Chapter Eighty-Three: The Pavilion of the Scriptures

The night was thick and foggy.

On the aisles on both sides of the Shaolin Temple road, all kinds of branches have long been hung with big bright and crystalline water droplets, which are dazzling and eye-catching, and make people feel extremely lovely.

In the misty and rainy situation, Runzhi and his entourage walked slowly along the fine gravel road, chatting while walking, naturally there are some very classic myths about Buddhism, or many interesting stories mentioned in Buddhist scriptures.

"Tang Xuanzang, mentioned in the four famous novels "Journey to the West", although historical records record that after he introduced the Indian Mahayana Buddhist scriptures into China, he devoted himself to the translation and research of Chinese and foreign Buddhist scriptures, and the most representative of them is the "Heart Sutra".

  Abbot Huitong continued:

The relics mentioned in it, the color is not different from the emptiness, the emptiness is not different from the color, the color is empty, the emptiness is the color, by the desire to know, it is also the same, it is still passed on by word of mouth from generation to generation for the world, relish, happy to do it, Tang Xuanzang's whole body relics after his death are hidden in the Shaolin Temple

When Runzhi heard this, he asked thoughtfully: "When Tang Xuanzang came back from taking the scriptures, it is said that he has always studied the Mahayana Buddhist scriptures in the White Horse Temple, and finally died in the White Horse Temple, how can his relics be here?" ”

  Master Huitong smiled and said:

"The donor didn't know that on the day when Tang Xuanzang returned from the scriptures, the so-called White Horse Temple was actually Shaolin Temple, because the White Horse Temple was next door to Shaolin Temple at that time, and Shaolin Temple was not as famous as White Horse Temple at that time."

The abbot cleared his throat and continued:

"Until the period of the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms, because of the war, people's hearts were full of fear of war, so at this time people pinned their hopes on the Shaolin Temple, so that the prestige of the Shaolin Temple began to surpass the White Horse Temple, and the two were separated after that, and the ruins of the White Horse Temple have become part of the Shaolin Temple."

Runzhi listened, seemed to be thoughtful, this aspect is really not familiar to Runzhi, but it also feels very novel when he listens, so he continued:

"I see, this official came to your temple this time, it is really to consult all the original texts of the Mahayana Buddhist scriptures, I heard that the Mahayana Buddhist scriptures are profound, and many words have comprehended many births, old age, sickness and death in the world, which is the most rare, so I came to check it in person today."

The abbot Master Huitong seemed to be deliberately trying to sell his belief, and when he heard that Runzhi was doing this, he smiled and said:

"Adults come to this temple, so that the temple overnight, there is a day to shine, it is a great honor for the temple, the tired adults for this area of Buddhist scriptures do not hesitate to come here, this is the sin of the old man, if you need to consult the Mahayana Buddhist scriptures in the future, you can directly send someone to get it, the old man will be fully supplied, and there should be all the best.

This Master Huitong said in and out of words, implying that Runzhi did not need to go all the way to this Shaolin Temple to check it out for himself for some Buddhist scriptures, and he only needed to send someone to get it, which seemed to be for Runzhi's sake, but in fact, he also had his own calculations.

In order to welcome the arrival of Runzhi and his entourage, the letter did not mention that pilgrims should be forbidden to visit, but such a great official came to the temple, such as the abbot himself is a great honor for the Shaolin Temple.

If the temple is closed in this way, although pilgrims are prohibited from entering in the short term, the incense money will be reduced a lot.

But because the governor has been here, coupled with the measures to close the temple, it will confirm the authenticity of the rumor that "the governor of Henan visited the Shaolin Temple in person" in word-of-mouth, so that it will actually improve the reputation of the Shaolin Temple among the people, and people will: "You see, even our biggest parents in Henan have come to the Shaolin Temple, which shows how effective the Shaolin Temple is, and we don't forget to burn incense on the fifteenth day of the new year."

Those who can't give birth to a son temporarily because of infertility will persuade each other: "I heard that our governors of Dahean have come to Shaolin Temple to burn incense and worship Buddha, and we ordinary people don't want to burn incense soon, maybe we may hold a big fat man next year."

From the perspective of long-term interests, the advantages of naturally closing the temple outweigh the disadvantages, not to mention that in the short term, this also further curries favor with Runzhi, imagine who will easily blame the person who intends to flatter and please himself?

"It's so good, if the official needs it in the future, he will definitely send someone to pick it up," Runzhi said with a smile, as if the Shaolin Temple's scripture pavilion was regarded as a public library.

"My lord, there is the Tibetan Scripture Pavilion in front," Venerable Huitong pointed to a very ordinary-looking temple in front of him.

Runzhi muttered to himself in his heart, even Shaolin Temple, who has so much energy to build that spiritual Arhat and cultivate thousands of Buddhas, but only placed the Tibetan Scripture Pavilion in such an extremely ordinary monk's room, which is really a stain on the Buddhist classics.

It's just that Runzhi thought in his heart, but it was inconvenient for him to come out directly, so he just said euphemistically: "If this Scripture Pavilion needs to be expanded, this official will definitely help you."

This old monk is also an old treacherous and cunning, and when he heard that the governor wanted to fund the expansion of the Tibetan Scripture Pavilion, he was suddenly overjoyed, so he said:

"Your Excellency, the poor monk right and on behalf of all the monks of Shaolin Temple to express the most sincere gratitude to the adults, because the temple incense money is decreasing, so the scriptures in the Tibetan Scripture Pavilion have to be transferred from the main hall to this monk's room, if the adults lend a helping hand, want to come to our temple plans to rebuild this year the Tibetan Treasure Hall is sure"

In fact, there is no "treasure hall of hidden scriptures", all of which are nonsense by the old monk, hoping to get more official funds with the help of the governor's sudden pity, so as to raise donations for the lion and the people, and then secretly take most of the money for himself in the project.

Runzhi didn't intend to take it seriously, but when he saw that this old monk actually took it seriously, he pushed the boat down the river and said: "Your temple wants to build a treasure hall of scriptures, and the official will help you, and if you want to build it, you must build it well, in the official's opinion, this treasure hall of the scriptures should become the largest, most prosperous and most important place in your temple."

Runzhi expressed his views on the construction of the abbot's non-existent Jizo Sutra Treasure Hall with three most, but in Master Huitong's view, the most concerned is when to issue funds and how to help such the most practical issues.

It is true that Shaolin Temple is also a secular place, and it seems that everyone eats fasting and recites Buddha, but it is still difficult to go to school without money after all

These monks are more worldly than worldly people about money, so in such a Buddhist temple area, wise people will not easily ask for half a peanut, half a Buddha bead or something in kind, because in the eyes of these monks, these are more expensive than life, not a million profits to come back, he is absolutely unwilling to pay half a little.
