Chapter 128: Preparations for the Battle
Now that the battle has been decided, the various preparations before the war have begun to proceed step by step.
In order not to let the Vietnamese army find out what major moves our army has made and make preparations in advance, this kind of transfer and dispatch of troops and generals was carried out in secret.
The troops on the front line practice the principle of not moving if they can...... This was done because the Vietnamese army did not want to find out that our army was mobilizing troops, and second, because the front-line troops had experience in attacking the Banwang area and were familiar with the terrain and topography in the Banwang area. This is the third...... It is precisely because these troops have attacked Banwang and paid a lot of casualties in Banwang that they have a deep hatred for the Vietnamese army...... There is no doubt that this hatred is quite useful once a war is fought.
Therefore, the two regiments that were arranged to be used for feints on the front of Heights 481 and 544 or that would turn from feints to real attacks at any time were the current 505th Regiment and the 493rd Regiment, which had attacked Banwang and retreated to the second line to rest because of too many casualties.
Of course, the 493rd Regiment did not transfer them immediately, but let them continue to rest and recuperate and conduct targeted combat training.
The other infantry regiment is the 471st Regiment in the direction of Aidian. In this place there is a special high mountain at an altitude of 1,300 meters. Locals call it "Gongmu Mountain" and the reason for this name...... In fact, like the Banwang area, this mountain is also relatively gentle in the direction of Vietnam and steep in the direction of China.
But luckily...... Our army has established a firm foothold on this mountain and has taken control of an important commanding height, Qingcaoling, which is located halfway up Gongmu Mountain, that is, the 540 Heights.
From this point of view. Sometimes in military terms, it is not always the higher the more important...... For example, this male and female mountain. The main peak is 1300 meters. However, because it is far away from the exit of the highway and there are dead ends everywhere, the main peak has no military value, but the 540 highland is directly stuck on the highway entrance, which can clearly observe and control the highway, so it has become a battleground for soldiers.
There is no doubt that this Qingcaoling, which is the 540 Heights, is in the hands of our army, which is why I will choose Aidian as a breakthrough.
So three infantry regiments. According to the order of the 481st Heights, the 544th Heights and the Aidian, the 505th Regiment, the 493rd Regiment and the 471st Regiment were responsible respectively, of which the 493rd Regiment was still on the second front to seize time to rest and recuperate, and only on the day of the start of the war would the combat order be issued and enter the war zone that night.
As for the artillery...... What I learned was that the two artillery regiments were arranged on the left and right of the Banwang area.
For this arrangement...... If you have studied artillery tactics, I understand: artillery is also about crossfire. In fact, the principle is very simple, the same two artillery regiments, if these two artillery regiments are all piled up in front of Banwang...... As a result, the vast majority of shells would be blocked by the high ground of Banwang, that is, they could only hit the frontal slopes of Heights 481 and 544...... After that, there will be a large area of dead ends.
Conversely, if the two artillery regiments are separated. One left and one right are deployed in the Banwang area...... Not only can it hit the front of the highlands in the Banwang area, but it can also control the rear of the highlands from the side from the gap between the highlands...... So as to achieve the purpose of reducing the dead angle of artillery fire as much as possible.
In other words. If the former were used, it would have been impossible for these two artillery regiments to hit the 518.6 heights located behind the 481 and 544 heights. On the contrary, if the latter is used to arrange artillery fire, then these two artillery regiments can not only help our army to make a frontal feint, but also provide fire cover for our interspersed troops after our army penetrates to the 518.6 heights.
Similarly, the other two artillery regiments were deployed in the direction of Aidian to provide cover for the troops in the direction of Aidian and create the illusion of attacking Luping.
And that artillery battalion in our synthetic battalion...... Needless to say, this is of course used to accompany us along the way, and to be ready to provide us with artillery assistance at any time.
This can be very busy with Wu Dengxiong and Chuang Wang's artillery team, and it is not easy to know that this is not a simple matter to accompany the advance and provide artillery support at any time...... The reason is that in the process of advancing, there are many places in which our army is in the dead corners of artillery, and these dead ends can only be avoided when the artillery team enters some special areas, in other words...... That is, in the process of our troops moving forward along Highway No. 4, the artillery battalion must constantly change its position if it wants to provide us with artillery assistance at any time. Sometimes moving forward, sometimes going backward......
So the observers of the artillery battalion went around and measured everywhere...... Almost all the mountains near Banwang Zhiaidian have been climbed, and every time they climb a mountain, an artillery observation post must be set up, and then the corresponding contact methods will be established, and then high-powered telescopes and steering wheels and other instruments will be used to observe and map...... After that, the various data are summarized and calculated. zuihou can figure out which section of the road we intersperse into, in which position it would be better for the artillery battalion to provide more haode to provide cover.
There will be some special areas within this...... For example, there are several areas that can be used to control several sections of Highway No. 4 at the same time, and it would be a waste of time to let the artillery battalion go back and forth frequently in these important areas, and it is not necessary to arrange them...... Commander Huang transferred two more artillery battalions to these areas and solved the problem.
So, I was amazed by the amount of artillery used by Zuihou...... Originally, I only asked for three artillery regiments, but I didn't expect that now there are more and more artillery regiments, and there are five artillery regiments!
And all three of these infantry regiments plus five artillery regiments...... The purpose of the operation was only for the smooth penetration of our battalion!
It may seem hard to imagine, but if you think about it deeply, it seems to be very normal.
Blitzkrieg...... In fact, this is how it has to be fought, except that the Germans use bombers, fighters, and reconnaissance planes to provide fire cover for the armored forces...... There is no doubt that it is much more convenient, simpler and more flexible to use aircraft to provide cover, because for aircraft anywhere there will be no dead end, and the speed is still quite fast, and even more powerfully, even if the mechanized troops temporarily change the direction of penetration, there will be no cover...... Just report the position and direction and let the plane fly there!
But with artillery ...... If you want to achieve the effect of full cover, then the procedure is much more complicated. Just like Wu Dengxiong and other artillery observers, they have to collect a large amount of data, and they also have to process and arrange the data...... It is inevitable that there will be mistakes of one kind or another, and some blind spots are still unavoidable...... Although there are not many such dead ends, once there are Vietnamese troops stationed there, artillery can not do anything.
But there's no way around it...... Who made it impossible for us to dispatch the Air Force now? If the Air Force can't use it, then it can only make up with artillery!
Fortunately, the lot we are going to intersperse is right in front of us...... That is, most of Highway 4 is within visual range of the 1300 Heights...... It is said that on the main peak of the 1300 highlands, Lang Son can be observed with a high-powered telescope on a good day, so it is natural to observe the highlands on both sides of Highway 4.
To put it simply, this blitzkrieg, which uses artillery to provide cover, is only feasible within this visual range, if you go deeper into the hinterland...... All right! The artillery is not supported by data, and all of them are not accurate, so they can't provide cover.
So...... It was quite wise for the Germans to choose to use fighter planes to provide reconnaissance and cover for the interspersed troops, but of course this also required close coordination between the air, ground, infantry and other aspects.
What makes people a little helpless is that the German army has been familiar with all this as early as the beginning of World War II, and our army is still fighting on its own until now...... In this respect, it is true that our army is still a long way from other countries.
Of course, none of this is something I need to care about...... Although I have some understanding of artillery tactics, I am still a layman compared to King Chuang and Wu Dengxiong, so I am relieved to leave these things to them...... We just have to report the coordinates and call for artillery fire when the time comes.
All I have to do is to pull other troops to practice and drill again and again in the training base.
First of all, all the mortar companies were replaced with large-caliber heavy mortars, and their training was also transformed into a coordinated infantry and tan attack on the anticline of a high ground, and then a mortar position was built on the anticline as fast as possible to strike at various targets on the two high ground in front......
This is actually to occupy Heights 518.6 and then bomb Heights 481 and 544 ahead...... Of course, the mortar company at this time didn't know this, so Hu Chunming, the commander of the mortar company, couldn't help but be stunned when he got this training jihua: they had never fought such a battle before...... How could this enemy blow himself up in front of him?!!
However, he was puzzled, and the order still had to be carried out, so without hesitation, he immediately rectified it according to the training jihua, and found several similar high ground in the base to start training.
The synergy between the butans is especially important here...... The main reason is that tanks are a sharp weapon for our army to bulldoze Tongmian and quickly occupy the 518.6 heights, which requires us to ensure that a sufficient number of tanks are interspersed with Banwang.
Commander Huang also felt that fifteen tanks might be too little, and asked me if I needed to add a few more...... But I felt that the tanks that were replenished might not be able to coordinate well with our army, and there might be chaos because of these tanks that were replenished, so I thought about it and refused. It was just a request to replace and repair some of the old parts of the tank...... As long as it can be guaranteed that the tank company will not be attrition due to breakdowns on the road. (To be continued......)
