Volume 2 Chapter 176 Candles
Eleven sections are cut with a saw at both ends, and all but one section of oak is used to make the lid.
From here, you can see that the oak barrels I am about to make are not the same as I imagined, most of them are made of curved planks of wood one after another.
It's a pity that due to his own technical reasons, he can't do it 100% if he wants to use wooden planks to splice into a tightly knit wooden barrel, and he still has a distance of 108,000 miles to achieve the craftsmanship of the master carpenters!
So I can only choose the least technically difficult, but also the most work-intensive method.
Fifty centimeters of oak is hollowed out in the middle with various metal tools and turned into a container, that is, an oak barrel, in the simplest way!
Before that, you have to reopen the furnace to make iron and make two tools to complete the next task.
One is a small hammer, the axe is still too heavy to strike, ten times, a hundred times is fine, a thousand times, ten thousand times is too laborious.
The other is a flat chisel with a width of two centimeters, which is one of the tools used by carpenters in the past, unlike the chisel used to sink wells.
With a carpenter's chisel, the whole piece of wood can be chiseled off little by little, and as long as you are careful enough, you can still finish the barrel quite exquisitely!
Once the two tools were made and polished, I went straight to work, and the more time I delayed, the more things accumulated.
I am accustomed to all kinds of rough work outside, and it is rare to do this kind of fine work, not only is there no boring feeling at the beginning, but it is very novel, and there is even a tendency to do more and more energy.
As the saying goes, "if you want to do a good job, you must first sharpen your tools", with professional tools, I have to say that the progress is beyond my imagination, only half a day has passed a section of wooden stakes to dig out half of the volume.
Even if the speed is reduced later due to the fear of the bottom being chiseled and refined, at the current pace, it is still possible to make a barrel in a day and a half.
And even if the volume of such a bucket is not as good as a plastic bucket that can hold 50 catties, it is not a problem to hold 30 catties, and it is not a big problem to hold 40 catties in the largest three sections.
If all of them are successful, they should be able to hold 350 catties, so not only will we be able to make the containers needed for this year's sake brewing at one time, but we will also be able to meet them for next year and the year after.
The days passed, and although I experienced a very ordinary typhoon during this period, my progress basically did not stop, and several blood blisters on my hands did not stop my enthusiasm!
Twenty days later, nine oak barrels were lined up in front of me, each with smooth walls that were not inferior to those made of a patchwork.
It is also very easy to dig a groove in the wall of the one-piece barrel, and after drawing the line, chisel it out, and press the lid of the barrel made against it almost perfectly!
It's just a pity that I can't make up a whole number, and one of them was scrapped by my excitement.
Of course, it's a pity, nine barrels are enough, and the capacity of more than 300 catties is still not small!
......
The wine container was solved, but it was a matter of concern, and I was ready to rest for a few days after working as a carpenter for twenty days, not physically tired, but mentally tired.
It's a pity that there are always a lot of trivial things at home, and when I was just free, I found that the clay pot for pickling mutton for the New Year was empty when I wanted to eat meat.
Without the supplement of massive crocodile meat, mutton is consumed very quickly, and a sheep is only thirty or forty catties of mutton, and it is really not difficult to solve it, and if you start to be ruthless, it can all be loaded into my stomach in a week.
Fortunately, there is also a large amount of marine fish and seafood to share the firepower, which reduces the consumption of lamb by an order of magnitude.
Today I am going to slaughter the first unlucky sheep after the year, although the number of sheep is not mentioned, it is still in double digits, especially this year, there are still a lot of lambs.
The killing of sheep is not worth mentioning, and so far there are twenty or thirty sheep slaughtered, and the probability of accidents is infinitely close to zero.
But the accident still happened, the difference is that this time it was not a real accident, but in the process of decomposing the mutton, I saw that some of the structures on the sheep had new ideas, which was surprising!
It is mutton fat, which is similar to lard and butter, and is usually cooked after frying oil, and the taste is better than peanut oil.
So I didn't think about it at all for a long time, and all the dishes went into my stomach, until a new idea just changed its future......
If it weren't for the idea of the lighting problem in the cellar just now, this time the sheep would still not react, and the lighting still couldn't get a better solution, so I could only use Tongzi!
For the first time on the island, the darkness was an object of great fear and hatred for me, and I often thought of a solution to the darkness before going to bed, but to no avail.
As you can see from the results, you can't find a suitable solution, and there is no choice but to fire!
At the beginning, the daily busyness was tiring, and there was no entertainment at night, and since I got used to the darkness, I didn't have many thoughts, and I wanted to sleep every day.
Later, with the improvement of living standards, I occasionally think about dealing with the darkness again, but every time I think of what method to use to generate electricity, I don't care about the fire after getting used to using electricity!
As a result, of course, I was desperate, and it was simply wishful thinking to make a light bulb by generating electricity by myself, and I still thought that candles were more realistic.
I know that sheep fat can make candles, but I am not impressed enough, and I didn't think about this problem when I killed the first sheep, because it was too poor and too lacking in resources at that time!
The reason for the lack of fat made me regard sheep fat as a treasure to replenish fat, more than lean meat, and naturally I could not think of candles.
......
When you don't think of something at the beginning, it will slowly form a habit later, just like a knowledge misunderstanding, after forming a habit, you won't think about it at all, until the inspiration just now reacts.
The awakening gave me a new way of lighting that I knew would work before I made it.
But I also feel my own stupidity, if I could have discovered its use many years ago, it would not have been living in the dark at night, the performance of Tongzi is somewhat inferior, and it is not satisfactory to use!
The amount of mutton fat that a sheep can produce is only three or five catties, and it is estimated that it will shrink by about one-fifth after refining, which is not too much, but it also gives hope.
Three or four catties of mutton fat can make at least fifty candles, ensuring hundreds of hours of use, slaughtering three or four in a year is considered a normal level, and three or four hundred hours of use time is not bad.
It's unlikely that this amount of sheep fat will be used to meet the needs of the whole year, but it is not a problem to use it for activities in the cellar and the occasional night lighting, and the kiriko can also be used for both.
I'm very satisfied with being able to achieve this effect, and when I lose something for a long time, I will be satisfied to have something that is inferior to the previous one, because the mentality is very different.
Thinking of the hundreds of catties of mutton fat that have been eaten by myself over the years, and the six or seven years when I have been in the dark at night, I really want to smoke my two big mouths, greedy and misguided!
If you hadn't been thinking about eating, you might have reacted to it and used candles......
The oil just taken from the sheep is no different from the oil from the pig, it is a yellow-white solid, and the color and state of the refined are not too much, but the attributes are closer to butter, butter and sheep fat can be used to make candles, while lard is not so qualified, at least worse.
The sheep slaughtered today can only be regarded as medium in size, and the output of sheep fat is only about three catties, and the materials that are not rich are even more stretched.
Therefore, there are not many materials for me to squander, and I must try not to waste them in the process of production, and I feel guilty for every little waste!
In the end, I chose a few plastic bottles, cut off the top half of them all, leaving only about five centimeters at the bottom, and less than ten of them could use up the sheep fat and get a few candles.
......
Thanks to the fact that there are enough plastic bottles now, this is a material that I don't have to worry about.
Then find two thick strings and hang them in the middle of the plastic bottle, when the boiled mutton fat cools to room temperature, and then pour it into the bottom of the cut plastic bottle to solidify, and then it is done.
In less than half an hour, the mutton fat is basically solidified, at this time, you should be glad that the mutton fat and lard are different in molecular structure, otherwise it may be very troublesome!
Because its molecular weight is larger, the point of solidification is much higher than the temperature of lard, under normal circumstances, lard can only become a coagulation state below fifteen degrees, and it is difficult to solidify at room temperature of twenty or thirty degrees, or semi-solidify.
The sheep fat is much simpler, and I was worried about the solidification problem, so I put the bottom of the plastic bottle filled with the sheep fat into a few centimeters of water to accelerate the solidification, and the result was completely solidified in less than half an hour.
This means that the mutton fat candle has been successfully made, and the result is of course obvious, it will definitely be lit, after all, the original book was not read in vain.
But to be on the safe side, I lit it up and gave it a try, giving myself a reassurance!
It turned out that I succeeded, but only partially, and the flame ignited for only two minutes before it went out again, and it looked like I had to rework it again before it was completely successful.
The cause of the problem comes out on the wick of the candle, there are two components of the candle, one is wax or grease, and the other is the thread.
Modern candle wicks are generally made of cotton thread or nylon thread or the like, which not only absorbs oil quickly, but also burns hard.
Fortunately, I found it in advance, so I didn't know about its defects when I used it after dark, and it might not only be troublesome to rework, but also to be in a worse mood.
I had to pour the mutton fat back into the pot and cook it again, and I chose a nylon rope with a good color and split it as a wick, and if I didn't succeed, I would really have a headache......
No more embarrassing things happened, because the carefully selected rope finally lived up to my expectations, and I succeeded.
Although I'm not as excited as before because I've experienced too much, I'm still happy in my heart, at least I have a more practical and usable lighting tool than Kiriko in the future.
