Volume 1 Chapter 24 Pottery

The completion of the first room was undoubtedly very happy, and the feeling at this time was like the feeling of finally saving enough money to buy the first house in the city.

But then I had to stop building the second room, because the construction of the first room took up a lot of time and the family ran out of food, and there was not enough food to support the construction of the second room!

The lack of food makes me a little frustrated, and I don't know when this life will improve.

As the season progresses, the temperature gets cooler, and the sea temperature is probably only about 10 degrees Celsius, so it will be very sour to go into the sea, but I want to store some fish in the last part of the winter.

Within half a month, the sea temperature may drop to three or five degrees, and then you don't want to go to the sea at all.

Filling the fish pond is only the most basic goal, and I also want to dry some more dried fish and have food all winter long!

The next fishing work lasted for a week, and a total of 120 catties of various marine fish were obtained, and the harvest was not small.

At a normal level, you can't catch so much, mainly because one of them is full of luck, and you can catch forty or fifty catties of fish in one net.

Just as I was rejoicing at the bumper harvest, a thunderbolt fell on my head again, and the only pot --- stainless steel bucket was burned through!

Not to mention the loss of food cooked inside, the most headache is that the pot is gone!

Its loss hit me as hard as the lighter was scrapped in the first place, and although boiling water and boiling a small amount of things in the last few days can still be solved by reactivating the canning box, but as it stands, the canning box will not last long.

I had to find other ways to solve the problem of kitchen utensils, which was obviously not realistic to rely solely on metal containers picked up by the sea.

There are many materials that can be used to make pots, but there are only a handful of them after excluding metal materials, and the way to solve the tableware problem that I can think of and finally achieve with my technology is pottery.

Pottery, whether ancient or modern in China is a very large industry, its process and requirements are very many, there is confidence in making it is also because my requirements are relatively low, there should be no too difficult technical obstacles.

Of course, the abundance of food is also the reason why I have time to try something new, because it is very complicated and takes a long time to make!

......

I still know most of the process of pottery, but I don't know anything about the heat and length of time of firing, and it may take a lot of trying to achieve the final requirements.

The materials used to make pottery are very particular, especially the white porcelain that has been handed down from ancient times to this day, and the most common material is porcelain stone.

I haven't seen a porcelain stone on the island for so long, and a white pebble similar to the seashore can't be used by me!

After removing this option, the choice of raw materials had to be done with dirt, and there was no choice, and choosing too little was one of the things that had always been depressing on the island.

The most suitable clay for making pottery is clay, and it is difficult for ordinary clay to withstand the calcination of fire, which is also the limitation of making pottery, and it cannot be so arbitrary.

So before I can get pottery, I need to spend a lot of time looking for clay all over the island and hope to get it!

On the first day of the search, I walked through nearly a third of the island and found nothing, which made people wonder if there was clay on the island.

However, this worry did not last long, and the next day I found the presence of clay near the puddle where I had hit the sewage when I first arrived on the island, and if I found the material, if it didn't work out, at least I had hope!!

When all the weeds were cleared from the clay soil, I found that it was about the same size as the vegetable patch.

The only thing I am worried about is whether I will be mistaken, if it is only similar in appearance and form to clay, but not resistant to fire, it will not work at all.

So I'm thinking about digging a basket and bringing it back for verification, and if I'm sure it's okay, I'll do large-scale collection, although the situation is a bit urgent, but it's not yet at the end of the day!

There is nothing to say about the process, but after coming back and picking out all the small stones and debris in the soil, add an appropriate amount of water and knead it repeatedly, and finally turn it into a dough-like shape.

After more than half an hour of actual verification, although I have not personally touched clay before, the feel and viscosity of this soil are obviously better than ordinary soil, and it is almost certain that it is clay.

The next step is to dig up some more clay and come back, and it is expected that the things that were made at the beginning will not succeed due to ugliness and manual problems, and it will inevitably take a lot of production to improve the proficiency before you can be sure of success.

......

I ran more than ten times in a day, and almost brought back hundreds of catties of clay, in fact, four or five hundred catties of clay is not much of a pile, but with my current needs are enough, I can start by making smaller utensils at the beginning, I don't plan to open a pottery shop!

The normal steps of making pottery in modern times are: drying mud, stirring mud, slurry, drying to remove water, kneading mud, and then machine refining mud and molding; It takes three to five months for the mud to weather naturally.

Compared to these professional techniques, I can't wait that long, 10,000 years is too long, and seizing the day is a true portrayal of me now!

In order to make the pottery as soon as possible, I started work after cleaning up, first finding a relatively flat large stone slab, and then passing the mud on it little by little, if there are stones and other sundries, I picked them out, then added water to humidify, and finally kneaded them on the stone slab.

When I felt that the hand was basically right, I first used a sleek wooden stick as a rolling pin to flatten the mud dough like a dumpling wrapper.

After letting them show an arc, it becomes an ugly mud bowl, and then through continuous shaping and improvement, it has a three-point appearance, but I found that the mud is a little too soft, and it collapsed after a few minutes, and I didn't succeed for the first time!

The second attempt was obviously more successful, but only in the bowls, and the other pottery was largely a failure......

After three hours, my proficiency had improved significantly, and the bowl was much faster than it had been at the beginning, and it looked much more pleasing to the eye.

After there were more than 20 pottery bowls on the ground, I began to increase the difficulty of making pottery pots, the main function of the pottery pots I thought that in addition to filling water, it might be cooking, so in order to prevent the problem of cracking in less than two days, its thickness is also extraordinarily thick, close to two centimeters thick.

......

What I didn't expect was a success! It's unbelievably smooth, and it seems that my craft is already very good!

The last type is the Clay Pot, which is currently missing only three types of clay vessels, which are the most difficult of the three to make.

The process was ......, the first one was too ugly and unqualified, and it took two hours, which was too laborious, and the second, third, and fourth ......

The next day, at noon, until the fifth one, I was finally satisfied, and all I wanted was this clay pot for soup, shaped like a small kimchi jar.

Everything is difficult at the beginning, but after making the first one, it slowly becomes more and more handsy, and the second and third are getting faster and faster.

I made a total of eight jars, and in the next few days, I made a lot of basin-sized clay pots and three large vats nearly one meter high.

I have to say that playing with mud is still quite fun, so many adults will find it very interesting when they recall the experience of playing with mud back then, and sigh that the childhood of modern children who do not play with mud is not a complete childhood!

Although the shape is no longer a problem, it is only the first step of the long march, and it will have to be dried for a period of time, during which it must be ensured that the clay does not crack or deform.

It is not impossible that it is not a qualified pottery until it is finally calcined by fire, and the difficulty of firing is particularly huge, and the future is uncertain, and it is not impossible that even dozens of pots and pots on this ground will not be left to the last one!

I don't need to worry too much about the next drying process, but I can't move it when it's just done, put a straw curtain on them before dark to prevent rain, and wait for two days before I move them under the plastic sheet to dry, and it will take at least ten days and half a month to completely dry.

The last step before the pottery kiln is to build supporting facilities, after it is completed, I basically don't need to spend much effort in this regard, I can also let go of other things, this supporting facilities is the kiln for firing pottery!

I think the kiln will not be too big, not only because of the small size and quantity of pottery, but also because it can save me a lot of time, its volume is only one-third of the size of the rural earthen brick kiln, but the top is closed.

Although I haven't dug a kiln, I can barely remember watching a show similar to firing porcelain before, but my memory is a little vague, so I can only do it according to my memory and add temporary play.

......

As for whether the fired pottery can be qualified, I am afraid that only after trying to know, at present, all aspects need to be tested, and the best effect can be achieved through continuous running-in and improvement!

It is most convenient if there are bricks and cement, and I can only dig a cave on a gentle slope at the edge of the clearing.

To put it simply, a small cave is dug and a chimney is put on it, and when the pottery is put into the hole, the hole is sealed with stones to keep the temperature from spreading, leaving only a small hole for firewood.

"Fire" This is a true portrayal of the current mood!!

Digging a hole with a wooden shovel is a very powerless physical work, especially when you dig in under the shade of the big tree next to it, the darker it becomes.

After another week, the first kiln pottery began to be fired, and the most uncertain thing about this process was that I didn't know how long it should be fired, and the failure was predictable, so I only put two pottery pots in it.

I used to refer to the experience of burning bricks and tiles at home when I was a child, and burned it for a whole day, and when the temperature dropped and I opened it again, my face instantly turned black!

There was only a puddle of debris left in it, and it was obviously too long for the first time to declare it a failure!
