Volume 1 Chapter 58 The Kiln
It seems that the progress will have to be accelerated, and the average temperature will drop to less than 20 degrees in another month at most, and even close to 10 degrees at the lowest, and it will obviously not be suitable to live in a cave again!
The night is already different from the previous time, and the cold can be felt very clearly.
Reflected in the action, not only the time to drink hot water has increased, but also at night began to put a woolen blanket under the body, the body is covered with a blanket, the mat is rolled up and stored in the corner, its mission this year has been completed.
After such a long time of air drying, the bricks and tiles have already been as hard as stones, especially the first 1,000 pieces, if it is not necessary to go through the process of firing, I would like to use it directly.
The difficulty lies mainly in the physical requirements, such as loading the kiln, leaving the kiln, burning the fire, and guarding the entrance of the kiln for at least two days and nights.
Each step takes a lot of physical strength and time, which is a big challenge in terms of physical strength, you must know that my current physical condition is not good, mainly reflected in malnutrition!
When installing the kiln, because the ground is more than two meters high from the bottom of the cave, it will be too troublesome to move it to the bottom of the cave once.
Throw it directly into it and it will break, are not so ideal, the way I came up with is to tie two two-meter-long ropes up and down on the side of the back basket, fill it with bricks and then hang it to the bottom of the kiln, then gently pull the rope at the bottom of the back basket, and pour the bricks out of the opening and tilt downward.
Every time there are one or two hundred pieces piled up at the bottom, I go down to the bottom of the hole and place them in turn, as long as the bottom layers are solved, the middle and upper positions are much easier.
When placed, it should also be noted that it is not random to swing, it needs to be carried out layer by layer in accordance with certain rules and sequences, the bricks must be placed below, and the tiles are placed on the upper layer.
It is also necessary to reserve the space of the fire and flue, otherwise the fire below will not burn up, and the flue will not burn up, and the fire will not burn up, and finally the lower one will burn through and the upper one is still in the cold!
......
It is a chore to install a kiln by one person, the weight of a brick is almost five catties, and the weight of transporting dozens or hundreds of catties at a time is only more than ten or twenty bricks, and there is a long way to go......
Back and forth again and again, I felt as if I had just been fished out of the water, but in order to burn a kiln of bricks and tiles as soon as possible, I could only work hard, and at the same time, I was also robbing the weather.
Even so, it took a day and a half to two days to fill and set up, and I began to worry that it might be even more difficult to get out of the kiln than it was to load it.
The full capacity of the cave is almost 2,000 bricks and 1,500 tiles, and the number is still far from building one room, and it basically takes the same number of kilns to complete the first room!
The pressure is still relatively high now, and although I have not encountered serious soil during the time I have lived in the cave, there is always a shadow in my heart that affects me......
Firewood is easier to solve than to install and produce kilns, there are enough trees on the island, and all kinds of trees blown down by the typhoon have already turned into dry firewood after almost a month of dryness.
As soon as you go into the woods, you can almost reach out and pick up a large bundle, and you have no time to pick up firewood while burning the fire, and the rest is just to burn.
The duration of the kiln is more confusing, although I saw it with my own eyes when I was a child, but my memory has been blurred, the reason why I can be so calm is that as long as it does not burn out, even if it is not completely burned out, it can be used.
Of course, although I have this intention in mind, I still try to adjust the state and final result to the best before firing.
No one wants to be the result of nearly a month of hard work, because their slack has gone from complete success to partial success!
The last problem that needs to be paid attention to is the control of the fire, the fire can not be too fierce, too fierce to burn out of the bricks will have tumor scars or even burned into slag, but not too weak, too weak on the tile is difficult to cook, the brick is not ripe can still be used, but the tile can only be reburned or scrapped!
These skills need to be slowly explored in the actual operation process, and the final quality of a kiln brick tile mainly depends on how well the heat is controlled, that is to say, cooking, eating, and sleeping in these two days may have to be carried out at the mouth of the brick kiln......
The preparation before firing the kiln is to feed the sheep first, and since the greens have grown so luxuriantly, there is basically no need to go to the woods to cut the grass.
......
This is also a great liberation for my time, some time ago, mowing the sheep would take up nearly two hours every day.
Then it was to prepare food and water for these two days, and came back with two fish from the fish pond, and picked some greens, made a small amount of tortillas, etc.
During the process of firing the kiln, it is definitely possible to leave for one or twenty minutes intermittently, but thinking of the importance of the first two kiln bricks to the first room, and the importance of the first room, I pay special attention to it, and the preparation work is more sufficient.
After the official start of construction, it was quite fun to simply burn the fire and hand over firewood at the beginning......
Playing with fire is something that many people like to do, and then the novelty is not so fun in the past, and I am too lazy to cook these two days to directly process the fish and put it into the cave to cook it and add seasonings.
Except for the occasional trip to the woods to pick up dry firewood, I hardly left a step, especially at night, and I didn't sleep much, and the state of the next day was to burn the fire while sleeping, and the process was really hard!
After two days, when the top was almost in the same condition, I began to quickly fill the kiln with firewood in the last few hours, which is also called "fire", and the fire time lasted about 2 to 3 hours, which was also the final part of the kiln.
After throwing the last handful of firewood into it, I immediately sealed the door of the kiln with bricks, and pasted it tightly with the thin mud prepared in advance, and the top of the kiln was also blocked with thin mud to prevent smoke and air leakage.
At this time, all the steps of the kiln are over, and you only need to wait for about two days for the natural cooling inside to open the kiln!
......
Thankfully, it didn't rain in the past few days when the kiln was installed and fired, otherwise it would have been a tragedy!
I was not idle while waiting, I continued to go to the sea to fish and seafood, and the current temperature will not sweat even if I stand in the open air for an hour, and there will not be too many opportunities to go to the sea......
The number of fish did not increase much in two days, and only less than 30 catties were caught, but the harvest in other aspects was huge, in addition to the clams and shells that were often caught, there were five sea cucumbers and two large lobsters.
It's been a long time since I've caught a lobster, even if I've been obsessed with its taste, and it's a pity that I haven't been able to get my hands on it because of lack of time and bad luck, but this time I finally caught it again!
Originally, I was thinking of eating one and seeing if I could keep the other for the New Year, but after killing the first one on the day I caught it, my desire was not suppressed.
The second one was successfully eliminated the next day, and their deliciousness was so good that I couldn't bear to stay for another day!!
After eating delicious lobster, I finally have some comfort in the hard work of the past few days, and I feel that I have started to come out of the kiln at about the same time.
After removing the soil from the top layer, what appears in front of you is a patch of cyan, and the bricks in the lower layer are not clear, but the tiles in the upper layer are indeed cyan, and the top two layers are not very ripe, especially the top layer.
There's still some residual warmth inside, but fortunately it's not hot.
Pick up and move away layer by layer, the upper half of the floor is relatively easy, to the middle down is not so easy to operate, you need to hand down the simple ladder to the ground of the hole one by one, and then move away and clean up after reaching a certain number, and so on......
The process was difficult, and it took more than two days to completely remove the bricks and tiles from the kiln, and the success rate was also counted during this period.
The top layer of tiles was not fully cooked, and the bottom two layers of bricks were also partially deformed and could not be used, and finally 1800 cooked bricks and 1200 cooked tiles were obtained, which was generally very successful.
......
It would be a false feeling to see the results of this place without a sense of accomplishment, it is a huge and time-consuming project.
From the very beginning of the kiln to the mud to the billet and then to the final kiln opening, the net working time of the bricks is almost more than half a month, not counting air-drying and doing other things.
Add to that the rain, take care of crops, find ingredients, and patrol the island, and you may only be able to produce one kiln of bricks a month!
It's true that the efficiency is still a bit low, but it's the best result, and I haven't slacked off much during this time!
The first kiln was originally fired immediately after the second kiln, but a sudden rain disrupted my plans, and this rain cannot be said to be bad, because it has been dry for more than ten days, and if it doesn't rain, I will have to worry about drinking water.
It went down for four days, which completely alleviated the problem of drinking water, but at the same time, it was also a little distressing, after all, you can do a lot of things in four days.
A rain also made the temperature drop completely, and the summer heat was no longer there.
A chill forced me to drag out a piece of clothing I got on the boat and add it to my body, and as for last year's winter sweater, I really couldn't be interested in it, and now there are better options!
I took this opportunity to take a good rest these days, and by the way, I knitted a pair of gloves with fine thread, of course, these gloves are extremely simple, and they can't protect the front end of the fingers, but it also makes me happy, and I finally don't have to be so wasteful in the future!
It's been so busy for a few months that it seems that I can only relax on a rainy day, and I'm busy doing things when it's sunny, and I just hope that this busy state will end soon!
Originally, it was banana picking season, but after the typhoon devastated several banana trees, one was blown off, and the other two were also bare, and not a single banana was eaten this year.
In addition, for some reason, the mango tree produced very few mangoes this year, only twenty or thirty in total, and all of them entered my stomach during the time when the stone mill was made.
After the rain, a large puddle was formed in the place where the bricks were made and the mud was dredged, and there was no shortage of water, so that the bricks and tiles could be continued to be made.
If possible, I wanted to fire the second kiln together, but when I saw that there were only 1,000 air-dried bricks and 500 tiles left on the ground, I had to give up first.
