Chapter 70 EAST Project Meetings
"Academician Wang, the meeting is about to begin."
When Lu Yi's open recruitment of researchers was in full swing, a meeting was also being held in Beijing, and several professors and academicians who studied controlled nuclear fusion entered the conference room under the notice of the secretary and sat down on the seats with their names on them.
"The theme of this meeting is about the next research priorities of the EAST project, and we need to discuss our opinions together."
As soon as the words of the host of the meeting came out, Academician Wang, who was sitting in the first place, changed his face slightly, looked at the two people next to the host, and said: "I think we will still specialize in Tokmak devices in the future, and we have the world's leading technical advantages in this regard, and we have more experience. ”
"Academician Wang, we have a leading technical advantage in the Tokmak device, but I think that now that the mathematical model of plasma turbulence has been constructed, we can consider the simultaneous study of the stellarator, and the stellar simulator that solves the problem of plasma turbulence will have more development advantages than the Tokmak in technology and theory."
A professor from the University of South China put forward a different opinion, he is a researcher of stellarics, but he understands the situation of the domestic EAST project, he did not say that the focus is biased towards stellarstellarstellars, but only that synchronization will change the original monopoly of the Tokmak device.
"Professor Zhang, it is precisely because the mathematical model of plasma turbulence has been constructed to speed up the research progress of controlled nuclear fusion, so we should not give up our advantage in tokmak and turn to an almost scratch stellarator."
Another professor disagreed with Professor Zhang of the University of South China and retorted: "The troubles caused by plasma turbulence are not only in the stellarator, but also in the tokmak, and I believe that we will be the first to realize the commercialization of tokmak by adjusting the control algorithm according to this mathematical model."
But if we turn to stellarators, not to mention that stellarator research will require more than a dozen times more resources than Tokmak, will we be the first to commercialize them than countries that already have a significant advantage in stellarators? ”
This professor obviously understands the psychology of the people above, on the one hand, there is a tokmak that has already taken the advantage and may be the first to achieve the first commercialization, and on the other hand, other countries have the advantage, even if they are involved now, they may not be the first to achieve commercialization.
First, it is a very nice term, and it also means great political achievements and merits.
"Tokmak commercialization?"
Professor Zhang couldn't help but feel a little sad when he saw the changing expressions of the two people sitting next to the host, but he still said decisively: "Since Tokmak may be the first to be commercialized, may I ask, the Spiral Stone 7-X device at Max Planck Labs has successfully achieved a continuous discharge time of 3600 seconds, has our Tokmak device exceeded 1800 seconds?"
I remember that before the plasma turbulence mathematical model was constructed, the longest discharge time recorded by the Spiral Stone 7-X was no more than 10 seconds, and now it has exceeded an hour, while our tokmak unit was 102 seconds, and it is still in the early 1200 seconds, right? ”
"Professor Zhang."
Academician Wang next to him changed his face when he heard these data, and said: "As a scientific research scholar, we should not be affected by the data in front of us, Tokmak we have more advantages, so we should focus on this aspect, otherwise even if we turn to stellarics, where do the relevant researchers come from?" Or do you want to start from scratch?
Max Planck Labs has been researching the stellar mimic for more than ten years before we have today's Spiral Stone 7-X, so should we continue to use more than ten years to re-study the stellarator?
And don't forget that the resources required for the research of the stellar mimic are more than ten times that of Tokmak, and the current industrial level of our country cannot even meet the engineering standards of the Spiral Stone 7-X. ”
"Engineering problems are essentially material problems, and at present, our research on superconducting materials is no worse than that of foreign countries, and I don't think we have the qualifications to study stellarators.
The current data, theoretical analysis, and future development of technology from Max Planck Labs have proved that the stellar simulator has more development potential than Tokmak, which is an opportunity for us to overtake in the corner.
From the current problems encountered by the two devices, it can be said that there is only one problem left in the stellarizer, that is, the problem of materials engineering, and solving this problem is equivalent to the stellarite getting the ticket to commercialization.
And what about Tokmak? In addition to the problems of material engineering, how do you solve a series of problems in magnetic fields and plasmas, such as twisted films, magnetic surface tears, and magnetic islands, caused by the coupling of external magnetic fields and plasma currents? ”
Professor Zhang still insisted on his force field, and he understood that today's meeting was not so much about discussing the next development of the EAST controlled nuclear fusion project, but more about a game of interests.
Once he retreats, it means that domestic research on stellars will still be free-range, which will not only affect the major interests of China in the field of controlled nuclear fusion, but also make them researchers who study stellars continue to tighten their belts and never come out.
Originally, because of the problem of plasma turbulence, there are more advantages and disadvantages between tokmak and stellarator, and the choice of tokmak as the previous main research direction in China is related to the research funds in these years, and it is also related to the level of domestic industrial development.
Tokmak is not as affected by plasma turbulence as stellarators, but it has various problems such as magnetic plane tearing and magnetic islands, but the cost of this thing is relatively low, and the industrial level required is not so harsh.
The stellarator does not have the problems of magnetic surface tearing and magnetic islands, and the problems encountered are not so many, but the cost is expensive, and before the emergence of better superconducting materials, the engineering accuracy required is not even achievable by the previous industrial level of Huaguo.
As a researcher of controlled nuclear fusion, everyone understands that with the emergence of the mathematical model of plasma turbulence, by adjusting the control algorithm of the controllable nuclear fusion device to minimize the problems caused by the plasma turbulence phenomenon, then the stellarator and the tokmak have their own advantages and disadvantages, and the stellarator will have an absolute advantage.
Next, only the problem of materials engineering needs to be solved, and the stellarator can almost be initially commercialized.
Even if Tokmak solves the same material engineering problems as the stellarator, the magnetic field tearing caused by magnetic field coupling will still become the threshold before commercialization.
He knew that he was at a natural disadvantage in this conference, because more than 90% of the professors and academicians who study controlled nuclear fusion in China are studying tokmak, but this should not be the reason for putting all the treasure on tokmak and giving up stellarroders.
