Chapter 7: The Story of Crossing the Mountain

When I was in elementary school, my father, who was the principal, would organize the fourth and fifth grade students to climb Yuewang Mountain once a year, and I remember that he and the school teachers would participate, and sometimes the school's graduation photos were also taken at the top of the mountain.

When I was in the third grade, my father took me to climb the mountain, and my sister was one year older than me, and she was in the fourth grade, so she climbed up by herself.

The summit of Yuewang Mountain is convex all around and concave in the middle, forming a basin. There is a large courtyard in the middle, with an area of about one acre of land, called "Lotus Courtyard", the wall base is made of stones, and the wall is rammed with loess.

Locals say that "there are no big trees on the top of the mountain", and there is either thatch or shrubs on the top of the mountain. According to my grandmother, the villagers who live in Yueshan will burn the mountain on the top of Yueshan every year, and sometimes thunder will catch fire, so it will not become a big tree.

On the top of the hill grows a low shrub that bears fruit similar to that of chestnut, but much smaller than chestnut, less than a quarter of the size of chestnut. The chestnut that is completely similar in shape is called "hairy chestnut", and the one with a sharp end is called "sharp chestnut".

Their shells are full of spikes, and people in the mountains specially use bamboo to make clips, which are used to pick "hairy chestnuts" and "sharp chestnuts". Every late autumn ripening season, they will go up the mountain to collect, called "beating hairy chestnuts".

"Mao Li" and "Jianli" are wild, the mountain environment is very suitable for growth, the skin is hard, the flesh is thick, not easy to spoil and resistant to storage. It can be used as a daily snack, as a refreshment, and as a food supplement.

Especially on the top of the mountain, it grows a lot, and after a fire, the burr is burned off, and even the fruit is directly cracked to facilitate collection. Therefore, the habit of burning mountains was formed, and I don't know how many years it lasted.

The first time I climbed the mountain, I could still see the ruins and broken walls, the wall foundation made of random stones was still there, and there were still remnants of the loess wall. The front door is made of granite strips, and a stone strip is placed on the courtyard, and the three words "Lotus Courtyard" are still clearly legible.

On the east side of the front door stands an incense burner, nearly three meters high, made of local granite, the bottom is a square stone seat, there are two circular stone drums in the middle, the lower one is larger and hollow with traces of incense, the smaller solid one above is used as decoration, and the top is an umbrella-shaped octagonal eaves, and the rain eaves are chiseled into yin and yang lines in the direction of flowing water, like a rain trough.

It has survived countless storms and rains, and it is still strong and strong, and it is the most intact relic. The first time I climbed the mountain, my father carried me up the incense burner and took a group photo while sitting on the rain eaves at the top. This photograph, like all photographs, was carefully preserved by my father and is still intact and clear.

There is a spring next to the incense burner, this spring water is more exquisite, from the four edges to the bottom of the water, all with a long stone paving, the spring water gushes out of the clear and sweet, to the lake in front of the "Lotus Temple", it is said that the spring water of drinking this clear spring will not invade all diseases.

Every time I revisit the old place, I will definitely find this spring water, drink a few deep sips, and now this clear spring is still there, still clear, still sweet.

There is a lake on the top of the mountain, in front of the Lotus Courtyard, the area is about two or three acres of land, there are patches of small water bamboos growing on the edge of the lake, the clusters are low and low, the water surface is not very clear, it may be due to the fact that no one has cleaned up for a long time, and the silt is accumulated.

The place where the lake flows down the mountain is the southern mountain pass, which is only a little more than a foot wide, and the spring water gathers into a lake, and it flows down from this mountain pass, and two wide stone strips make a bridge on it, crossing the stream, just one person passes.

The mountain pass is the only way to go up the mountain in the south, a stone path was built in some year, until it leads to the bottom of the mountain, and finally I don't know where it forks, starting from the elementary school, leaving the road and entering the country road, I stepped on the stone path, and there are several intersections, which are connected by the stone path.

The water surface of the lake is uncovered, in the slightly yellowish water, there is a tree branch exposed, the surface is pitch black like a fire, it looks very thick, particularly conspicuous, and there is a story of Zhang Tianshi in it.

It is said that Zhang Tianshi cultivated on the top of Yue Mountain to become an immortal, and there are many myths and legends about him in the nearby ten miles and eight towns.

When the Lotus Courtyard was built, the wood that met the requirements was only available in Jing'an County next door, and the mountain road was rugged, the road was far away, and it was inconvenient to transport. With the help of Zhang Tianshi, wood pieces of wood emerged from this lake out of thin air.

As soon as the last piece of wood used for the girder came out of the lake, the carpenter who was in charge of the construction of the house cried out, "Enough is enough," and the log immediately stopped moving, and no matter how hard he tried and how he tried to do it, he could not take it out.

As a result, the girder was missing, and Zhang Tianshi used the planed sawdust to pile it together, blew it gently, and the sawdust on the surface was removed, and a good and thick girder was conjured, and the courtyard was successfully built.

Since then, there is this girder in the lake, the legend is of course false, but the locals say that this branch really can't be pulled, and it is really a tree branch inserted into the water upside down recently, look at the top of the mountain all around, are low shrubs, overgrown with weeds, I really don't understand how to grow such a big tree, and why there is a section of the lake upside down.

Taking advantage of the spring to the east, it is an open land, called the training ground, and it is said that the king of Yue, Goujian, has trained here, so it is called the training ground. The legend is difficult to distinguish between true and false, but it is indeed very wide, a little sloped, but it is also smooth, and there is no problem at all for thousands of people to practice.

In the past of the training ground, not far away, you can see a big stone protruding from the ground, the shape is like an upside-down lid on the ground, and on the stone on one side, there are four big characters engraved "cross the tiger and ascend to the immortal", I don't know what year, month, and who inscribed it.

Legend has it that Zhang Tianshi rode a tiger under his crotch on this stone, and flew into the sky to become a god. Maybe Gou Jian once stood on this boulder back then, commanding thousands of troops and horses to drill.

To the east of the training ground, there is a narrow valley, which winds and turns to the east, and there is a trail in the valley that follows the winding, which is the road down the mountain to the east, and this road is completely dirt. The valley floor is wide, the soil is fertile, and the trails can be walked and you can see grassy wetlands, but now they have grown into lush shrubs, and only the trails remain under the felling of the mountain people.

At the lower mountain pass in the east, there is a huge rock on which dozens of people can stand at the same time, and teachers and students usually take a group photo here.

The boulder is straight and prominent, the stone becomes a cliff, look down, the bottom of the valley seems to be at the foot, such as the abyss, the gust of wind and mountain wind, rushing towards the face, the chill is dizzy. Perhaps because of this chill, the boulder is called the coffin stone, but the shape is somewhat similar when it is upright.

On the top of the highest peak within a radius of dozens of miles, there is a cave sky, there is a lake and a courtyard, and the scale is not small, who did it, there is no way to verify, its state of mind is directly chasing the sages, comparable to Tao Yuanming of "picking chrysanthemums under the east fence, leisurely seeing the South Mountain".
