Volume I, Chapter 84: The Great Drought I

In late March, the corn and greens seedlings were ready to be transplanted, and I started transplanting all two important crops into the ground.

This season's peanuts will also be planted in the past two days, which should have been planted in the field when the corn was breeding, but it is a little too late to delay!

The busy state continued until the last crop was transplanted into the field in early April, and the first half of the field work was over, except for the sweet potatoes to be transplanted after another month.

After more than a busy month, I can finally relax for a few days, and it is really a good choice to go out fishing in the season of birds and flowers......

It's nice to have time to fish, but there's been a not-so-good situation that has caught my attention lately.

It hadn't rained in almost a week, the water in the well would bottom out in three days at most, and the pool was close to dry!

Although it doesn't rain for a week, there are always a few times a year, and even more than half a month when it's long, so I didn't care about it at first.

This time, the point of view is the same as before, I believe that it will rain in a few days, and I am used to seeing strong winds and waves and various crises on the island, and it is completely trivial for me not to rain for a few days!

But he said that he was not in a hurry, and the action in his hand was also going on, and the most prescient thing was to scoop all the little water in the well into the water tank and store it.

The water in the well is so weak that it is beyond its means, so it is better to save it than to waste it by immersing it in the ground.

Today's weather is relatively muggy, I thought there would be rain in the last two days, but I didn't wait for a drop of rain after three days......

The tank bottomed out after three days, and the last half of the bucket of water in the well was almost dry after I scooped it into the tank, and I gradually realized the severity of the drought.

For this reason, I had to go to the sea and load some seawater to collect the steam and turn it into fresh water, so as to solve the water problem at home first.

Another problem is also very serious, the drought for ten consecutive days has begun to have a certain impact on the seedlings in the field, and the weaker seedlings are more wilted!

If this continues, many seeds will not germinate, and even after germination, they will not be able to squeeze out of the ground, and the seedlings on the ground may also die.

At this time, I can only hope that it will rain as soon as possible, because I have almost no ability to cope with this situation, and even I can't protect myself!

......

The method of collecting fresh water is still the same as before, with a cloth on the top of the pot, and every few minutes the cloth filled with steam is taken out and wrung out of the fresh water, which is then poured into a bucket specially used to hold water.

It's just that it's more efficient than before, and one pot and clay pot work at the same time, and I can get one bucket to one and a half buckets of water in half a day, which is enough for me and a group of animals to drink water every day.

Although the temperature in April is more than 20 degrees, it is also different from the hot weather in summer, and the water consumption is only about two-thirds of that of summer, otherwise it will be more troublesome.

In the first two days of boiling fresh water, I actually had a little bit of joy, just to take this opportunity to solve the problem of drinking water at the same time, the problem of salt was also solved, plus the few catties I got a few years ago to ensure the amount of consumption this year!

This alternative optimism didn't keep me going long, and five days later, after boiling the coarse salt that had not been further processed, there were several catties of coarse salt, but the sky was still hot and the sun was still hot, and there was no intention of changing the sky!

At this time, I am thinking of the mildew rain last winter, could it be that the rain during this period of time was all over in the first place?!

For me, who believes in science, these are two things that are completely unrelated, and theoretically irrelevant.

But the half-month-long drought began to make me unbearable, and I felt a faint sense of uneasiness in my heart, and this uneasiness continued to grow!

The impact of crops in the field is very large, especially in the early stages of growth that requires double care, and now it is not a problem of a certain degree of yield reduction, and some crops may be replanted......

But some seeds can't be stored for a long time, such as sweet potatoes, and if all the crops in the field die, it means that I will lose them forever!

There are no sweet potatoes left at home, and the last bit was eaten by me a few days ago.

A pillar of food that I was obviously unwilling to lose, and at this point my heart began to become urgent, and I could no longer be as relaxed as I had shown at the beginning!

......

I had to spend more time boiling seawater to collect steam, at least two or three barrels a day, and everything else that had stopped making way for the drought except for the daily chores of feeding the chickens, feeding the sheep and eating myself.

In addition to the fixed amount of water for people and chickens and sheep, I have to use close to a bucket of water every day to save some crops, especially sweet potatoes.

There is no doubt that the crops in the field will be affected to varying degrees, and if it doesn't rain again, they will all die!

At the same time, in order to save every drop of hard-won fresh water, the chicken and sheep pen is no longer filled with water in clay pots, but with water one by one to feed, once a day, if a certain one does not drink, it will not care, this practice can also save about half a bucket of water a day.

It's a difficult stage again, not only people have to suffer, but animals have to be treated equally, after all, the effort and energy spent on them every day for so long is not small, and even tiresome!

On the twentieth day, there was still no sign of rain, and only about half of the crops were still alive in the field, and there were more seeded crops at home: peanuts, corn, and potatoes, for example, I didn't care much, at least they were all dried up.

But the other seeds are less and must be sustained with this bucket of water every day, including one or two hundred sweet potato seedlings, about 100 green vegetables, ginger and a small amount of medicinal herbs.

In fact, it is not as water-intensive as imagined, because there is no need to water it every day, basically the same plant can survive by watering it once every three days.

It is already my limit to be able to save so much, after all, it takes a lot of work to produce two or three buckets of water a day, and I am almost exhausted by boiling water so that all the firewood within two hundred meters of the surrounding area is almost gone.

What is certain is that this year, all kinds of crops will have to be replanted, even if there is no need to plough the ground and loosen the soil, it will take at least half a month.

More importantly, it will face a large-scale reduction in yield, especially in sweet potatoes, which are estimated to be planted no more than 150 square meters, and at the same time, various crops will have different degrees of impact if they miss the best growth time.

Now it just depends on how long this drought will last, and if it is replanted within a month, then crops such as corn and peanuts should not be much worse than last night's harvest!

......

The main thing I can do now is to ensure that the hundreds of crops that have been saved will not be lost, and each loss will hurt me even more, so I have to spend a lot of energy every day to take care of them.

There are less than 200 catties of potatoes left, plus corn and peanuts, there are almost 1,000 catties of reserves, but almost 100 catties of potatoes have to be removed as seeds.

Looking at the fact that there is quite a lot of food being consumed seriously, it seems to be like running water, and it reminds me of the result of settling accounts some time ago, if there is no new supplement within half a year, I can only throttle!

I started to reduce my corn intake, and lately I was mainly eating potatoes, and the food that should have been quite abundant was so much that the pressure came down on me all at once.

The only thing worth looking forward to is tomorrow, no one knows if it will rain tomorrow, now as long as there is a moderate rain, the field can barely save three of this crop, but this tomorrow has not come day after day!

On the twenty-fifth day of the drought, when I woke up, I realized that the situation was not quite right, and a cool breeze was finally blowing outside, which was different from the usual sea breeze, and the sky was not in the usual cloudless state.

Hahaha......

Finally, there are signs of changing the sky, the sky began to slowly spread dark clouds, hoping that a rain has reached the level of wanting to wear, and at night I dream of casting spells in my dreams to open the altar to ask for rain, and I am finally looking forward to it!

Looking at the gradually dense dark clouds, my frown that was worried about the word "Sichuan" was about to be shaped after such a long time, and finally unfolded with the change of weather.

......

Now I'm looking forward to a heavy rain that will save a small part of my dying crops, and a rain that will give them all a lease of life.

Two hours later, the rain was falling and I was finally smiling, and everything was as I expected, and after 25 days of drought, it was finally over today!

In addition to the hundreds of crops I usually raise, a quarter of the total crops in the field are barely alive, but at the last moment, this timely rain can save me at least three days of work, and at the same time the yield of the crops can be saved.

But......

Reality is always so unforgiving, and it won't let me go when it sees my misery.

At the beginning of the rain, a fine light rain sprinkled like chaff, and after twenty minutes the ground was basically wet, but then the wind slowly increased, and the rain began to become unstable.

Less than ten minutes passed, and the dark clouds in the sky were slowly drifting away by the strong wind!

And the rain that only wets the ground does not soak below two centimeters of the ground, this rain is completely meaningless for the crops, and only gives a hope!

I:......?

It was a dream that came to naught, and my face was full of sadness again!

The brow that had been stretched out furrowed again I couldn't figure out why there was such a long drought at sea, and I couldn't figure out how this would be the result of rain every so long.

Everything is not so scientific, but everything also happens, which is puzzling!

And things are going in the direction of bankrupting me and continue to run wild!

If this rain can be like the normal rain before, at least there is still about half an acre of various crops in the field to live, and now it seems that the crops in this land are destined to be powerless, and only the three or four hundred plants that I saved myself remain.

Seeing that the black clouds that were originally overhead were getting farther and farther away from me, and after a few moments they would disappear from sight, and the sun was shining on the earth again, my heart did not feel warm, but felt like falling into a cold ice cellar and half cold!
