Volume 2 Chapter 172 Busy Weaving
In mid-May, a rain disrupted the rest of the plan, and the hateful thing was that it planned to rely on it and escalate an ordinary rain into a rainy season!
In the past two years, there have been only a handful of droughts, but the rainy season has been more frequent, and it has caused me a lot of trouble.
Maybe God just wants to lock me in the house and make it a little harder to survive......
Well, it worked, and I did spend most of my time in my room, but as long as it wasn't up to a month or two, it had little to no impact on survival.
In addition to taking care of the chickens and sheep on a daily basis, I was not idle during the time I spent in the house.
Don't be busy praising me for being self-conscious, I won't be too self-conscious, the main thing is that after two days of leisure, I find that it is too boring, it is better to find something to pass the time.
In the end, after fumbling for a long time, I didn't think about what to do, so I simply knitted the stored linen thread into coarse cloth, and if the mountains of flax thread were piled up all the time, it would be wasted.
The difference is that I didn't plan to make clothes, and the linen harvested last year didn't feel like it was fully ripe.
Simply wait two months for this year's linen to mature, and then use the new linen to make clothes, which are piled up in the room for another purpose.
The thing I'm going to make this time isn't as important as clothes, but it has some uses, and it's --- sails!
In terms of practicality, the role of the ship is getting smaller and smaller, and it is estimated that it will not be used ten times a year, but each time it can torture people to death.
Even if it is a new ship, it is very difficult to sail in the direction I want on the vast sea, it is like wrestling with a giant, and it will take hours at a time, and the fatigue and sadness are not enough for outsiders!
After experiencing the hardships of rowing by hand a few times, I felt that it was still necessary to make a sail, and I thought that in the days when there were sails, I thought that it was difficult to row by hand.
I was impressed, and naturally I was more motivated to do this, and it just so happened that a rainy season gave me time.
......
Sails are actually very troublesome, even more so without plastic sheeting and other materials, and they have been trying to solve it before, but it has not worked.
It was only recently that I realized that I could choose to weave a coarse cloth of three to five square meters with linen thread, just like weaving clothes.
As long as a large area of fabric is relatively densely woven, it can still be turned into a sail like the original plastic sheet, although the various properties are not the same, but the effect is not different.
Luckily, it's made in a similar way to weaving, otherwise I might not have had that ambition!
Another source of confidence is that the technique can be relatively coarse, and it is perfectly possible to twist the linen thread to a thickness similar to that of wool, and then weave it like a sweater, rather than as meticulously and inefficiently as weaving clothes.
It's just that the gap should be denser, otherwise it will be permeable, and the purpose of the sail is not to let the wind pass through, otherwise it will not produce enough force.
But I believe it won't take much time, and the efficiency will certainly be much faster than weaving clothes, after all, the diameter of the thread is three to five times thicker than the thread used to weave the garment.
As expected, the progress of knitting is faster than when knitting sweaters, and the reason for this is that although the technique is skillful, it is also worth rejoicing!
The linen thread was fully processed as early as last year, so it can be used directly to save a lot of time.
The progress of the first day was not hurried, first it took two hours to split the flax thread evenly, then twist it into a thin string, and then spend seven or eight hours to weave the cloth, and at the end of the day, it could weave one-third of the square meter area.
The rest of the time is almost the same as the rhythm of the first day, two hours of twisting rope, seven or eight hours of weaving, compared with the previous results of canvas, I think it will not take half a month to make it.
It is not cost-effective to get a sail in half a month, especially after seeing the efficiency of modern society, there is nothing to be proud of.
But a new sail can last at least three years, and if you're lucky, five years is fine, and you're not in the modern world!
There is not much clay left in the family after the new six large clay jars are made, and it is impossible to say when they will need to return to the island to transport the clay.
With my character, I will definitely have to transport back more than 1,000 catties at one time, and it will take at least five round-trips to reach the goal, and it is the right time for it to be put into use.
The progress of the sails changed day by day, but the outside of the house was always the same, and it was still drizzling without wanting to stop, and occasionally there was a heavy rain.
......
Luckily, it wasn't a drought, otherwise I might have been busy enough, and at some point, the crops in the field might have needed me to water and save my life every day.
And if it rains, you don't have to worry about it, the consequences are either not very impactful, or the impact is very large, the only thing the same is that I can only watch and can't help!
Fortunately, the rain was not in the planting and harvesting season, which is the time of headaches......
My crow's beak seemed to have worked before, and it may have been that I had a lot of experience with the rainy season, and it was still raining outside on the tenth day.
Ten days of fruitful results, the area of the sails has begun to take shape, but I am not happy, because my fear is beginning to take shape, if this rain is a month or two before the crops in the field will be lost.
Fortunately, it doesn't rain all the time, and there are occasional rain breaks, but the lack of continuous sunny weather is always unreassuring, and reality has taught me not to be happy too soon!
Half a month later, the rain was still falling, and the area of the canvas seemed to be close to the area I expected, which was already more than four square meters.
Looking at the small area of the cloth, the weight in the hand is not small, more than ten catties.
However, when used as a sail, there seems to be no difference between ten catties and one catty, and its function is to create resistance to the sea breeze, and these resistances act on the ship to propel the ship forward.
Even if it's just a hundred catties, as long as the area is large enough, it can still generate enough power.
But that's all, there is no room for expansion, its size and shape are almost planned before it is made, enough to meet the current needs.
Since the length and width of the ship are slightly smaller than those of previous ships, the pillars on the ship are not too high, and if the canvas area is too large, if there is a violent wind in an instant, the resulting force is likely to capsize the ship!
This situation is a bit more than I expected, and I didn't even think to weave a sail out of linen before I built a new ship, and now it's obviously too late to regret it.
......
If you knew this, you should have built it to the size of the previous ship, and it would be safer at sea with sails.
The current size is somewhat risky to use, when encountering windy weather, you must remove the sails at sea, fortunately, there are few opportunities to go to sea now, you can choose to go to sea with calm and sunny weather, the problem is not big, but it is a pity!
The rain kept falling, the atmosphere was very unpleasant, and the rain did not abate, which made me more and more worried.
The rain that has been falling for too long not only makes the house very damp and reduces the crops in the field, but also makes sleeping comfortably no longer a pleasant thing, but a disguised torture!
Whenever you dry the wet carpet in one night, and before you even start enjoying the day, you have to roll over and get out of bed and leave it, and when you need it again in the dark, it will be the same as before, which is a real headache.
For this reason, I had to build a small charcoal fire in my room with a clay pot, the purpose of course to dispel the dampness, although it was not possible to get rid of it completely, but at least it would be good to reduce the dampness.
After all, too humid environment is harmful to people's bodies, and it is easy to get sick when sleeping on a wet blanket at night, which is not what I want......
The linen sail has already been made, and it is only necessary to wait for some time to take some time to erect the capitals on the ship when the weather clears, and then attach it to verify its usefulness.
That's the good news, the bad news is that you can't use it anymore to pass the time, and rainy days are pretty boring.
Although I have been dealing with flax for nearly half a month, I still choose to continue to deal with it, because there is no other work to do!
I'm going to make the next clothes, and I only made two sets of clothes last year, and only one set for the upcoming summer, and one or two sets of clothes are not enough for the high consumption of the island.
......
There are always two sides to everything, and it's really irritating to be trapped in my room by this rain, especially after the standard of living has improved, I like to let go of myself more and I don't want to be locked up.
But it is not small, and the very important but time-consuming tasks such as weaving sails and clothes are not usually done at all, because most of the sunny day is busy with other things.
Only making them when it rains can not only kill the boring time, but also indirectly improve the progress of the work, and the time is not wasted.
Of course, this is just self-comfort, otherwise what else can I do, the time I was locked in my room delayed many other things!
God showed mercy and did not continue to torment me, and the rainy season finally stopped on the twentieth day.
The feeling of the long-lost sun shining on the earth again makes people feel how beautiful, but it is a pity that this beauty will not last long and will disappear.
It's about to be the middle of June, and in another month it will be a day of burning fire, and even the sun is dazzling the day after the day after the sunny day, and the outdoor activities are not as comfortable as before!
Although the rainy season is over, its aftermath is not over, and the dry food stored at home, such as peanuts and corn, will have to be dried for two days before they can be stored again, otherwise it will not be long before they will be eaten and rotted by insects.
After inspecting the crops in the field, it was found that there was a lot of loss, and some of the more fragile seedlings were directly watered by the rain, but fortunately they were not destroyed by the typhoon, and the impact on future yields was small.
In addition, it is time to check the cellar, and I believe that this rainy season is the best way to test its qualification.
At the same time, a large clay jar in the cellar is also quite interesting, I haven't taken care of it for more than 20 days, and I want to know what the ice inside has become, and whether it will gradually melt away with the weakening of the effect of saltpeter!
