Volume 1 Chapter 83 The Chick Breaks Its Shell
I have been idle for a long time before the year, and I no longer plan to give myself a holiday after the new year, but go straight to work.
On the second day of the Lunar New Year, I began to loosen all the land except for the greens and potatoes that still occupied the land, and sprinkled the ashes of plants and trees, sheep dung and chicken manure that I had accumulated on my daily basis.
In addition, I plan to spend another three or five days to open up half an acre of new land, two acres of area is not enough, this season the scale of potatoes and corn will expand a little, especially corn, no matter too much!
While clearing the land and loosening the soil, the seeds of corn, sweet potatoes and vegetables are also cultivated in a small special field, and there is no delay at both ends.
These days, except for the rain, lasted until the beginning of March when most of the seeds were planted in the ground, and although people were a little tired, it was much easier than the work of making bricks and building houses.
At this time, it does not mean that you can slack off, the potatoes are basically ripe, and the greens of the previous season are about to wither, so they will be processed immediately and the soil will loosen the soil and plant a new round of seeds, not to mention that it will be busy in the field for ten days and half a month to finish!
However, all this busyness is worth it, and the total time spent working in the fields every year does not add up to more than three months, but it basically solves my food for a year, even if I don't count any food I am looking for except for the food in the field, it is completely satisfied.
When I was a child, I often felt that the word "farmer" was not very good, how could there be such a lofty profession in the city, but I didn't expect to start my old business in the end, and I didn't have the same idea as I did at the beginning, and even enjoyed it!
On the contrary, I feel that I have worked hard and received a reasonable return, and I cherish every grain of food, because it is full of my sweat.
......
The potatoes are ripe, but they are not a good harvest, because the mildew rain in winter has seriously affected their growth, and it is still a relatively important stage of growth, and it can be seen that the plants are more than ten centimeters shorter than the previous season's exposed plants.
The size of the dug potatoes is also smaller on average, and the area of one hundred square meters is about three hundred catties, and it should be able to reach four or five hundred catties normally.
However, this result is also satisfying, especially the ripening time is relatively good, and the stock of sweet potatoes is running out, which can relieve a large part of my stress!
After about three months of rapid consumption, there are only four or five hundred catties left, but after planting almost two hundred catties in the ground to raise seedlings, there are only three hundred catties left, which can only last for a month, and even after the food given to chickens and sheep for a month, it can't last for a month.
It just so happens that the potato harvest can last for a period of time before eating corn, my idea is very strange, there are six or seven hundred catties of corn stored at home, but I just subjectively think that corn should be preserved as much as possible.
First, because it can be preserved for a long time, and secondly, I also think that the island does not guarantee that the corn will be harvested normally every year, so if you can save some, you can save some, and sweet potatoes are cheaper than potatoes after all!
If it weren't for the typhoon, I wouldn't have made these things that seemed strange before, and I just need to be able to guarantee the next harvest after the harvest every year.
The soil was re-loosened and the ground was re-turned, and most of the remaining greens were disposed of except for the more than a dozen greens that were left for the next season in winter.
I have to say that the ability of sheep is still good, at the beginning two-thirds of the acres of green vegetables after their consumption, only less than a few dozen square meters of area left, the number is only one or two hundred, if there is no green vegetables to help, every winter to sheep mowing grass can drive people crazy!
What's more, in May and June, there are new lambs, and when more than a dozen sheep ask me what I want to eat, I am thinking about whether I will plant two acres of green vegetables in winter to be able to use.
......
A small accident occurred when I was newly cultivating half an acre of wasteland, which delayed my progress for almost a day, and when I was digging forward, I came across a stone, and it was a huge stone pestle in the middle of the ground.
Originally, it was not exposed to the ground, or was covered by a small amount of weeds, and only a small part of it was exposed, but now it was only discovered after the thin soil on top of it was cleared of only a few centimeters.
I have to say that its existence has seriously affected the square appearance of my land, which makes me, a person with mild obsessive-compulsive disorder, a little uncomfortable, and at the same time, it also increases the difficulty of my future homework and the inconvenience of planning.
This stone also has an area of at least 50 square meters, uneven but not too undulating, and are hidden in the shallow place underground, if it is not burned out of the bricks to pave a drying field, it is quite suitable to shape it into a drying field!
It's just that I don't need it much now, and I don't have that leisure, I just dig a trench around it and dig it all around, so I can bypass it when I plant crops in the future!
This season, due to the dispersion of fire by sweet potato vines, the area of green vegetables has dropped compared with winter, and it is still maintained at half an acre, and sweet potatoes and peanuts are still allocated to half an acre.
Corn may be a little more, about 400 square meters, and the rest of the area is not much, mainly allocated to ginger and various herbs and other plants of a wide variety but not large area.
Several major crops are maintained in an area of half an acre is my bottom line, and it is also the red line drawn by the survival needs.
It seems that we have reached a point where the area of the various crops is barely enough, and it would be better if I could expand it by a third more, but my storage methods do not support me, even though a lot of sweet potatoes are rotting now.
So it's just futile to expand the area, and the same is true for potatoes, which are consumed at a slower rate than sweet potatoes, and a small part of the potatoes are dried and sprouted after eating!
......
It's the season of revival again, a vibrant season, the temperature is starting to rise, you can already take off your coat during the day, this season is my favorite, the scenery is picturesque and the climate is suitable!
At the beginning of the year, the chicks hatched finally broke out of the shell and went to the ground, at first I don't remember how long the chick took to hatch, but I estimated that it should be about a month, but I didn't expect the first egg to break on the 20th day!
This group of chicks can be considered lucky to be able to break the shell smoothly, they would not have survived without me, and in the end, not only would not a single chick be able to come out, but also lost fifteen eggs in vain!
Because hens lay eggs in cycles, once this cycle passes, they will be sleepy and do not want to move every day, they just want to stay in the nest.
The first hen began to lay eggs after ten days of hatching, so naturally I was not willing to continue to stay in the nest all day long, if I hadn't found it quickly, the eggs in the nest would have been cold, and all the chicks in the eggs would have been frozen to death.
Fortunately, the other hen also passed the cycle of laying eggs for the first three days and began to stay in the nest every day, which was just right to solve the problem, press it into the nest and obey.
If it weren't for the fact that this hen happened to be able to take over, I would have to work hard for nothing!
It's just that the pheasant is relatively small, and it is difficult for its body to cover the eggs around it for fifteen eggs, so there is not enough temperature, and the eggs around it are frozen alive, and only eight of them are left who successfully break the shell.
The process of breaking the shell is also early and late, only five eggs have been successfully broken, and there is no new egg to break the shell after waiting for me to be a little worried, because it will not break the shell for too long and will suffocate in it.
Impatiently, I began to peel a small hole in the remaining eggs one by one to check the state inside, and finally managed to get the three chicks out of it.
The remaining seven eggs can only be scrapped, which is very distressing, the process of peeling the shell can completely see the state inside the egg, some have grown into a complete state, some have grown half of the body, but they are all cold to death.
Although there is no way to do this, it is impossible to lay a chick with an egg, and it is thankful that there is a 50% success rate, but it is still distressing to watch.
......
The color of the newly produced chicks is the same as that of domestic chickens, which are basically yellowish-white, and as they grow, this tender hair will also fade and become colorful feathers on the large chicken.
The pheasants are very wild now, and when these chickens grow up, I believe they will not be so strange to me, and at least they will be obedient and I would like to see them.
The small size of the chick is only the size of two water bottle caps, and the big chicken can trample it to death with one kick, so the first few days are still a high-risk period.
Sure enough, despite my best efforts, my fears came true, and when I went to check in the chicken pen the next morning, I found that one chick had been flattened, and eight were reduced by one, leaving only seven.
This loss is a pity, but it cannot be avoided, because there is no better way than to let the hens take care of the chicks day and night!
Not only can I not do it, but at the same time it may not be as effective as the hen, and I must face up to the problem of this loss, and a certain loss is inevitable in the process of things.
Since the size of the chicks is so small, food is also a thing that must be paid attention to, so I can only feed them with corn flour from the ground cornmeal sieve, which can be said to be painstaking.
Don't look at the chick that is not as big as an egg, its flexibility is beyond people's reach, I want to catch one and take a closer look for a long time to catch it, which also proves that there is no problem with health, and it is alive!
I can only hope that he will give me two or three left, and that the effort will not be in vain, and now I am not as optimistic as I was at the beginning.
It is reassuring that there were no new chicks lost in the next three days, but it didn't last long, and on the fourth day, another one was trampled to death, and there were only six chicks left!
In the days that followed, there was finally no loss of new chicks, and the number of six had been fixed, plus five for adults, and there were a total of eleven pheasants today, although there was no guarantee that they would eat chicken every three or five days, but it was still not a big problem to slaughter one in a quarter.
