Chapter Ninety-Six: The Battle of Mount Faka
The successful completion of the demining work allowed the fighters of the 2nd Battalion to launch a charge on Mount Fakka at the beginning of the shelling......
Of course, there weren't many men involved in the charge, just a platoon in each direction...... That is, the total number of troops invested on Mount Faka is less than a company.
This was due to the fact that the Vietnamese army's positions No. 4 and No. 5 were not many...... Positions No. 4 and No. 5 are only secondary positions, not to mention that the area is not large, so the troops that the Vietnamese army can deploy in these two positions are only two squads.
On the other hand...... It is because we are a feint, and this is at night, as long as we cover the firepower stronger, it is impossible to distinguish between a little more and less Vietnamese troops in a feint, and a little less is good for our army...... The casualty rate is less!
In fact, what is more important is ...... The two lines of attack we designed were designed to avoid the fire of the Vietnamese army's No. 3 main position...... According to the long-term observation of the second battalion, there were at least two platoons of infantry, and because the No. 3 main position was condescending, the Vietnamese army deployed a large number of light and heavy machine guns and anti-aircraft machine guns here...... If it is targeted by the No. 3 main position, then whether our army is a feint or not, the casualties paid will not be small.
So, just as we have planned, the offensive line of these two platoons of our army is ...... It is to attack in a straight line from positions No. 3 and No. 4 and No. 3 and No. 5...... In this way, when our troops attacked positions 4 and 5, the line of sight and firepower of the Vietnamese troops in position 3 could not play a role because they were blocked by positions 4 and 5.
Of course, there are pros and cons to everything...... Attacking along these two lines means that we have very little range of movement. This means that we can't attack too many people. Otherwise, it's too crowded.
But that's not a problem...... Because our main target is not positions 4 or 5. Rather, it is the main position No. 3 after positions 4 and 5.
I think that the Vietnamese army is afraid that they will not even dream of it...... We're going to use this kind of jumping attack, that is, bypassing positions 4 and 5 and attacking position 3 from the rear!
In about 20 minutes, the two platoons of the 2nd Battalion rushed to the vicinity of the No. 4 and No. 5 positions of the Vietnamese Army...... That's when the results of our three-day training were revealed...... The infantry on the ground immediately provided their positions for the helicopters with tracer bullets and walkie-talkies......
You must know that this is at night, and the battlefield is still full of gunsmoke, and the distance between our army and the Vietnamese army is only more than 100 meters or even dozens of meters...... This distance of about 100 meters seems like a lot in the eyes of the infantry, but in the eyes of our helicopter pilots, especially when the target is still on a high ground with a great inclination...... Pilots often have just a shake in their hands or a shake in a helicopter. The bullet that was originally aimed at the position of the Vietnamese army is very likely to hit the head of his own people!
So at this time, most of our helicopters turned their targets to the head of position No. 3 at a higher level...... One reason for this was the fear of accidental injury, and the other was to suppress the firepower of the Vietnamese troops in Position 3 and block their reinforcements of fire and personnel in Positions 4 and 5.
Of course, not all of these helicopters are steering, and some of them are particularly skilled in operation and have a particularly high level of shooting...... Naturally, it was still to suppress the fire of positions 4 and 5. Our main purpose is to give the Vietnamese army a false impression of storming positions 4 and 5, if there are no helicopters targeting positions 4 and 5...... Then the Vietnamese army will inevitably be suspicious!
There are very few helicopter pilots in this part, after all, we have not been trained for a long time, and the sighting system of the straight five changes also has many shortcomings, and it is indeed not easy to accurately hit the target with these weapons that are not high in accuracy and are also mounted on flying helicopters.
So even among the dozens of pilots in our entire flight, only five such pilots can be found......
One of them, of course, is Zheng Liangqiang...... I have to admit that this guy has a talent for helicopters, and he seems to be familiar with every part of this straight five. When he was sitting in the cockpit and maneuvering the straight five...... We felt like he was one with the helicopter, and the helicopter became a part of his body.
As a result, he was able to fly the helicopter at low altitude over high ground or trees with great precision. Sometimes, they even walked sideways through caves that other pilots thought were impossible......
It is precisely because of his familiarity with helicopters that he can intuitively judge where the equipment is installed after adding weapons, and where it will hit after hitting it...... So he became a veritable helicopter sharpshooter, firing rockets and machine guns that were basically the same.
Ironically...... This guy doesn't know anything about guns......
In order to allow the pilots to be more accurate on the battlefield...... We use it for shooting training when we train pilots. After all, the anti-aircraft machine gun and rocket nest on this helicopter are in their hands, and if they don't even understand the basic shooting principles, it will naturally be difficult to accurately hit the target with the weapons on the helicopter.
So Zheng Liangqiang made a joke...... When I hit the target with 56 and a half, I couldn't make a hole in my target even if I hit a magazine...... On the contrary, there are a few more bullet holes in the target next to it!
At the time, I was a little skeptical that he was aiming at the wrong target...... But when asked about Zheng Liangqiang, he said embarrassedly...... "Actually, it's not wrong." If you really want to aim wrong...... Maybe you'll be able to hit your target! ”
When I heard this, I couldn't help but be speechless for a while...... But he can also be said to be a wonder, although this gun will not shoot...... Hang this gun on a helicopter and you're majestic, as if he were made for helicopters, and helicopters are his transformers!
These pilots who can also fly helicopters can be relatively accurate...... Naturally, they were arranged to suppress the fire of the No. 4 and No. 5 positions of the Vietnamese army.
First of all, the soldiers of the 2nd Battalion fired tracer bullets on the high ground, and these tracer bullets would make bright lines in the night, so the pilots knew it...... The starting point of this tracer bullet is the position of our soldiers, and the end point is the position of the Vietnamese army!
The pilot then makes a quick decision...... Was our troops too close to the Vietnamese positions, and were the pilots sure that they would hit the enemy's positions with rockets at such a short distance without injuring friendly troops...... If this is not possible, the infantry is told to retreat some distance by walkie-talkie.
Otherwise...... It was a volley of rockets or machine guns fired at the positions of the Vietnamese army!
"Battalion commander!" When the second batch of helicopters flew up to replace the first batch of helicopters that had almost run out of ammunition, Zhao Jingping looked at me with an inquiring look: "Is it time to proceed to the next step?" ”
"Hmm!" I nodded, and gave an order to the walkie-talkie: "Attention units...... Enter the second step of the offense, repeat, enter the second step of the offense! ”
The second step of the attack here is, of course, the beginning of the secret rappel towards the back of Mount Faka...... The reason why the order was given as a "second-step offensive" was because of the fear that the Vietnamese army would have radio listening troops in the vicinity...... The Vietnamese army is supported by Soviet devils, so don't think that Vietnam is a poor country and does not have high-tech listening equipment.
Now, however, even if the Vietnamese army has heard the "second step of the offensive", it is ...... I'm afraid they don't understand what it means.
"Yes!" The pilots answered, and soon changed their formation slightly.
Then I saw two helicopters, one left and one right, going around the back of Mount Faka...... Of course, this bypass doesn't start right away...... We have to hide our true combat intentions!
So these two helicopters did nothing to go around...... It's a burst of indiscriminate bombardment at the back of Mount Faka!
Then...... If the Vietnamese army had listened to our radio, I was afraid that it would suddenly dawn on us: "Oh...... It turned out that this second offensive step was to let the helicopter go around the back of Mount Faka to fight! ”
That said, it's very necessary...... First, the back of this Farka Mountain is a dead end of artillery fire, although mortars can hit it...... But it can't be seen, but the helicopter can be seen and hit, and it has undoubtedly become a sharp weapon to attack its backside and accurately and effectively hit the target on the back of Faka Mountain!
Second, the helicopter can also observe the fortifications and personnel deployment on the back of Faka Mountain......
And that's what we do...... After the helicopter circled the back of Mount Faka, it first fired several flares...... Then, while firing rockets, it also provided coordinates for the mortar troops, so that our mortar shells went straight to the fortifications on the back of Mount Faka as if they had eyes!
This can also be said to set a precedent in the history of our army's offensive...... At this time, both the Vietnamese and our armies were very good at building anticline fortifications, and even the hilltop position was built on the side close to the anticline, and the reason for this is not to be explained...... By doing so, you can avoid your fortifications being destroyed by enemy artillery in the first place!
The anti-slope tactic can be said to be very effective, and it can even be said that it is ...... Many of the time, our volunteer soldiers used this tactic to fight head-on with the United Nations forces with aircraft and artillery.
But...... If there is a helicopter...... It will weaken the role of the anticline to a great extent!
Just like we do now...... The helicopter could not only directly attack the enemy's anti-cline fortifications, but also guide mortars to carry out accurate bombardment, so the Vietnamese army's anti-cline fortifications on Phaka Hill were quickly blown up by us.
But that's not what we're trying to do...... (To be continued......)
