Chapter 313: Flames
As the son of a Freljord healer, Quigennow was born an outlier. His mother's meager knowledge of magic and herbs allowed her to earn a living on the fringes of the coastal village of Rigun.
Their few friends came and went in a hurry. Although Keegan was still a child at the time, he understood early on that his father was a vicious robber, and it was because of his father's identity that his mother was shunned. The villagers called him "the bastard of robbers".
Keegan's loneliness and resentment burned faintly in his heart, and he often became irritable and perverse.
In a cold winter that seems to never end, after several years of suffering, the frail mother died.
As Keegan tossed her ashes, he thought of the people she had spent her life healing. No one came to pay their respects. He knew that they wished he would disappear into the cold wind with his mother.
He will fulfill them, but he must first complete his revenge. He burned down the village and disappeared into the night, leaving himself with a scar that would never heal.
Keegan wanders the frozen tundra of Freljord. He told himself that he was looking for his father, but deep down, he was looking for a friend or, at least, a friendly face. His quest was in vain, so he went into a cave and prepared to die.
But what he was waiting for was not death, but another anomaly. The mysterious magician Ruiz saw potential in this half-frozen young man and took him as an apprentice.
The pair experienced many stumbles, with Keegan's immature and wild magic disheartening both of them, and Ryze's demands for patience and humility often falling on deaf ears.
Unfortunately, Keegan's cultivation has always been secondary, and Ryze has always been most concerned about his original mission.
He had been searching for and hiding a power large enough to destroy the Runeterra, the legendary world rune.
After tracking down a fragment of runes, Keegan was confronted with the same temptation that had caused too many people to lose their minds. Runes are the source of all magic in this world, and he chooses to claim this power for himself, despite his mentor's warnings.
Ruiz was forced to witness his own defeat, to see his apprentice burned by primitive magic, and Keegan's soul devoured.
At that moment, a new soul was born, not the young man that Ruiz had rescued in the snow and ice, nor the mage Freljord whom he had once regarded as a friend.
This and furious vengeful spirits walked in the realm of mortals, and is now known to the world as Brand. Brand cursed his former master, and everyone else who stood in his way from seizing the rune. Brand flicked the long whip of the flame of the magic flame, and Ruiz barely managed to save a life.
Hundreds of years have passed since that day, and Brand has lived like a lawless wildfire, taking it and never returning anything back to the world.
Sometimes, he's a fiery meteor streaked across the firmament, and sometimes he's sunk into a long hibernation on the icy earth, waiting for that unique magical aura to lead him to another world, and if it really gets him what he wants, then only a handful of people in the rune lands will have the power to stop him.
Shortly after his coronation, King Gavin III addressed the people of Demacia. Although there were many enemies beyond the borders of their proud kingdom, some nobles began to fight for secession, and some families even organized private armies in exchange for the favor of the new king.
This situation cannot be tolerated. Unable to allow such a dangerous antagonistic relationship to continue, Gavin declares that he wants to end the struggle through marriage.
His bride, Lady Catherine, was beloved by the populace, and there were rumors in the court that the two secretly loved each other. The bell rang for a day and a night during the celebration, and at the end of that year, the royal family announced that the king and queen were about to welcome their eldest son.
But all the joy dissipated when Catherine died in childbirth. The baby born was named after his father's family and rightfully became the heir to the throne of Demacia.
In the midst of joy and sorrow, King Gawain III vowed never to take a concubine, and that all his hopes and dreams for the future of the kingdom would be inherited to his only son.
The little prince Gavin, who has never had the memory of his mother, grew up in the court, and was served and protected at every moment of his life.
The king insisted that he receive the best Demacian education, and at a very young age began to learn the moral value of charity, the solemn burden of duty, and the honor of devoting oneself to the people.
As he grew up, Jiawen later became acquainted with his father's manager, Zhao Xin. This faithful guardian from Ionia taught the prince more of the world's theories about spiritual powers, as well as the various arts of war.
While conducting military training, Prince Gavin met the stunned boy of the Crownguard family, Galen. The two men were about the same age, and they soon became inseparable, and Galen admired Galen's sheer determination and will, while Galen admired the prince's tactical instincts.
When Gawain reached the right age, his father gave him the glorious title of general. Although no one felt the need for the heir to the throne to go to war himself, Gavin was determined to prove himself, with or without the blessing of the king.
The lands on the other side of the Shining Mountains have long been contested by Noxus, making the frontier almost lawless, with foreign bandits and warlike hordes threatening many of Demacia's allies.
The prince vowed to stabilize the region again. Many years ago, his grandfather was murdered by an ugly Noxian barbarian, the first confrontation between the two nations in the South. Now, that insult is finally going back.
Reports of successes for his army were frequent, but he was deeply disturbed by the massacres he witnessed in the border town. When he heard the news of the fall of the Gate of Sorrow, instead of following the advice of his lieutenants, he decided to continue his march into the territory of Noxus.
Inevitably, after the battle force was too scattered, Gavin was surrounded by the Noxian warband, and was defeated before he reached Triwell.
Refusing to surrender, the prince and several other survivors fled into the forest, where they were followed by enemy scouts for several days. Eventually, Gavin was shot in the side by an arrow and lay down next to a fallen tree, going back and forth between unconscious and conscious.
He was completely devastated. He failed his family, his kingdom, and his fellow brothers.
There is no doubt that he would have died there alone, if it had not been for Sylvana. Somehow, this strange purple-skinned woman took Gavin all the way back to Demacia, to the ancient castle of Lenwall.
There, she proved herself to be a friendly and valuable companion during the days of the prince's recovery. Although her bizarre appearance was intimidating, the commander of the castle garrison could not deny that she saved Gavin's life and contributed greatly to the royal family.
