Chapter 12: The Naughty Age
Not far from their homes is a large field of hay, where the villagers lay a chevron of straw and a hill-like pile of straw. We used to go there with a few good playmates, playing hide-and-seek around the straw pile, or running on the tall grass and playing catch. Everyone walks hand in hand on the haystack, and the person who loses the guess stands in a fixed position in the middle of the haystack and stretches out his hand to grab someone, and the person who is touched will become the one who grabs people. Afraid of being caught, they will go to the edge of the haystack. Often, people will step on the air, scream and fall, and everyone giggles. Sometimes it causes several people to fall down together without holding on to it, and the laughter is even louder. I got up and went up to continue playing, so that I often got straw clippings into my clothes, and when I went home, I was often scolded by my parents and not allowed to go again, but the next day I would run there to play.
Because we play hide and seek, the straw pile is often trampled on by us. In the lower straw piles, free-range hens would jump up to lay eggs, and we would often see several eggs lying there. Sometimes the owner of the hen will come and pick up the eggs, and sometimes they will secretly take them home and cook them to eat.
Nests of rat cubs can often be found in the straw pile, because the little mice are white and tender, have not yet opened their eyes, and are very soft and cute, very similar to piglets. So at the time, I thought it was a little piglet, and I often played with a litter in my hand. The little brother said that it was a little mouse and could be used to make wine, for fear that we would not believe it, and showed us the bottles and cans of wine.
The naughty boys will also put the little mouse in the pocket of their clothes and take it to school, and quietly put it in the schoolbag of those timid female classmates, and the female classmates are so frightened that they scream, and then the male classmates are punished by the teacher to stand. Fortunately, I've seen it, and the male classmate put it in my school bag, and I'm not afraid, I even took it out and played it by myself.
There is a big pond in the village and there is also a big tree there. We used to climb trees and throw seeds at the fish in the pond. Sometimes you can see a bird's nest in a tree, so you will climb up to see if there are any eggs. If you find that it is a bird's egg, take it out and cook it at home. If you find that it is a bird, you will not take it, and you are afraid that the mother bird will come back and will not find her baby. However, there are still naughty little brothers who will take a nest of birds that don't open their eyes home to raise, and basically starve to death while raising them.
The little brother who went to school taught us how to throw sandbags, and after learning how to throw sandbags, they went to school, and we made our own sandbags to play with. Let the two of them stand at each end and throw sandbags, and the rest of the people will hide in the middle. With a knock-out system, the person in the middle has to act as a pitcher if he is hit by a punching bag. If you grab the thrown sandbag directly with your hand, you will have to add a chance to survive and the game will continue. We often play all day and get sweaty.
There is another way to play sandbags, where several people form a large circle, and A, who loses the guessing punch, is responsible for throwing the sandbag behind B. After losing it, within the time limit, if B doesn't find it, he loses. If it is found in time, B will chase and A will run. If B doesn't catch up with A, and A runs to B's position and squats down, B loses. If B catches up with A, A loses. The loser is not only responsible for throwing sandbags, but also for putting on a show. It's a very exciting game, especially the fun you feel in the process of chasing and being chased.
The young lady taught us how to jump the band, the jumping band does not need much space, the number of people can be more or less, especially popular with little girls. At that time, there was a song about jumping rubber bands, 'The small bridge is flowing and the water is in a hurry, and my sister and I are picking lotus flowers.' My sister picked seven flowers, and I only picked one, one flower, two flowers, three flowers, ......'. First, two people take one end to stretch the band, and the others take turns to jump. According to the prescribed action, the one who completes wins. If you make a mistake or don't hook the band, jump with another person. It's a novelty, playable, and song-ready way to play, and it's all the rage in girls' primary school careers.
The young lady went to school and had no rubber bands to play with. The two of us took two long bamboos together, one with the head and the other with the tail. Move closer to the middle, pull away from each other, and then the other person jumps in the middle. If you get caught in the leg, you lose. This is a new way to play that the little brother taught us, because boys are not suitable for jumping rubber bands, so we came up with a game similar to rubber bands that boys can play.
We also love to play with feather shuttlecock, and if we can't afford to buy shuttlecock, my little brother will make his own feather shuttlecock. Put a few copper coins on the plastic tube, and then sew the plastic tube with needle and thread, insert chicken feathers, and a simple chicken feather shuttlecock is completed. After the shuttlecock is done, three or five children play together, you kick me, I kick you, kick the shuttlecock in a loop, or two people kick together.
In front of my house, there is a shallow water meadow that resembles a ditch, and the domestic water of my house is discharged there every day. Water and duckweed above, silt below, and weeds all around. There are often yellow eels and small fish infested there, and every night the yellow eels will come out of the hole to rest on the water, and someone will hold a flashlight in one hand and catch the yellow eel in the other.
There are often free-range ducks laying eggs around the water meadows, and hens laying eggs under weeds. The chickens and ducks in the village are basically free-range, and I am not sure whose family it is. My sister and I would cover it with grass and pick up the eggs when no one was looking. I would also happily show off with my mother and pick up a few eggs on the grass, and then wait for my mother to fry eggs for us to eat the next day.
I also cultivated a small clearing in the meadow in front of my house and learned from my parents to grow vegetables. Plant a small piece of garlic or green onion, and stick the sprouted garlic or green onion at home into the soil, and it will grow into garlic or green onion seedlings in about ten days. A small piece of vegetables, while my parents don't know, secretly threw dozens of vegetable seeds and a few melon seeds at home on it. Watering and peeing, fortunately, I still know that urine should be diluted with water, otherwise it is estimated that the sprouted vegetable seedlings will die. When I tried to plant for the first time, there were not many dead vegetable seedlings, and they could still grow into a lush greenery, which could be picked and eaten in stir-fry. The melon seedlings are more troublesome, and a small fence shed is built so that its branches and leaves can be strung to bloom and grow melons. It takes about a month to grow into long melons, which is quite fulfilling.
There was a guava tree in the neighbor's house, and some of the guavas that grew too tall could not be picked, and the ripe ones fell to the ground and fell to pieces. Soon there will be clusters of guava seedlings growing under the tree, and I will dig up a sapling and plant it at home. When the saplings grow up, they move to the front of the house, and they will be able to bear fruit in about two or three years. After waiting for a few years, the moment I ate the fruit, I instantly felt very happy. After a few years of waiting, I don't feel like there's anything left.
The neighbors also planted banana trees, and when they reached the ripening stage, a long string of green bananas hung on the trees, which was very eye-catching. To make our group of children envious, my parents felt a little embarrassed to see us coveting, and also went to dig up a few wild banana trees and plant them in the ground. It's a pity that in the event of a flood, the banana tree was soaked in water, and it couldn't grow for two or three years.
