Chapter 12: Unknown Ruins
There are many snakes and insects in the depths of the dense forest. Julius took a small scythe in his hand and cut off the branches and leaves in front of him so that he could make a rudimentary path that could be walked. His ears were filled with the sound of insects, and in this kind of sealed jungle, the sound of insects seemed to carry a hot and humid temperature, and oil was about to bubble up in people's ears. It's afternoon now, and it's getting darker in the forest, which isn't sunny yet.
In front of Julius was Olga, and behind him was Pattin. The three of them formed a column, each with a tool for cutting down rhizome obstacles, in order to carve a way forward.
Lulunaka wasn't in Julius' sights, or rather, no one knew where she was now. She just left a sentence of "just go in this direction, don't get lost", walked to the front by herself, and then quickly disappeared in front of their eyes. No one knew how she managed to run so quickly in such a place where trees and plants were growing wildly, and now she was gone.
After burning down that den of thieves, another half a month has passed. A few days ago, Lulunaka, who had only been heading north, had finally decided to enter the forest, and asked Olga to let go of her horses and enter the forest with her simple luggage. The place where they entered the forest was the border where the east and north were connected.
Lulunaka's whereabouts are mysterious, and for Julius, it might be a little better. Ever since he burned down the den of thieves who sold people as commodities and killed a bunch of pirates and their bosses, Julius had been unable to hold her head up in front of Lulunaka. Lulunaka said that he barely passed, which was already a lift-upβif Olga hadn't saved him, he wouldn't have been just blindfolded in the sand. Olga avoided the worst.
Lulunaka said of Julius one night, "Without Master Olga, I'd probably have one more corpse to burn." No, because I said that if Roque could kill you, I would let him go, that is, there was no more to deal with, no less, still the same amount, but there might be a little difference in weight. A skinny child who is still underage and a strong warrior who is an adult, of course, the latter is heavier. β
That night, Lulunaka was lying on the branch of a tree and said this to Julius below. Lulunaka was telling the truth, and Julius didn't have any reason to refute it - as for why Lulunaka didn't save him, Julius didn't have the courage to say such a thing. He felt that if he said such a thing, maybe Lulunaka would give up on him as a person.
And what Lulunaka said did make sense, if he hadn't slackened, Roque would have been a dead man a long time ago. He had the ability to take out Roque on his own, only to end up letting Olga clean up the mess.
Julius, thinking absentmindedly about the events of these days, unwittingly bumps into Olga's back. He looked up, only to notice that Olga had stopped.
He didn't ask Olga why he stopped, because the sight in front of him really gave Olga a reason to stop, but he didn't focus on what was in front of him, and he let himself lose his temper because he didn't focus on what was in front of him.
Pattin, who was following Julius, came to Olga's side, and the three of them stood together, their eyes in front of them.
Ahead of it is no longer a dense jungle, but a road paved with stone bricks, and at the end of the road, a complex of buildings can be faintly seen. The road seems to have been abandoned for a long time, and weeds have grown between the cracks in the stone bricks, and some of the stone bricks have been arched. The road is not smooth, and it would not be pleasant for the passengers to let the carriage walk on such a road.
"I've never heard of a place like this in the Forest of the Dead. Patin said, his eyes falling on the buildings on the other side of the road, which looked as old as the road underneath. What the hell is this place, no one can give an answer, and the person who can give an answer does not seem to be with them now.
The three of them walked out of the forest and walked on the road. "Shall we go over?" asked Julius.
"Be vigilant. Olga said, her hand already resting on the sword at her waist. "If this is where Lulunaka is taking us, then it doesn't seem strange. β
Patin closed his eyes, and after a while they opened, "I can't hear any movement, not even the sound of bugs." β
When Patin said this, both Olga and Julius discovered that this was the case. When did the sound disappear? When did they discover the place, or was it earlier?
There was not much sound to be heard here, except for the faint sound of the wind swaying the foliage.
"It's too little sound. "It's not a sign of safety, what kind of place would keep the bugs from approaching?" said Pattin, "but if this is where Lulunaka asks us to go......
"Then we have no choice but to move forward. Olga said.
The three of them walked along the road towards the complex. The road was not long, and several of them were cautious about their surroundings, but there seemed to be no sign of danger coming.
When they came to the complex, they found it to be a circular square. The square can accommodate about 100 people, with a flat open space in the middle and broken buildings around it. The ground is made of stone bricks of different colors, round after round, from small to large, tightly together, into a wonderful pattern.
Now, Olga and they are standing on this wonderful pattern.
The three of them looked in different directions, Olga and Patin both patrolling the surrounding buildings, and Julius looking down at the marvelous patterns on the ground.
"The architecture here ...... Not something I know. Patin looked around and walked to one of the buildings, reaching for the walls, which were covered in moss and vines, and had no roofsβor rather, Patin wasn't sure if there really was such a thing as a roof. "Twin eagles and crescents, neither have this style of building. He had a strange feeling in his heart that the buildings here were so old that he couldn't recognize what era or kingdom they belonged to. But such an ancient thing has been preserved, so that these people have a chance to touch it.
Olga noticed that there were several roads in the square that stretched out, and she didn't know where to go.
"Olga, have you ever seen a building of this style?" asked Pattin.
Olga shook her head, "Never." If you don't know, then I'm afraid I don't have much to say. β
Patin looked inside the building. These buildings don't have doors, I don't know if they don't have them in the first place, or if the doors have been torn down, and the same goes for the windows. There is nothing in the building, no furniture, no furnishings, and it is impossible to tell what the building is for.
"At the very least, it's certain that this isn't part of the Twin Eagle Empire. Patin said, and he counted the days he had gone into the forest, and the path he had traveled every day. "This is undoubtedly the northern part of the Forest of the Dead, and it may have gone very deep...... But let alone the undead, we don't even see a single bug now. β
"So what kind of place is this?" Julius felt a little uncomfortable because it was so quiet. He didn't like the place, it had a lifeless feel.
"Want to know where this is?" Lulunaka's voice suddenly rang out, startling Julius. He followed the prestige and saw Lulunaka emerge from one of the buildings. After seeing Julius and the others, Lulunaka smiled: "You guys have finally arrived, and in order to wait for you, I slept for a while, and I ended up with dust all over my body." β
Julius took a closer look and saw that Lulunaka had indeed been covered in a lot of dust, and that the cloak, which had been quite clean, was now dirty. Looking at Lulunaka, Julius felt like she had gone back to when she first met Lulunaka.
"In a place like this, you can close your eyes in peace. Olga said. Lulunaka looked a little surprised at Olga's words, "Why not? It's quiet, there's no sound, and you want to doze off." β
"Why did you bring us here?" said Pattin, walking over to Lulunaka, "and here, it's time for you to give us a clear answer." β
Lulunaka nodded, "Indeed, if you continue to pretend to be mysterious like this, you will be really angry." And there's no need to hide it now. β
Lulunaka pulled an object out of her arms. It was a palm-sized square lantern with a dark blue flame burning inside. The lantern looked like a blue gem in Lulunaka's hand, but it was encased in glass. "Do you know why you haven't seen any undead along the way? I didn't want to be noticed, so I used some special tricks and chose a path that only I knew about, so that I could avoid things that I didn't have any wisdom anymore. As long as you don't make too much noise, then those guys with brains won't wake up so easily. You know? Not every skeleton is as good a talker as Mr. Tours, and most of the time, I've been met with undead spirits with a head full of resentment. β
Lulunaka tilted her head and held the small lantern in front of her, "So much, actually, I just want to say one thing." If this fire is extinguished, then this place will become ...... It's very lively. And then there was an unfortunate thing, I didn't have anything to add fuel to the fire. β
As soon as Lulunaka finished speaking, the fire in the lantern was extinguished.
