Chapter 18

Elena took the Carlos sisters to an apothecary shop on another street in the city.

This shop is also one of the Medici properties.

Like the perfume shop, it is run by Elena. Although the positioning is different, they are all produced in the same alchemy workshop, that is, the one that Elena took them to visit two days ago.

The pharmacy is also located on the Arno River, in the commercial area near the Palazzo della Signoria, just two blocks away from the perfume shop.

All are located in the heart of the city.

However, most of the shops on this street are mainly magic items. From wands and weapons for battle, to tools to support training, everything from magic wands and weapons for combat to support training.

The Medici's shop was the only one in the neighborhood that sold high-grade magic potions. These include things like hallucinogens that are not readily available.

After a detailed examination of the accounts, Elena ruled out all possibilities.

"How could there be?" Elena said distressedly.

Lately, hallucinogens have not been sold very much. However, illusion is such a thing, at most, against ordinary people, and it is difficult to be effective when encountering more professional magicians.

If you want to play well, then auxiliary potions are essential.

"Could it be a potion from somewhere else?" Bella asked.

"Impossible." Elena shook her head, "I'm sure the smell must be a Medici recipe."

"Think about it, is there anyone who can mobilize the supplies at home without being discovered?"

"Without being discovered?" Elena thought for a moment, "Besides my brother and me, there are only my father and Steward Ugo. The elder brother should be unlikely, as for the father......

"Mr. Cosimo seems to have said he didn't do it."

"Should I trust him?"

"Uh...... That's your father."

"But, Steward Ugo has been with us for so long, and has been here since my grandfather's time. He has always been loyal and has been very kind to our brothers and sisters since childhood. I do not believe that my father would betray the Medici unless he was instructed to do so."

"At the end of the day, don't you trust Mr. Cosimo?"

"I...... I don't know......" Elena felt torn between what to do.

"In that case," said Bella, "let's go and ask him directly, shall we?"

"Huh? Ask my father?" Elena asked.

"No, it's Mr. Ugo." Bella replied, "Since you trust him so much, you might as well get straight to the point and speak your thoughts and concerns directly and see how he answers." If he is as you say, he is a faithful man, and he will not complain against you."

"Okay then." Elena nodded as well, "There's nothing else to do."

Back at the Medici mansion, Bella and Anna went back to their room first.

Elena arrives at the bookkeeper, where Steward Ugo is taking care of the accounts.

"Mr. Ugo, may I delay you a little?" Elena asked politely.

"What can I do to help Miss?" Ugo stopped what he was doing and pushed the gold-rimmed glasses on the bridge of his nose.

"Hmm......" Elena hesitated for a moment, then decided to follow Bella's words and get straight to the point, "Do you know about the fire dragon incident in Finch Town?"

Ugo was silent for a moment, then gave an answer that Elena didn't expect.

"I did it." Ugo took off his gold-rimmed glasses, "I didn't expect you to find out so soon."

Although she only had a suspicion in advance, Elena didn't expect it, and the other party directly admitted it.

"For...... Why?" This sudden scene left Elena a a little at a loss.

I didn't expect it to be him. And he wasn't ambiguous at all.

The straightforward answer was really an unexpected development for Elena.

"Actually, I'm glad you were able to ask me in person, instead of taking any other measures." Ugo rubbed his brow with his fingers, as if his eyes were tired from a morning's work.

"But you...... I can't believe it's you." Elena's voice trembled, "Does my father know that?"

"I didn't know beforehand." Ugo replied, "But now I know."

"Why? Could it be that Miss Sophia's death is also ......" Elena did not dare to continue.

"Miss." Ugo interrupted him, "Sophia did commit suicide."

The butler's eyes were full of determination.

"He was already poisoned when I passed that day." Ugo closed his eyes and crossed his hands as if in repentance, "I faked the coal furnace accident for the sake of the Medici reputation, and it is easy to believe that it was just an accident. Sophia's death will not be investigated."

"But ......"

"Are you trying to ask, why did Sophia kill herself?"

Elena nodded silently.

"You may have to ask the master about this matter, I can't be the master." Ugolio looked apologetically at Elena.

Without saying a word, Elena turned and left the bookkeeper.

"Anyway, things are finally getting some progress now." When Elena returned to her room, Bella comforted her.

"Still, I can't believe it." Elena said, "Why can't Sophia think about it?"

"Didn't Mr. Ugo tell you to go to Mr. Cosimo?"

"But......" Elena's expression was visibly reluctant.

If she confronts her father in person, she is always worried that she will not be able to control her emotions.

Although Bella felt that this concern was not unreasonable, she could not overstep her bounds.

After all, this is a private matter for the Medici family.

Just when the two were at a loss, Cosimo suddenly came to his daughter's room.

"Then I'll ...... first," Bella was about to get up and leave, but was held back by Mr. Cosimo.

"Miss Carlos doesn't shy away." Cosimo said, pulling out a letter and handing it to Elena, "Ugo told me. Don't blame him, he's also thinking about the family."

"It's ......," Elena cautiously took the letter.

"I thought it would be better not to let you know about this matter. But at this point, there is no point in continuing to hide it. I did underestimate the abilities of young people, and it was only a matter of time before you found out the truth. As for this letter......

Cosimo hesitated for a moment, then continued, "Do you want to leave it to Lorenzo or not, you can do it yourself?"

With that, he turned around and left the room without looking back.

Elena looked at her father's back in a daze, and was at a loss for a moment.

The letter in his hand was not sealed, as if it had been opened.

"Do you want to see it?" Bella asked.

"Hmm." Elena nodded.

When the envelope was opened, inside was a piece of letter paper of high quality.

Just by the feel, you can see that this is not a bargain that can be bought in an ordinary store on the street.

It's a lot like the kind of paper my grandfather used when he was alive.

After opening the letter, the handwriting that greeted her eyes confirmed Elena's thoughts even more.

This kind of uninhibited italic letters is exactly the penmanship that my grandfather used to use back then.
