Chapter 55 - Talking about the Concept of Righteousness and Benefit

It turns out that this "white origami" is not simple at all.

Zhang Suihan said to Hongyi that since the Qing Dynasty entered the customs, the world has become more and more peaceful, and national political affairs have become more and more complicated. At the time of Gai Chengping, the princes of the court had nothing to do, but when they read the major officials in other provinces, they found fault with the broken characters in the pieces and those who did not match the various styles, thinking that they were dedicated to state affairs. Dafan ministers submit folded pieces, the word to work in Hongwu Zhengyun, especially remember the temple of the emperors of this dynasty, and the emperor of the sky, back to the will, the landing ministers, all kinds of taboos. The slightest negligence, that is, the minister pointed out that the punishment was light, and the demotion was serious, which was taken as a warning by the feudal officials. Therefore, for the selection of folds, those who must be pure and flawless are the top quality.

Zhang Suihan knew that the future of the officials was very large, and he was very careful about this matter, and each white fold must be selected by the hands of more than a dozen people, and the slightest fine ink blot was inserted into the memory of the remnants, so although its price was more than half as expensive as that of other auxiliaries, it gradually won the trust of the surrounding Han courtiers. Because of the white origami sold by his "South Paper Mill", there is no fault with it, and it can be assured that the Lord will buy it. As time went by, even the provincial officials around the capital would appoint their subordinates to buy in batches in Beijing, and the business was booming day by day.

"It seems that Master Zhang has a way to make money!" After listening to this, Hongyi felt that this Zhang Sui Han was indeed good at business, and his analytical and judgment skills were good, and he knew what special needs officials like himself had in this fold, and he could seize business opportunities! Simply doing a pen post style seems a bit condescending.

"Your Excellency! Although his subordinates are in business, even so, they dare not forget the ancient precept of Confucius Sage that 'a gentleman is a righteous man, and a villain is a man of profit'. In official business, subordinates must do their best to live up to their mission! Zhang Suihan, who didn't think that the government and businessmen would eat everything, seemed to be poked at the point, and he actually justified his words. It seems that he took Hongyi's praise as a mockery.

"Haha, who said that Confucius didn't seek profit?" Hongyi suddenly became interested. Coincidentally, as a college student who graduated from the School of International Political and Economic Relations in later generations, he can have a superficial study of the Confucian idea of righteousness and benefit.

"A gentleman is only righteous, why bother with profit?" Zhang Suihan quoted a classic quote from Kong Lao Er and stopped talking. Do you dare to deny the words of the Holy Prophet? It's really a descendant of the Tartars, although it is rumored to be a "holy child", it's just that.

Hongyi saw the disdain of "Store Manager Zhang", and he was not in a hurry, and said slowly: "Regarding righteousness and benefit, in fact, the Confucian classics have discussions, and you must not generalize. ”

"Confucianism is a university that has entered the WTO, and it has many concerns, and righteousness and benefit are one of the major theories. What is righteousness? What is profit? The righteous are related to specific ethics and morality, and are the supreme morality in the hearts of Confucianists. The beneficiary, "the use of people is called profit", mostly refers to the things that ordinary people need. How do you think about righteousness and benefit? The stakes are high!

First, Confucianism does not ignore profit, but believes that the existence of profit must be reasonable, which is revealed in the treatises of Confucian sages. Confucius believed that the pursuit of wealth and nobility is the nature of human beings, 'rich and noble, people do what they want', and believed that the monarch should put the livelihood of the people in the first place when presiding over the state affairs. When Zigong asked about the government, he replied: "Sufficient food, foot soldiers, and the trust of the people", it can be seen that Confucius valued the livelihood of the people, but he had the idea of "life and death, wealth and wealth in the sky", and paid more attention to righteousness, so he 'rarely said profit' and had a cautious and conservative attitude towards profit. Mencius, who advocated that 'the people are precious', also emphasized the livelihood interests of the people, and pointed out that the monarch should give priority to the interests of the people when he ruled the people, so that he would be able to serve his parents and save his wife, and he would be full for life, and he would be free from death in the fierce years', pointing out that the monarch should give priority to the interests of the people in governing the country. Xunzi also affirmed the objective existence of profit, pointing out that "the righteous and the profitable, the place of the human being." Although Yao Shun cannot go to the interests of the people, although he cannot go to the good righteousness of the people'. Dong Zhongshu also affirmed the interdependent relationship between righteousness and profit: 'Heaven gives birth to man, so that life is righteous and profitable. Profit to nourish their body, righteousness also to nourish their heart. The heart cannot be happy without righteousness, and the body cannot be at peace without profit.'" It can be seen that in the Confucian concept of righteousness and benefit, whether to emphasize profit or not is not the most important issue, but the relationship between righteousness and benefit, that is, which is more important than the two, is the core of the concept of righteousness and benefit.

The relationship between righteousness and benefit contains two connotations. First of all, between the monarch and the minister, the father and the son, and the upper and lower respects, Confucianism emphasizes the three outlines, the righteousness of the family and the country is supreme, and selfish desires should be restricted. Secondly, we must be benevolent and righteous, and when seeking profit, we must not betray righteousness, but be constrained by righteousness, which is exactly what Mencius said, "The rich and the rich cannot be lewd, the mighty cannot be bent, and the poor and the lowly cannot be moved".

Confucianism has always emphasized righteousness over profit. Confucius praised Yan and replied, "Virtuous, return!" A spoonful of food, a scoop of drink, in the alleys, people are unbearable and do not change their pleasures." Peng even asked Confucius: "There are dozens of cars behind and hundreds of servants, so as to pass food to the princes, not Taihu?" Mencius replied, "If it is not his way, then a spoonful of food cannot be taken by others; If it is the way, then Shun will be the world of Yao". It can be seen that Mencius does not care about the big and small benefits, the key is whether there is righteousness or not, no matter how big the benefits are, no matter how small the benefits are, they cannot be accepted. When Zhu Xi arrived, he pointed out that "profit is born from that righteousness, and everything is handled appropriately, and profit will follow, so the sum of righteousness of the beneficiary" covers both righteousness and benefit", which shows that Confucianism advocates seeing the righteousness of the righteousness and guiding the benefit with righteousness, emphasizing that people's "profit-seeking" should be consistent with "the Tao". Confucius said: "Rich and noble, people can do whatever they want, and they will not get it by their way, and they will not be able to do it anywhere." Poverty and cheapness, what people are evil, it is not easy to get rid of it, and it is not easy to go to it." Seeking the rich and the poor should take righteousness as the criterion, guide profit with righteousness, and eliminate evil with righteousness, otherwise it will be counterproductive. Righteousness and benefit, this is the ideal of Confucianism!

When this ideal realm cannot be obtained, that is, righteousness and profit cannot be both, Confucianism made the choice of first righteousness and then profit, sacrificing profit for righteousness, and even sacrificing life for righteousness. "I want the fish, and I want the bear's paw; You can't have both, and you can't have both, and you can give up the fish and take the bear's paw. I give birth to what I want, righteousness also I want, you can't have both, and those who sacrifice their lives to take righteousness are also. Life is also what I want, and what I want is more than the living, so I don't want to get it; Death is also evil to me, and evil is worse than the dead, so I will not give up." Here, Mencius greatly emphasized the importance of righteousness, for the sake of which life can be sacrificed, let alone selfish interests. Dong Zhongshu proposed that "righteousness does not seek its own benefits, and it is clear that its way does not count its merits", requiring people to go beyond utilitarianism and maintain moral and personal perfection. Zhu Xi vigorously advocated the idea of "not seeking profit, not counting merit", and emphasized that "benevolence and righteousness must come first, not utilitarianism as urgency", and profit is always after righteousness, choose righteousness, dilute the pursuit of material desires, and achieve moral satisfaction.

It can be seen that the Confucian concept of righteousness and benefit is not to seek profit, but only profit is subordinate to righteousness, righteousness occupies a position of weight, and the pursuit and acquisition of profit must not only be restricted by righteousness, but when necessary, abandon profit because of righteousness, which is the essence of Confucianism's emphasis on righteousness and light on profit-seeking profit with righteousness. At the same time of seeking profit, take righteousness as the criterion, do not harm others and the foundation of the family and country, a gentleman loves money, takes it in the right way, why not seek profit for the righteousness of China?

What is righteousness and what is profit? In my opinion, being loyal to the monarch and patriotism, leading the world in the avenue is the great righteousness, enriching the country and benefiting the people, and supporting the strong army and the world is the great benefit! If Mr. Zhang can make this small paper shop bigger and stronger, lead the fashion of the world's merchants, and become a giant businessman in China and a rich man in the world, then the tax of the imperial court will definitely be considerable. If, in all walks of life, there are loyal and patriotic, Chinese giant businessmen, who travel to and from the sea and do business in the world, then the income of our royal court will inevitably be considerable, our Chinese national strength will inevitably stand alone in the world, my subjects of the Qing Dynasty will be rich and fulfilling, and our agriculture, industry and commerce will be healthy and harmonious. The long-cherished wish of the Holy Prophet can be fulfilled!

However, to achieve this great righteousness and heavy profit, it is necessary to start with the micro sense and light profit, what is the micro meaning? The personality of the person is then known, the knowledge is sincere and then the intention is sincere, the heart is positive and then the body is cultivated, and the body is cultivated and then the family is Qi, which is the micro meaning; The merchant is not deceitful, fair and virtuous, and it is also a micro-sense. What is light profit? Start small, save money, accumulate a lot, and operate in good faith, which is light profit. If everyone gets the micro-righteousness, it will converge into the great righteousness, and the family will inevitably be united and then the country will be governed, and the country will be governed and then the world will be peaceful. If you take it lightly, it will gradually become a big profit, and it will inevitably enrich the country and benefit the people, and all the people in the world will have no worries about food and clothing.

Lord Zhang, if you are willing to be the first Confucian businessman in the world, I am willing to help you! ”

With the memory of his college days, Hongyi said a long paragraph in one breath, quoting scriptures and classics, every word, Zhang Suihan who listened to it, and that Ji Kaisheng, was simply stunned and unable to refute. Hongyi took a sip of water, didn't speak, and sat there quietly waiting.

"Xiaguan Ji Kaisheng, when I heard Lord Belle's words, I realized that there are mountains outside the mountains and there are heavens outside the sky!" Ji Kaisheng bowed deeply and said sincerely. Benefiting from the hard work of compiling and editing the book "Chinese Studies and Western Studies" day and night in recent days, he was able to get in touch with the advanced ideas of later generations relatively early, so he accepted it much faster than Zhang Suihan.

"Lord Ji is polite, what I said just now, if it can be used, adults can choose their essence and compile it into the book "Chinese Studies and Western Studies". Hongyi demanded.

"Xia Guan understands!" Ji Kaisheng was full of promises.

"How can his subordinates be able to do it, today I have to be mentioned by Lord Baylor, it is really a blessing for three lives! Please also ask Lord Belle to teach me! Zhang Suihan, who is more business-minded, after understanding, patiently waited for Ji Kaisheng's statement to end, and hurriedly followed Hongyi's sentence "If you are willing to be the first Confucian businessman in the world, I will help you" to seek golden ideas!
