Chapter Seventy-Seven: The Fifth Pass
PS: It's still the third watch today, just because there is a little personal matter during the day, and the third watch will be after twelve o'clock.
After a night of civil strife...... Four battalions of Afghan government forces can be described as falling apart.
The collapse here does not mean that all of the more than 3,000 Afghan government troops are dead...... In fact, the death toll was only six or seven hundred...... Most of the government troops have already scattered and fled, but of course, whether they can escape or not is another matter, because there are a large number of guerrillas lurking in the mountains, waiting for them to fall into the net.
Some of these government troops who fled actually went to the guerrillas, and the rest...... Then he became a prisoner of the Soviet army.
I don't know what the Soviets will do with these prisoners, but I do know that these Afghan government forces that are cannon fodder for the Soviets will definitely not have much combat effectiveness, and the Soviets will not dare to transfer new Afghan government troops to "help in the war" for the time being...... Just kidding, last night's infighting had already cost the Soviets a lot of money...... The losses here were not only the casualties of the Soviet soldiers, but also the depletion of morale and supplies, which were incalculable for the entire campaign.
So, even if the Soviet army has this heart...... I'm afraid I don't have the courage to transfer the Afghan government army again, what if I do it again? This offensive against the Shigio Valley could be declared a complete failure.
In fact...... If the Soviet commander is sensible, he should choose to withdraw at this time...... Civil strife before the battle is not a trivial matter, at least they should also withdraw from this valley and rest outside for a few days to investigate.
But the Soviets did not do this...... Perhaps they think that this civil strife is just the chaos of the Afghan government forces, and they just need to get rid of the restless parts. Or maybe they are not willing to admit defeat like this...... You know, before last night, they were still confident of victory, and they thought that they only needed to play another day or two to take down the Higio Valley. But today he admitted defeat and withdrew with his tail between his legs...... Unless the Soviet commander is prepared to accept a series of penalties that come with doing so. Otherwise, I wouldn't have done that.
Thereupon...... The main Soviet forces stationed outside the valley were soon injected into the valley due to the lack of troops in the valley...... Only two companies of infantry were left outside the valley, plus a few tanks and armor-piercing vehicles. Their task was to hold the high ground on both sides of the valley, including the No. 1 pass, so as to ensure that the Soviets had a way to retreat. The rest were thrown into the valley and stormed Pass No. 4......
The idea of the Soviets was perhaps simple...... They have a lot of modern equipment, as well as helicopter cover, and if not, there is a Mi-8 helicopter airdrop...... Not only can airdrop airborne troops but also all kinds of military materials, plus the valley is indeed suitable for armored troops to fight...... The average width of the Shigio Valley is two kilometers, and other places other than the mountain pass are suitable for the deployment of Soviet tanks, armored vehicles, infantry fighting vehicles and other equipment, and the guerrillas can be said to be looking for death when they attack them, not to mention that the strength of the Soviet army is more than twice that of the guerrillas, and the suzhì and equipment are not of the same grade.
So...... They firmly believe in one thing. As long as the valley is opened and the mountain pass is held, then they will not be in danger.
But here's the problem...... They can't hold the pass, they just don't know it yet.
"Let go of the fourth pass!" I gave this order more than half an hour after the Soviet army launched an attack on the No. 4 pass.
As a result, Pass No. 4 was soon occupied by the Soviets, who cheered, and hundreds of tanks and armored vehicles slowly drove into Valley No. 04 under the cover of helicopters and infantry......
For the Soviet troops, the more passes and valleys they occupied, the more they represented victory...... But for us, the more valleys they occupy, the more scattered their forces are, and the deeper the trap they fall in!
"Hold on to the No. 5 Pass!" Here's my next command.
The only thing that makes me feel a little bit of a pity is...... The strength of the guerrillas was so small that there were only about 4,000 in total...... Moreover, the characteristics of the Afghan guerrillas also determine that their combat effectiveness is not strong, and at the same time, they cannot be too dispersed. So I can only focus on these Soviet troops in the north. For those Soviet troops to the south...... Just teach them a lesson, we can't eat a big fat man in one bite!
"Yes!" Zhao Jingping responded. The order was quickly delivered.
In fact, if we really had to hold on to a mountain pass, the Soviet army would not have been able to capture it so easily...... The reason for this is twofold, on the one hand, because of the well-fortified high ground on both sides of the pass, which is the masterpiece of our arrival in the valley of Chigio...... This is thanks to our combat experience in the Vietnam battlefield, and even we have combined some of the things we learned from the Vietnamese devils...... The things on the battlefield, if only because we hate the enemy's things not to use, it seems too stupid, even the ancients knew the truth of "master Yi long skills to control the enemy", but there are modern people will blindly abandon the enemy's things because of personal emotional reasons.
It's like I once looked at a TV series in modern times...... When the protagonist in it handed him a 38 cover by his comrades-in-arms, he replied indignantly: "I don't use Japanese things!" ”…… Seeing this, I couldn't help but scold: "This is fucking brain water, how many combat heroes in history have captured Japanese weapons to fight Japanese people...... With this nonsense of yours, you have negated the hero and put yourself on the altar! ”
Because of this level of understanding, I did not hesitate or have any obstacles to quote a lot of tactics learned from the Yue Devils, just like last night's suspicious tactics...... But then again, these tactics are actually not the original of the Vietnamese devils, they also learned from us, you must know that during the Vietnam War of Resistance against France and the War of Resistance against the United States, the main division of the Vietnamese army was equipped and trained on the Sino-Vietnamese border, and then entered Vietnam to fight with the French and Americans...... It's just that we have forgotten about these excellent tactics because we have had a gray period.
In this way, each pass has been developed into trenches on the ground, forts on the ridges, scattered cat's ear holes, and fortifications combined with underground tunnels...... This kind of fortification seems to be scattered, but in fact, they are all interconnected and mutually supportive, forming a complete defense system.
Just like what we're seeing now...... A large number of Soviet soldiers rushed to the No. 5 Pass under the cover of tanks, armored vehicles and helicopters...... On the surface, they seemed to have completely suppressed the fire of our troops, but from the side and behind them, out of nowhere, several partisans with machine guns fired at them......
This is the "side-firing firepower" and "back-hitting firepower" commonly used by the Yue devils on the battlefield...... It is characterized by attacking the enemy's weak points by surprise and does not require much force...... Only five fighters or even less are needed in one direction...... Two fighters armed with machine guns, and the other three fighters armed with assault rifles for cover, slammed into the enemy and ran away with the bullets.
The Vietnamese army ran into the jungle, while the Afghan guerrillas ran into the stone forest...... The mountains of Afghanistan are full of stones several meters or even more than ten meters high, so it is not difficult to hide at all, which is one of the reasons why the mountains of Afghanistan are suitable for guerrilla warfare.
The Soviet charge was fought bitterly under this tactic of our army...... Their fire is fierce, but they always can't hit the right place, it's a bit like hitting mosquitoes with their fists...... The strength is great, but it just can't hit mosquitoes!
For the guerrillas who are constantly harassing "from the side" and "from the back...... They don't chase it, not only do they have to tremble along the way to feel that there are enemies in all directions, but once they are successfully attacked by the guerrillas, they will also suffer quite heavy casualties...... These were "side-fired fire" and "back-fired fire", and the Soviets were either side-fired or back-to-back machine guns...... There was a burst of "whoosh" sweeping, not to mention, and more than a dozen people fell in pools of blood...... The Soviets also launched a charge on a high ground with only one company...... How can it withstand such a few strafing shots!
But if this is chasing...... Not to mention the dispersion of their own forces, this is the territory of the guerrillas...... Those who chased the guerrillas left and right in the stone forest got lost within two clicks...... I'm afraid that I won't even know how to die.
It was then that the Soviet troops remembered the benefits of the Afghan government army...... If they were, they could at least make up for some of their own shortcomings. But now I regret it, I'm afraid it's too late!
On the other hand...... The defense of each pass was also combined with mortar positions.
The mountain passes are located in a special location, and most of them are located in the middle of the valley...... As mentioned earlier, the average width of the valley is two kilometers...... Then on the middle line, that is, with the mountains on both sides of the Great Sigh is only one kilometer.
So mortars are useful...... The firing range of 60 guns and 82 guns is about 3 km, and the range of 100 mortars is 5 km...... Let's draw several circles with the mountain pass as the center of the circle and the range of the mortars as the radius, and build light mortar positions scattered within this small circle, and heavy mortar positions within the large circle......
Among them, it is worth mentioning heavy mortars...... Because of its long range, the range that can be built increases in progression...... The area of the outer circle of the large circle will be much larger than that of the small circle. So the distribution of heavy mortar positions can be wide.
But this is only one aspect, and what is more important is the large circle drawn with the two mountain passes as the center and the intersecting area...... To put it simply, a heavy mortar position can provide fire cover for two mountain passes at once...... These areas are our top priority, not only for the large amount of ammunition for these mortar positions, but also for the other fighters who have arranged our mortar batteries.
THAT'S WHY I WOULD ASK MAJOR LANA FOR A 100MM MORTAR BEFORE THE WAR. (To be continued......)
