. During the Greek Communist Party's control of Athens, the Communists were as notorious as the fascist parties because they executed a total of 8,000 people for various political reasons, started a pattern of mass ridicule and succeeded in rallying hatred.

And when they evacuated, they took another 20,000 hostages, most of them children, in order to raise communists-proletarian-righteous fighters. After the Battle of Athens, the Greek Communist Party's support plummeted, all of which led to the departure of some prominent non-communist-proletarian figures of the FNL. On the other hand, far-right groups are no better, and their terrorist activities are no less impunity. After four years of brutal war, the Greek people now want peace and reconstruction, not civil war.

Dog-eat-dog hairy, Greek Communist Party, right-wing, nothing more than a brutal civil war under the banner of liberating Greece.

In February 1945, with the unanimous support of the Allies, the Greek parties signed the Varzisa Agreement. The agreement stipulates that the PLA and all other paramilitaries must be disbanded, all former political prisoners must be pardoned, a referendum on whether to retain the monarchy must be held, and general elections must begin immediately. The Greek Communist Party (PKR) remains legitimate. Its leader, Nicholas Zahiariadis, returned to Greece from Germany in April 1945. He said the current goal of the PKR is to achieve "people's democracy" through peaceful means.

It has to be said that the Greek Communist Party was a political and military defeat, and after the liberation-liberation army ceased to exist, the government army and the far-right elements were able to continue their war against the former members of the National Liberation Front with impunity. The amnesty was unjust, as many acts of resistance during the German occupation were considered war crimes and were not pardoned. Because of this, many of the old partisans hid their weapons in the mountains, and about 5,000 people withdrew to Yugoslavia to wait and see.

With the deterioration of relations between the Soviet Union and the Western allies, the beginning of the Cold War and the active armed forces of the world, the Greek Communist Party soon changed its political position. Although Stalin still did not regain support for the armed struggle in Greece, the leadership of the Greek Communist Party, after a thorough analysis of the domestic, Balkan and international situation, decided in February 1946 to "launch a new round of armed struggle against the dictatorship of the monarchy and fascist regime."

And as PLA guerrillas gradually infiltrate Greece from the border mountains of Yugoslavia and Albania, the war will resume in March 1946, the following month.

This is also the reason why Albert worked overtime to produce a batch of Uzi submachine guns, through some special means of the Belgian military department, he contacted General Nicolaus Plastilas, saying that FN company is willing to provide 1,000 AKM rifles and 200,000 rounds of ammunition at a relatively low price, because the Belgian government army was constantly expanding its troops, and the temporary shortage of firearms gave them a headache. Anyway, the money he spent was also provided by the state, so he didn't feel distressed, so General Nikolaus was happy to accept this batch of rifles.

On the part of the Greek Communist Party, Albert contacted the leader of the guerrillas, Vafiadis, and sold the mini-Uzi and miniature Uzi to the National Liberation Front at a half-sell-half-free price, because only 200 Uzi submachine guns and 5,000 rounds of ammunition were rushed to work, and the Greek Communist Party distributed the arms to the guerrillas lurking in the city.

At the same time, Albert also approached the prime minister of the right-wing government, Chadarisli, and told him that the Belgian Strategic Resources Company was willing to secretly send mercenaries to the war and infiltrate the areas controlled by Greece to assassinate high-value targets.

Selling AKM rifles to the national army, selling Uzi submachine guns to the rebels, and secretly signing an agreement with the government to send paramilitary operatives into Greece, Albert's approach can be said to be shameless to the extreme, but both are ready to fight anyway, and Albert can be regarded as allowing them to afford a decent war as much as possible.

After all, the Uzi submachine gun and the Dragonov sniper rifle designed by himself still rely on this war to become famous!
