Chapter Twenty-Six: Play (Part II)
Today is the third day of play, and the last day will be much easier than the first two days. Calm down and admire as if you are part of San Francisco. They are Washington Square Park, City Lights Bookstore, Lombard Street, and North Beach.
Lombard Street is one of San Francisco's most winding streets and is known for the abundance of precious flowers that line its streets. This section of the street on the Russian Hill was originally a straight pathway, but because it was too steep and dangerous, it was eventually converted into a nine-S-shaped pathway and paved with new bricks, making it a star on San Francisco's roads.
It passes through Russian Hill, Telegraph Hill and ends in the Embarcadero area, which runs a stretch between Hyde and Leavenworth, known as Lombard Street.
In 1999, the municipality set up a Curved Street Task Force to try to solve the traffic problem in the bend around Lombard Street. In 2001, the Task Force concluded that it was illegal to permanently close a block for traffic. Instead, the Task Force decided to establish a summer parking ban in the area, a ban on eastward traffic on major holidays, and an increase in fines for vehicles parked in the area. Despite the debate among residents about the benefits of this solution, the task force came up with the idea of using minibuses to transport tourists to famous neighborhoods, as one of the attractions of visiting the area is driving along the curvy part of the street.
Although pedestrians and vehicles are more strenuous to drive, you will never feel lonely driving on the flower street. In order to prevent traffic accidents on the uphill and downhill slopes, San Franciscans have deliberately built many flower beds on both sides of the curvy driveway, allowing vehicles to circle around the flower beds; Residents also planted trees and flowers in front of their homes to add color to the street.
The flowers along the way are carefully cultivated, high and low, color matching, and four seasons to ensure that there is a scene every day and every step is different. Compared with the surprise that tourists sometimes show, the residents on the side of the road look commonplace, as if they deliberately put on a straight face to show a kind of silent pride!
To be more serious, Flower Street is not the steepest street in the world, just in San Francisco, Fairbert Street and 22nd Street each have a 31-degree slope. Of course, folklore has it that Flower Street is 40 degrees. This shows even more that the steepness has caused a great shock to people's vision and psychology.
The four of us didn't stop at Lombard Street and went straight to Washington Square Park.
Located in Manhattan, New York, USA, Washington Square Park is one of the most prestigious parks in New York City, a major landmark in Manhattan's Greenwich Village, as well as a popular meeting and cultural venue.
The fountain in the park has become one of New York City's most famous attractions, visited by locals and visitors alike. Most of the buildings around the park are the property of NYU, some of which were built by NYU itself, and some of which were later converted into buildings for teaching and residential use. New York University rents Washington Square Park as the venue for its graduation ceremony, with the arch as the main symbol, and the university hopes that the park will become the center of gravity of the campus. As early as 1922, the campus of New York University predicted that they would take over the entire park for its own use, but this has not yet come true. Local residents consider the park to be one of the most important places in their surrounding community, so they have launched several large-scale campaigns to preserve it.
The park is located at the end of Fifth Avenue, and the north boundary is east of Waverly Place and west of the park. The east side is north of University Place; The south side is east of West 4th Street and west of the park; On the south side is north of MacDougal Street and south of the park.
Washington Square is the playground of North Beach, and the nearby Coit Tower is one of San Francisco's most famous landmarks and a famous tourist attraction in San Francisco, with the famous St. Peter's Church in the background, where even Marilyn Monroe's second wedding took place.
For lunch, I also chose the special snacks of Lombard Street, and I enjoyed the food while chatting during the meal, which was so comfortable.
"Brother Yunfan, today is the last day of playing. Do you have any plans for tomorrow?"
"Yes, I found a master. I want him to teach me something about the workplace, what's the matter? Are you interested?" Asked curiously.
"I'm not interested, I'm just asking you. If you're busy, there's no one to play with me, and the three of us haven't been here at all. He shook his head and said.
"That's it! Then I'll find a few people to take you to, they're really San Franciscans. He thought for a moment and said.
"But I don't speak English, so it's definitely not easy to communicate." He frowned and said.
"You don't have to worry about this, one of these people is Chinese, he knows many languages, you can just say it directly, she will translate." explained.
When I heard someone translate, my heart was finally steady. Then he said, "Great, so I don't have to worry about it." ”
"Then I'll be busy with my own affairs tomorrow, you can play here first, I'll come back in the evening to continue to accompany you, if you miss me, call me." Said with a smile.
"yes, okay." Nodding his head.
The next stop is City Lights Bookstore, the birthplace of the Beat Generation of City Lights Bookstore in San Francisco, USA, located in North Beach, San Francisco, USA, opened by Lawrence Fellinghetti in 1953. The City Lights Bookstore was once the home of Alan Ginsburg and Jack Kerouac, the home of the Beat Generation, and a signpost to the culture of rebellion.
Before coming here, Yunfan recommended that I watch "On the Road", and those names seem to be alive again: Alan Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac, William Bunos...... When you arrive in San Francisco, you have to go to City Lights, where there are often poetry readings or small plays, and on the second floor are works by Beat writers, and you can buy a book of poems by Alan Ginsberg.
When you enter the bookstore, you will see rows of bookshelves in the bookstore, with all kinds of books. The slogan "have a seat + read a book" can be seen everywhere on the wall, reminding travelers to stop by and enjoy reading.
Yun Fan also quietly told me, "People wander in the concrete forest of this city, looking for love and dreams, but life is full of impetuousness, restlessness and tension, and these emotions are like nightmares that follow everyone in the city." The bookstore is a dream of the city, a way of life, which carries an outlet to another world.
The surrounding landscape is exotic, and the bookstore is crowded with a variety of customers, who are not so much buying books as nostalgic as reminiscing about the many stories surrounding "City Lights".
City Lights reflects the more than 50-year history of the Beat Generation. This first-ever paperback bookstore in American history stockpiles works of classic modern literature and radical politics. It became the vane, heartland, and spiritual guide of San Francisco literature. ”
"People who love to read should choose City Lights as the first stop on their itinerary when they travel to San Francisco. For many years, the bookstore was open until 2 a.m. Today, it's open until midnight, seven days a week, and that alone easily beats out a lot of other bookstores because they close much earlier.
If City Lights is well-known in San Francisco, then Ferlinghetti himself is equally well-known in San Francisco. He was tall, with blue eyes, a gray beard, a little bald, a somewhat shy and mischievous expression. But as a poet, he was rarely highly appreciated by critics. But his flexible, candid, and often powerful works appeal to a large readership. Ferlinghetti has been active in San Francisco's literary scene for many years and has become a natural presence in the city. Whenever something important was in danger of disappearing, he would openly call for its salvation.
Often, Ferlinghetti's goal is to keep the city weird – a goal that can be a bit annoying. However, he has also spoken out publicly on many occasions when crises have occurred. ”
After a few hours at the bookstore, I went to North Beach. North Beach is a neighborhood northeast of San Francisco, adjacent to Chinatown and Fisherman's Wharf. It is considered the "Little Italy" of San Francisco, as immigrants of Italian descent used to make up the majority of the borough's population. North Beach is also San Francisco's main red-light district and nightlife district. The main streets of North Beach are Union Street, Columbus Avenue, Washington Square, Tuban Street, and Vallejo Street. With Russian Hill to the west, Telegraph Hill to the east, and north of Bay Street is Fisherman's Wharf, which the American Planning Association calls North Beach one of the top 10 neighborhoods in the United States.
We found a coffee shop and sat down, and a few of us ordered a cup of coffee and watched the people outside the window doing what they wanted to do.
"Tingting, do you want to settle down in San Francisco?" Suddenly asked.
I was so shocked by his question that I didn't respond for a long time, I thought about it carefully and said, "Brother Yunfan, why did you suddenly ask me this question?"
"I just thought of it suddenly, so I opened my mouth to ask you, if the question is too sudden, you can assume that I didn't say this." Said when he saw my expression.
"I see! I haven't thought about settling in San Francisco yet, because I need to talk to my family. It's a big deal, and I don't have to think about it if it's a small thing. He nodded and said.
"I'm sorry I forgot about your family. I'm really sorry. Said apologetically.
"It's okay, I don't blame you. You just want to stay with me forever, I can understand you, really!" Holding his hand, he said.
"Well, let's not talk about it. You just didn't say it!" Said with a wave of his hand.
"That's right, Brother Yunfan. Can I tell you one thing?" Asked tentatively.
"You say, what else can't I say?" Said with a smile.
"I wanted to have a job here in San Francisco, I wanted to earn my own money to support myself, and I didn't want to put all my energy on one person." Said gently.
"No, I'll just come to work." One bite vetoed my idea.
"Then I can't spend your money all the time, I don't want to go, I really want to have a job, you can help me! Okay, okay?" Begged.
"Do you really want to find a job of your own?" Said with a frown.
"Yes, it's true." Nodding his head.
"Okay, then I'll help you see what suits you, and if you find it, I'll have what you say." Nodding his head.
"Great, thank you Brother Yunfan." Said excitedly.
"Strange, why do you have to find a job on your own! From what I know about you, you don't work willingly, and you used to quarrel with your uncle a lot because of work. He asked curiously.
"That was me before, and now I want to earn money with my own hands. I want to honor my family, can't I?"
"Yes, you're right. It looks like I'm going to get to know you all over again, and you're really different from what you used to be. He put his arm around me as he spoke.
"Of course, people will become. It's good or bad, and I want to make myself better and better. Said confidently.
"You've become better, then I can't pull your hind legs, I want to be the best person like you, so that I can move forward side by side with you." Said with a smile.
"Then let's cheer together, move forward together, and move in a good direction." Sit and cheer up the gesture.
At the café, we talked a lot about our childhood, and now everyone laughs from the bottom of their hearts. Yun Fan never knew what I thought, and always felt that I came back to him because Xia Qiuchen broke my heart. If one day he really knew that I came to him to make him die for me, what would he do and think, I had thought about these issues before I came, and even if the result was bad, I would willingly accept such a cruel result.
