Chapter 305: Stay in China
Sukhoi couldn't speak clearly, and Hu Weidong was a layman, so it was difficult to explain clearly for a while, but Hu Weidong, out of trust in the master's ability, still agreed to make major changes to the original design of the J-1, which made Sukhoi very moved. Come on,.! His rare excited expression made Hu Weidong's heart suddenly move, he remembered that the Sukhoi designed Sukhoi attack aircraft in history was not selected by the Soviet military for reasons other than Jishu, but the Il-2 bomber with inferior comprehensive performance to it shined in the Soviet-German war, and was known as the most Haode attack aircraft during World War II, and similar examples were far more than this in the first 10 years after the creation of the Sukhoi Design Bureau, and the design bureau was even once shut down. It wasn't until Sukhoi later designed the classic Su-27 series in his twilight years that Shijie was established as the number one in one fell swoop.
Thinking of this, Hu Weidong unconsciously had a thought in his heart, "I can't imagine that this guy is not a late bloomer at all, but he has been suppressed for a long time and can't get ahead."
The more Hu Weidong thought about it, the more he felt that it was possible, because among his counterparts in the Soviet Union, there was precisely one who had a direct competition with Sukhoi, and that guy was not only outstanding, but more importantly, he had an absolutely hard backstage, and this brother was the founder of the Soviet MiG Design Bureau - Artem. Mikoyan
Historically, the Mikoyan Design Bureau and the Sukhoi Design Bureau, which were created almost at the same time, although they were both Shijie's top fighter design bureaus, the development of the Mikoyan Design Bureau in the first two decades was much smoother than that of the Sukhoi Design Bureau, not so much because Mikoyan's talent was stronger than Sukhoi. It's more because he has an older brother who was powerful in the Soviet Union
Anastas. Ivanovich. Mikoyan, in a sense, can be said to be the most successful politician in the history of the Soviet Union (although he did not become the boss, but he has always stood tall when he was alive, and he also left a good reputation after his death, probably only this gentleman, whose status is a bit like our Zhou Gong. From Lenin to Brezhnev, he held various key positions in the highest echelons of Soviet politics for 55 years. With this boss here, even if he didn't say anything to seek care for his younger brother, the leader in charge was in charge of showing favor. He would certainly look the other way, and Mikoyan was a genius designer in his own right, so it was natural for him to stand out. As a direct competitor, Sukhoi naturally has no place to get ahead, perhaps the only thing he is thankful for is that Mikoyan died a few years earlier than him, otherwise he is afraid that his Zuihou work Su-27 may die
Sukhoi himself should have realized this, otherwise he would not have kept his favorite fighter jet until Mikoyan retired, and would have mainly studied bomber/attack aircraft. This time, he came to China, and he may not really follow his teacher. There is an opportunity to preside over the design of fighter jets, maybe that is the real reason", Hu Weidong thought of this, and couldn't help but feel a move in his heart, "Maybe it is possible to keep him in China, and now that the Soviet Union is purging the country, the military and intellectual circles are panicking, this is a once-in-a-lifetime good time!" ”
"Sensitive to words and quick to deeds" refers to people like Sukhoi, with his intelligence and rich experience (Sukhoi was 43 years old at this time. And his previous life was extremely bumpy. How can you not understand your embarrassing situation? Sukhoi doesn't take power or anything seriously, but after his excellent works are buried one after another, he can't help but feel resentful. He was increasingly confused by the intensifying purge in the Soviet Union, and coupled with Hu Weidong's foresight, trust and decentralization, he finally accepted Hu Weidong's invitation and agreed to transfer his organizational ties to China. A year later, he became a Chinese citizen, and his family had already been sent to Luoyang by Hu Weidong. Because Hu Weidong skillfully mixed up the matter in a package of cooperation agreements with the Soviet Union (see this later), and also dug up some other people to hide from the world, the Soviet side did not pay much attention to it. Later, when Sukhoi became recognized as the number one fighter designer, it was too late for the Soviets to regret it
These are all later words, and it is said that the changes made by the two Soviet aircraft design masters to the original models of the J-1 and H-1, among which the improvement of the bomber design was expected by Hu Weidong, after all, the air-cooled engine form is thick and short, while the liquid-cooled engine form is slender, this difference is not ordinarily large, so the engine type is changed, and the shape of the aircraft is bound to be greatly adjusted. In addition, both Tupolev and Sukhoi also had a lot of opinions about the original design of the H-1, and they even barely gave Hu Weidong's hand-drawn design drawings of the initial version barely a passing grade
It is no wonder that although the Mosquito fighter-bomber is a legendary World War II aircraft, it is highly praised mainly because of the special materials used, not necessarily how clever the design is. At the same time, there are more than 40 kinds of "mosquito" modifications in history, Hu Weidong did not see the accurate design drawings back then, but only based on the basic size data in his memory roughly estimated and drawn, he is not a professional aircraft designer, and there will inevitably be many mistakes and flaws in the details, fortunately, Tupolev and Sukhoi, one of the masters and apprentices is good at designing large aircraft, and the other is quite accomplished in the design of small and medium-sized aircraft, and the original rough design of the H-1 was able to be reborn and become a generation of famous aircraft in this time and space.
Leaving aside the details of the improvements, on the whole, the H-1 is the cabin of the aircraft with engines mounted on both ribs and is significantly larger, because the diameter of the air-cooled engine is generally larger than that of the liquid-cooled engine (and Sukhoi also recommends switching to a larger air-cooled engine to increase the power, as detailed below). As a result, flight drag will inevitably increase, but the impact will not be as great as that of a fighter with the engine mounted on the nose. And because the air-cooled engine has an absolute advantage over the liquid-cooled engine, coupled with the help of turbochargers, as well as lighter dead weight and a more beautiful streamlined shape, the speed of the H-1 is not slower than the "Mosquito" fighter-bomber, which is known as the "wooden miracle" in history
Secondly, also because of the modification of the air-cooled engine, the length of the H-1 is not less than one meter shorter than that of the "Mosquito" fighter-bomber. However, because the fuselage material is much lighter than that of the already light "Mosquito" fighter-bomber (Note 1), the requirements for lift are relatively reduced, so the wingspan of the H-1 has also shrunk slightly, so on the whole, the volume of the H-1 is slightly smaller than that of the historical "Mosquito" fighter-bomber
Note 1: The density of the material is slightly larger, but because the strength is much greater than the "balsa wood + glue" used in the prototype, the size of the internal components can be reduced, and the aircraft shell does not need to be so thick, which reduces the self-weight of the fuselage unit volume in disguise.
