Chapter 28: Helicopters (3)
We basically didn't stop to rest that night, and we didn't ambush the helicopter again...... This is partly because the Soviets will not be fooled again, and partly because we know that helicopter gunships are not an easy thing to deal with, let alone ...... If we had been ambushed along the road, the Soviets would not have been fools, and they would soon have deduced from our path the direction in which we were moving.
For these reasons...... We did only two things on the way to retreat, one was to march and the other was to camouflage the helicopters when they approached.
For this set, Hassan and his party can be said to be very good at ...... They even had a way of hiding the mules in time and quieting them down.
As a result, as time went on, Soviet helicopters appeared less and less often...... In fact, it cannot be said that the frequency of helicopter sorties is less, but it should be said that because we have fled far, the range of their search needs to be larger and larger.
I think these helicopter pilots hated us to the core...... They had been out on a mission the day before because they had participated in the sweep, and when they were about to rest in the evening, they had to move again because of the annihilation we had fought...... Not only that, but they also had two helicopters, one destroyed and one damaged.
This loss was no small matter for the Soviet army...... It's just a gunship, but it costs a whopping $5.5 million per unit...... I feel a little sorry to think that we have stolen just over a million dollars from pirates and have been treated as a mountain of gold, and that we have just blown up a helicopter worth $5.5 million into scrap metal......
Then we finally stopped when it was getting dark...... Although we are now some distance from Kabul, we still dare not march in the daylight...... The USSR had spy satellites. There are reconnaissance planes, helicopters...... Fight for death on the march during the day!
Hassan laughed as soon as he hid in his hideout.
"Battalion Commander Yang! Fight hard! Hassan said: "Now I finally believe that Allah has brought you to our country to save us!" The Soviet troops we annihilated that night...... I'm afraid that there are more Soviets annihilated by the national partisans! And also wrecked a helicopter...... You know? This was the first Soviet helicopter we destroyed. It was also the first helicopter destroyed since the Soviet army entered Afghanistan! ”
"Huh?" I was a little surprised by this sentence: "You mean...... None of these helicopter gunships have ever been destroyed before? ”
"Of course not!" Hassan shook his head: "Not only is it not...... The guerrillas also suffered numerous casualties under such helicopters. That's why they call this helicopter 'Cobra'! ”
It's a fitting nickname...... The wings of the gunship for carrying weapons resemble the broad neck of a cobra when it is about to attack.
Then I frowned again...... This illustrates the fact that neither we nor the Afghan guerrillas have the weapons to deal with this helicopter gunship, in other words, it will put us in a very passive position on the battlefield, and it can almost be said that as long as the Soviets can find the target, they can basically destroy the target...... Of course, this must be done in the daytime with a good line of sight.
So, we should rejoice that the Soviet army did not have many helicopters in Afghanistan...... However, this does not seem to be due to luck, but rather to the poor logistical supply capacity of the Soviet Union due to the terrain of Afghanistan.
"Enemy Spotting!" Just then, a sentry reported to me via walkie-talkie. I quickly passed on the command to "watch out for concealment".
Then a Mi-24 appeared in the sky...... Because it was daytime, the Soviets began to boldly begin to fly alone again!
In fact, this is not just because of the daytime, but because the Mi-24 pilots have not rested for a day and night, so in order to be able to keep tracking, they have to reduce the number of flights and let the pilots rest in batches.
The Mi-24 flew in the sky for a while, then came to a halt in an open area a few miles away, and then seven or eight Soviet and government troops emerged from the helicopter...... Because our habitat is on high ground, we can easily tell from their uniforms.
It's obvious...... The Soviets were on the ground searching for our tracks, and they brought government troops...... Don't think about it, it's just an Afghan who is familiar with the terrain in this area or a master tracker.
I'm not worried about that, because we're not a rabble...... As a member of the synthesis camp, we have long learned to stalk, and of course we know how to counter-stalk. What's more, the air currents set off by the helicopter before landing have already blown away the clues on the ground.
On the other hand...... This part of Afghanistan is windy and sandy, and it doesn't take half an hour for a deep footprint to go down and you can't see it. So I'm sure that those Soviet troops won't have anything to gain.
What surprised me was...... This helicopter gunship is not only well-equipped and well-protected...... Now let me know again that it can carry infantry!
I found out later...... The full name of the Mi-24 is the Armed Transport Helicopter, which means that it can not only fight, but also carry 8 heavily armed infantry to quickly deliver it to the battlefield...... Of course, the number of infantry carried on this board is a little smaller, and this amount of troops is difficult to play a role in an ordinary battlefield, but if it is a special operation...... This guy is an artifact!
This thought gave me the urge to rush down and snatch the helicopter down...... But that's just thinking about it, because I know it's not going to be possible...... The first is that the helicopter is always in a state of readiness, and as soon as we appear it will take off, and secondly, none of us will fly a helicopter...... Even if we rob it, it will be in vain, and the most important thing is that it is still daytime, and the result of doing so will only expose us and leave us unspared.
So I could only watch as the Soviets returned to the cabin, and then flew back into the air with the sound of "whirring" propellers.
One thing I have to admit is...... Although we all fought from the battlefield, we did not have any experience in dealing with the enemy's air liliang...... This was, of course, due to the fact that no warplanes were used on the battlefield in Vietnam...... Whether it is the devil or us, we are not using the air liliang, so we are almost blank when dealing with the Soviet Air Force.
If anything, it was last night's battle.
This made me determined that when I returned to the base, I must find a set of effective methods against the Soviet Air Force. (To be continued......)
