Chapter 4: Escape
"Master Bruce"
Alfred's voice interrupted the slightly awkward atmosphere in the Batcave, and both Barbara and Bruce turned their heads to look at the older man at the same time.
"What happened? Ah Fu"
"I'm not quite sure sir. I just think it's a little weird."
Alfred didn't know how to describe the sense of disobedience he felt from Jason.
Polite, and well-bred honorifics are heard from the mouth of a street child, and it feels so disagreeable, there is an inexplicable sense of incongruity.
After listening to Alfred's words, Bruce fell into deep thought.
Barbara went to great lengths to convince Bruce to give up on Jason, if only out of sympathy, then Bruce Wayne could easily find a reason to send Jason to boarding school, rather than having to use this method that was quite dangerous for their status.
The alarm in the Batcave suddenly sounds, interrupting Bruce's thoughts.
The eyes of the three people were attracted by the surveillance screen that popped up on the computer at the same time.
A boy dressed in casual clothes was trying to climb over the outer walls of Wayne Manor. He had no idea that his actions had triggered the most stringent surveillance system in the manor, the walls of Wayne Manor were a little too tall for the child's physique, and the boy struggled to hang his left foot on the wall, and as he barely climbed over the wall, a shiny thing slipped out of his pocket.
The boy sat on the wall and looked at the falling object, as if hesitating to pick it up, but eventually he gave up on the object and climbed out of the wall, and the figure became smaller and smaller in the surveillance camera.
“... I don't think he needs you at all."
Barbara said unhappily that if she was not mistaken, the thing that fell out should be a tableware made of sterling silver from Wayne Manor.
Bruce ignored Barbara's words and asked Alfred a question instead:
"Ah Fu, have you prepared clothes for him?"
"Yes, Master Bruce, I have prepared a set of casual clothes, a set of pajamas, and a set of formal clothes to be worn at Master Jason's entrance to school."
Alfred's preparations were always so swift that all the preparations were in place before Bruce acted.
“... I'll go out for a while."
Bruce takes off his bat helmet and prepares to go out as Bruce.
"Bruce! You could have found another way, why do you have to take him to your side? ”
Barbara understood Bruce's purpose, of course, but she couldn't reassure the kid who had been crawling at the bottom of Gotham.
"Barbara, what do you think of Jason?"
Instead of refuting Barbara's words, Bruce asks her a question.
“... Forehead...? ”
Not understanding why Bruce asked, Barbara could only look for answers with her eyes.
"That kid is smart enough, and he's vigilant and persevering enough, and if he is allowed to grow up in Gotham, it's hard to say how dangerous he'll be in the future, and I can't let that happen."
“...... Okay, but that kid's vigilance is also effective for you, he doesn't trust you, what are you going to do? ”
Barbara didn't refute Bruce's analysis, the kid's shrewdness was annoying.
Bruce didn't answer her question, and after taking off his armor, he had changed into casual clothes, changed from the terrifying Dark Emperor to the well-known Gotham Baby, and then left Wayne Manor in a car that was very much in line with Gotham Baby.
"Cut, dropped one, that's all that's left"
Jason hid in a corner, pulled out a silver knife fork and spoon from his pocket, and counted them one by one.
When the tableware collides with each other, it makes a crisp collision sound, indicating that its ingredients are very pure.
“... If these are sold, they should be able to last for a while, worthy of Bruce Wayne, the tableware at home is made of sterling silver.... Maybe I should buckle a few of the gems on the head of the bed, because that thing is not easy to deal with..."
Jason muttered as he tucked the cutlery back into his pocket, pulled up his hood, and cautiously walked down the alleyway he knew to the little underground shop where the stolen goods were sold.
This kind of black shop is everywhere in the old neighborhood of Gotham, Jason knows his condition, he doesn't expect the cutlery made of sterling silver to get him back the equivalent of money, but at least give him a guarantee of a few days of food should be fine, Jason prayed as he pushed open the door of the small shop.........................
"Cut, old immortal!"
Coming out of the black shop, Jason cursed. He hadn't missed the greedy glance from the black shopkeeper's thin eyes as he pulled the silver cutlery out of his pocket, but even then he only got $50 in his hand.
Jason, who had stolen all sorts of things, knew quite well that those silver cutlery were definitely more than that, but what else could he do? He's just a kid, and it's good enough that the old man is willing to give him money, and he's met more than once that kind of bastard who takes things and doesn't give them.
Jason grabbed the money he had just gotten his hands and began to look for a place to stay tonight.
"Hey, do you need a ride?"
A car pulled up next to Jason, its ornate body out of place on the dilapidated alleyway. There was a crack in the glass window, but it was enough for Jason to see who was inside.
He turned around and tried to run, but the caller only said a word to discourage his intention of escaping, and his steps were pinned to the spot.
"I found you so easily"
The man in the driver's seat smiled at Jason with a harmless face.
“.... You're going to take me to the police? ”
“.... Well, can you come up first? You know, here... Well... It's not safe."
Bruce's smiling face made Jason feel very uncomfortable, but he still obediently sat in the car. Bruce drove his car away from the dimly lit alley with one foot on the accelerator.
“... How do you know I'm there?"
“.. You guess"
Gotham Baby's mischievous smile made Jason feel very, very uncomfortable, he had seen a lot of those faces, like a perfect mask and face blending into one - very hypocritical.
"Okay, let's stop teasing our little friend, it's Batman who asked me to take care of you"
"You know that vampire??!!"
Jason was taken aback by Bruce's answer.
“... Haha, vampires? Sort of, it has something to do with him, I heard about your situation, so there is no way to transfer you to the welfare home, so I arranged a boarding school, you can live there all the time, and I will be responsible for all the living expenses and tuition fees, until you graduate and you should be an adult, and wait until then.. Well.. You can do whatever you want... What do you think? You... I'd love to get out of this situation."
“... It's true? ”
Jason couldn't believe it, he never believed that these so-called philanthropists were really caring, they must have some plan, just like that guy.....
“.. What benefits do you get by doing this??!! ”
“.... Well, if I said it was because I was a very caring person, you wouldn't believe it. Well, it's Batman's please. If you don't believe me, at least believe him."
Bruce turned his head and smiled at Jason, who realized that he didn't hate Bruce's smile this time....
