Volume II: Chapter 171: Ice
It took only half a day to dig and dump saltpeter at the top of the mountain, and when I went down, I was stunned when I got to the bottom of the mountain.
The saltpeter at the foot of the mountain is piled up into a small mountain, and the preliminary estimate is more than 1,000 catties.
I'm so happy, if I had been stupidly transported down like the beginning, it would have taken at least three to four days to finish the pile, but now it only takes half a day, and it only takes two days to transport it home.
This is not the most important thing, not having to go up and down the mountain repeatedly is the most worry-free for yourself, and the flat road is much easier to transport!
If you frequently go up the mountain to transport stones down, and then keep going up the mountain, I believe that it will not be long before you will have a psychological shadow on climbing the mountain, and then you will no longer think about making ice.
When something is too troublesome and the reward feels like it's not as good as paying, then the thing will definitely not last long.
After moving all the saltpeter at the foot of the mountain home, all that remains is the final step of crushing the saltpeter and putting it in the cellar to let it come into play.
In addition to the fact that the cellar was not yet fully operational, there was also the problem of containers, and I did not expect that there was still a crucial thing missing.
Of course, there are a lot of small containers, but unfortunately no matter how much they are, it is useless to use them to produce a little edible ice, and it is quite inappropriate to use them to cool down the cellar, and it is estimated that the limited ground is not very effective to put clay pots one by one!
The pottery bowl is not easy to use because of the small opening, it is tailor-made for corn and peanuts, suitable for only the pottery jar, but unfortunately there are only three or four mouths, of which the water tank can not move.
But at this point, I had to empty the clay jar and move it into the cellar to test its effect, and I also wanted to know what kind of effect the combination of cellar and ice would have!
The next step is to smash the saltpeter, preferably to the size of a thumb, after rolling into powder, there will be a lot of loss of water.
If the size is too large, the effect will be weakened, after many tests or choose a compromise treatment, the effect of rolling into powder is definitely better, but the workload can also increase a lot!
Fill the pot with saltpeter smashed by most of the pot, preferably just enough to submerge the saltpeter so that it can react sufficiently, and place another pot filled with water on the surface of the vat.
If it goes well, not only will the water in the pot condense into ice, but even the water in the pot on the surface of the water may turn into ice.
......
The water that reacts directly with saltpeter cannot be directly imported because of health concerns, but the water in the clay pot can, it is not in direct contact with saltpeter, and it is still clean fresh water!
This is the only way I want to get edible ice or ice water, and I don't have the confidence to drink it in direct contact.
I didn't have to wait long for the clay jar to fill it with water, and I couldn't wait long to feel the subtle changes, and the room temperature water poured into the clay jar was slowly cooling down, and I had to feel the wonder of the world......
After a few minutes, the water temperature dropped several degrees from when it was first poured in, and a quarter of an hour there was a hint of icy water, although it was still very slight, but it was only a matter of time.
The principle of saltpeter ice making is actually very simple, that is, a large amount of heat in the water is absorbed by saltpeter, and then the temperature of the water naturally continues to drop!
I actually want to stay next to the clay jar and wait for all the water inside to turn into ice, but after staying for a long time, it is also a little boring, after all, it is not a matter of a while.
So I was still busy outside, and only occasionally went in to take a look at it, and when an hour had passed and I entered the cellar again, I was stunned by the state of the clay jar.
There was a thin layer of ice on the surface of the water, even if it was about the thickness of a piece of paper, but the journey of 10,000 miles began with a single step, and I was very hopeful that I would reach the state I wanted to be.
I have to marvel at the fact that chemistry is a magical subject, and I regret that I didn't learn it well in the first place, but if I had learned it better, I might have been able to make other powerful tools or superb effects!
At the same time, I was secretly cheering up in my heart, hoping that it would work harder to make all the water condense into ice, so that it could completely turn the cellar into a real refrigerator, and the effect would be countless times stronger than before!
My high expectations paid off, and when I re-entered the cellar three hours later, I was greeted with a chill.
Although the symptoms were still mild, and entering the cellar from the outside temperature magnified the chill effect many times, it was also an excellent phenomenon, at least proving that it was feasible to cool the cellar with saltpeter!
......
The drop in temperature made people more interested in the water in the pot, so they quickly rushed to it to check on the situation.
The water in the clay jar was very different from two hours ago, from a thin layer of ice to a hard block of ice, and the ice on the surface of the water had condensed to a thickness of more than ten centimeters.
It is believed that over time, the water in the middle and lower parts will also turn into ice quickly, and even about half of the water in the clay pot placed on the surface of the clay pot has become ice, and the clay pot is even deeper into the ice of the clay pot, and it takes a lot of effort to take it out!
Ahaha...... I got the ice, and the refrigerator I've been missing is almost there, it's a great thing!
I couldn't calm down for a long time, all my efforts were in vain, and all my expectations became reality......
At this time, the temperature is not low, and the ice water in the clay pot does not feel cold at all, and the big gulp is only pleasant, and every pore of the body is exuding pleasure.
The current season is not the best match for it, and the best season is in July and August, and the thought of eating popsicles with brown sugar and drinking ice water in the hot summer is the real fairy days!
Even though the hot summer makes it much harder to freeze the water, and it is much harder to eat popsicles, it is no problem to drink ice water.
Moreover, ice water is only one of the functions, and the low-temperature cellar can preserve all kinds of perishable ingredients and prolong the storage time.
When you can't bear it in summer, you can hide in the cellar to enjoy the coolness, and the thought of staying in the cold cellar in the hot summer can't suppress the excitement in your heart!
Saltpeter has worked so hard for me that I want to cry out loud when I find it!
......
Of course, it's also a lot of work for me, and every new discovery adds to my workload, but it can be a little more troublesome.
First and foremost is the need to collect and transport saltpeter back, as the condensed ice will redissolve as saltpeter becomes less effective.
After losing its effect, the saltpeter will also be scrapped, and after verification, it is found that the effect of the second time is far less than the first, and I can't toss it repeatedly, so it is better to take the time to get the new saltpeter with the best effect.
The second big trouble is related to containers, and this time the problem of insufficient number of ice-making pottery is highlighted again, and it is very prominent!
Among them, the lack of large clay jars is the most serious, the number of large clay jars is not enough, one in the kitchen, another one in the ice, and the rest of the grain used to hold corn and peanuts is completely insufficient.
What's even more embarrassing is that a large clay jar is not enough to make ice in the cellar, and the refrigeration effect is far from the effect of a refrigerator, even if it is only used to keep it fresh.
If the outside temperature is about 30 degrees at this time, it is estimated to be about 20 degrees without this large tank, and the cooling effect brought by this large tank of ice can barely reach less than 15 degrees.
The effect of cooling down by five degrees is good, but the temperature of fifteen degrees is useless to prolong the freshness of ingredients, which is better than nothing!
As the temperature rises, the temperature of the cellar will rise, and it may be close to forty degrees in a month or two, and it is estimated that it will rise to close to twenty degrees in the cellar, which is still the effect of using ice.
Without ice, it is estimated that it will be close to 25 degrees during the day, and my goal is 5 degrees, which is still 108,000 miles away!
The space that was originally quite rich was only temporary, and after a period of time, most of the things were moved in, and the clay used to make pottery was not so easy to transport, otherwise I would have to make ten or twenty vats, and put five or eight in the cellar, so that the temperature inside would drop to zero!
However, due to various realistic circumstances, a considerable degree of compromise has to be made, especially the lack of space also limits the play.
......
After the compromise, I thought it would be more appropriate to put two more pots, and three large pots working at the same time could at least keep the temperature within 10 degrees for a long time.
That way, even if there is no guarantee in the hot summer, there is no problem in other seasons, and in the winter, it may even drop below freezing.
Now it is not possible to meet the minimum standard, and there is no extra clay pot to vacate, but it needs to be replenished one or two bites, because after three months, the corn and peanuts will be ripe and a large number of containers will be used!
Seeing the huge gap, it is necessary to make at least three to four large pottery jars to meet the requirements, and if it is a semi-finished product, it is estimated that more than six will be needed, because its success rate has not been high, and half of the success rate is considered lucky.
Even now, I don't know how many times I have fired pottery, but I don't have much confidence in the success of the pot, and sometimes even the slightest carelessness in the placement can lead to failure.
For the next two or three days, I have been circling around the clay pot, from the initial mixing mud with water to the finished product, and it takes about three hours to make a mouthful.
When the six-mouth vat is finally completed, I stopped the plan to continue making, and the six-mouth is no more and no less, and it can be divided into two kilns for firing!
Fortunately, I still have a few hundred catties of clay stored at home before I start, otherwise I would have been extremely reluctant to return to the island to transport clay, and it will take at least two trips to bring back enough clay for six clay jars.
At this point, I can only hope for the success rate of the kiln, and I don't want to go back and forth to the island to transport clay.
It's a pity that the cellar will have to go through a period of inspection, and it can only be put into formal use after the inspection period, otherwise it should be more atmospheric to make ice inside.
But it's nothing, it just takes a short time for the clay jar to dry, and it will be even more happy if it is put into use in a similar time!
